I think I know your problem.
It has something to do with the Graphics Drivers.
This is how you can fix it:

1. Find the short cut of 3DS Max and right click on it

2. In the context menu click on "Attributes" or something like that, I just know the german word "Eigenschaften", but it should be the last entry (at bottom)

3. In the new window in the field "Target" there should be a path. Now just add a "-h" without the " " behind the path (see picture)

4. Press okay and double click on the shortcut to launch 3ds max.

5. Finally a window appears with the title "Graphics Driver Setup"

6. I don't know which is the right for you, but for me ticking "Software" fixed the problem

7. Press okay and enjoy modelling!

I hope this could help you.
