142 is really good. On average, I usually end up around 125.
Typeracer is actually quite fun if you're fast enough. I think the average is more indicative, but the highest scores usually vary or are far above your actual skill. I've gotten above 150 on typeracer because of some easy runs, but I am in no way a 150 WPM typer.
You guys sure type really fast. Must be because I'm not typing properly (the hand and finger positioning and stuff lol). The fastest I got was 32 and I was dead serious when typing...
It is pretty much impossible to exceed 200 average random words per minute due to the limitations of human input precision (bits per input and degrees of input). The fastest rates can only be obtained with specially designed keyboards which optimize input performance.
Obviously this metric varies between people. Someone might be able to exceed 200 words per minute but that will probably come down to his physiology more than any "skill".
With dynamic input methods such as predictive typing with correction it may easily be possible to exceed 255 words per minute. This is because you can use probability to compress input such that fewer keys are needed on average to obtain required words. May be a pain to learn but the entire WPM problem comes down to converting the limited capacity input data stream into words using as few bits as possible.
I've got a bit over 100 on my old rubber dome keyboard. Now I have cherry mx red switches which, while pleasant while coding, aren't as nice when you'd have to aim at high speeds.
