How do the damage effects like "Shadow damage +X.x%" work?

Is it a direct damage (shadow) bonus to the hero's attack or does it increase shadow damage done by shadow attacks/spells?

It's confusing due to the effects saying "from items" whereas the above mentioned effects don't say that.

It just adds a percentage of damage to every attack/spell/ability of that element. It is not a proc effect, just a simple damage modifier.

Say an enemy has a crit damage factor of 150%.

If you have a crit damage reduction factor of 10%, the enemy should crit you for 140% damage then.
