We have Friends list, sure. But is it weird that I want to be notified whenever certain Users post threads (or maybe even posts in general, though that might get a little much)?
I was actually hoping that following meant notifications when those you follow post threads and posts. Misleading indeed. I was hoping for more for sure.

That's what I was gonna say. Aside from the name (subscribe -> watch) & where it shows up (subscriptions list -> (unread) watched threads list), what exactly is different?
Hm, thanks for pointing that out... That's almost exactly what I'm looking for.
The only problem is, it shows you that for everyone you've Friended. I've Friended a fair amount of people that I don't care to have constant notifications of... And I don't want to just UnFriend them over something dumb like this.
I guess I'm looking for a one-way news feed. (Un)Friending is so public; I just want to click "subscribe to user" and have that show up in a news feed.
//EDIT// - Perhaps easier than all that (creating an entirely separate sub-system to Friending & News Feeding) would be to just include a boolean "NewsFeed this Friend?" option for each user on your Friends list. And then only populate the News Feed with subscribed Friends.
You're not breaking friendships like in real life by doing that, lol. It's just unfollowing people. They won't care, and if they do, they probably deserved to be unfollowed.
Basically, just do what you need to do and you can use the link jondrean provided.

Agreed. We should have separate sections for true friends (aka contact list/whitelist/etc.) and subscribing (news feed), right now we can't unsubscribe people without breaking friendship and mess with our contact list
EDIT: for users who follow each other, if you plan to restore the Friends system, make them friends too? As in Old Hive, where those who subscribed each others are friends
