Next modelling contest ideas

so.. I decided to have a lill word with you folks on hosting the modeling contest

as i said it should be about steampunk augmentation. the idea is to create an individual that has become 'something more' through the use of steampunk gadgets, machinery implants and what not.. will it be something like Kroenen? long-dead body with a clockwork heart, or would it be a giant steampunk cyborg? or something else? that would be up to you to imagine. so heat up your steam boilers, energize your coils, ring the bells and blow the whistles :D and tell me what you think

EDIT: and a quote from Minimage, lill edited :p
Victorian era machinery, steam powered, utilized in the ascension of man. How will this be like? Will it be robotics? Will it be a vehicle? Will it be a robotic vehicle? Is it perhaps a backpack of beautiful machinery that enables one to amass the powers of the void or do you have another unique idea you find interesting? Experiment, have fun and present your own unique interpretation.

What do you think about this? Steampunk doesn't necessarily have to be sinister. For example; This is flipping awesome.. and it's steampunk.

Honestly, I have to agree with Stanakin. The team is a bit too narrow, especially if you still intend this to only apply to heroes and not all units. "Steampunk" as a theme could also be good - that way, it wouldn't have to be a specific Warcraft III unit transformed with steampunk, but it could simply be anything that is steampunk-ish.
However, I still think we should see if other users have other ideas for modeling contests and have a poll. I personally had a few: "Upgrade", which would be about taking a Warcraft 3 unit or hero, and "upgrading" it, making it more badass and awesome(for example: Footman --> The Captain, Bandit --> Bandit Lord, etc), but it may be a bit too similar to the "Promotion"\"Heroic Units" contest we had recently. Another idea I had was "Adventurer" - create a model representing a creature\person who travels the realm in search for quests and epic loot. Will probably involve things like backpacks, maps, lots of traveling tools, etc, but may also be seen in the modern MMORPG type of way.

Who said it was only heroes? It says Steampunk Augmentation. Augmentation. As in Improving and adding onto a unit/hero with steampunk elements.
It does not say only heroes. Any kind of unit will suffice. The topic is rather broad when you think about it.

Augment what you will, be it a hero, a footman or a creep to name a few.

How is that too vague? It's as broad as any other theme we've had in the past, such as "Warcraft Heroes", "Mounted Units", "Girls", etc. Broad themes are necessary when we have so few modelers around.
Anyway, I've proposed 2 other options. If we announce this thread by putting it in the notice board, I'm sure the few modelers who are still here would throw in their ideas as well.

Does it have to be a Unit/Hero, even? I personally love those, but Steampunk really lends itself well to Vehicles and Structures, IMO.

Also, I like your "Upgrade" idea, Deolrin (of course, given I came up with the last Modeling Contest theme, I'm sure I have a bias :p).

So you're basically telling us to just agree with whatever you say without thinking about it and then point 4 is that we have to think a little.. Makes sense.

Other than that, relax man.

I'd say we get at least.. say, 8 topics?
Having one "Steampunk Augmentation" and one "Steampunk" seems rather redundant.

Misha wants this contest, but we doesn't always get what we want. I would suggest doing what deolrin suggested;
Tagging this so that other modelers can see it and supply us with potential ideas. If no one minds this contest, we'll go this and thus everyone is happy.

If the public decides something else, then everyone besides Misha is happy.

As a person who won't be taking part in the competition and has not been involved in the 3D modelling community I assume it will not be appropriate for me to decide upon the theme of the competition. But as a general site member and a user of the modeller's wares, I am concerned with the usability and the practicality of the end resource. Whatsoever might be the end result of the prospective poll I will like to use this post as an opportunity to request the model-makers to include people of color if they are to make character models.

There is a dearth of colored characters in the model section. So far I have found only this one character which corresponds to the type in question. The project that I am currently involved in (link in sig) requires colored people because of the setting and unless I am really good with painting textures I cannot fathom converting an arthas or archmage into a convincing dark skinned character. Requesting artists rarely helps (unless you are friends with them).

So for convenience's sake please I urge you to include characters of colored skin in any future work of yours, competition or otherwise because mappers like me will continue to face major hindrances.

Thanks and regards

We need more entries, suggestions. Since a few people have argued about being narrow then opting for vagueness;

- Steampunk
- Adventuring (Basically, a model depicting adventures of old. By limiting it to old, we will rid outselves of shitloads of skyrim clones.)
- Mythology (Basically mythological creatures or reimaginations of them)
- Spirituality (Diablo is basically angels and demons, but why limit ourselves to christianity?)
- Necromancy
- Beings of Raw Energy. Elementals, Archons, ect.

I'd say we need at least 2-3 more topics and we'll set up a poll. What do you guys say?

There is a dearth of colored characters in the model section.

I don't consider the color of the skin a factor here. Nor do I find it a fitting contest theme.
It's so vague that it's insane. It's like starting a contest around the topic of "asians" or starting a contest around the topic "white people". It's utterly ridiculous.

You are misinterpreting me and I hope unintentionally.
If you will read my post again you will realize that I suggest including people of color (black or brown) in whichever theme you guys end up choosing.

Other than that I find that your choice of words and your demeanor to be very rude. (considering that you are moderator).

It seems humility carries no weight these days. You voice your opinions and someone will always be there to term them 'insane' and 'ridiculous' no matter how careful you were to placate them.

Rude? Really? Well, whatever. I shall give a tiny little history lesson. In the beginning of nordic storytelling, the goal was to scare and teach children. In adulthood, stories was to brag. To tell tales that was utterly ridiculous, about slaying monstrous beasts using your fists, drowning a fish in a lake and other utterly ridiculous feats of strength just for the hell of it, which often was rounded off with the main character getting laid and becoming ruler of a country.

When christianity swept in, the original method of teaching went into overdrive, trying by praising the feudal system and the system of kings and royalty. Trying to make the world black and white, paint the world in terms and sin and lust and make it a tool of indoctrination rather than teaching in its purest form.

Instead of a Viking who punches a dragon with a thousand teeth, makes it his coat, impresses a sweet babe with it and has some awesome loving, it was instead changed into a courageous knight who slays a dragon to free a princess only to be rewarded with the status of a noble and kind king.

Just got an idea.

- Vikings of Badassery. Look up an old folk tale and reimagine the lead viking into something utterly ridiculous.

Anyhow, back to the topic at hand. Warcraft 3 is based on Norse Mythology as a foundation. Thus in this world, there are no asians, there are no black people. Instead they are referred to as Pandas, Trolls and Orcs. It is the role that they've attained. The original interpretations was basically differing creatures of darkness. When you are finding me rude for saying that we don't "Need" more racial diversity, I don't get you man, seriously. I do not. You want a black male/female. Then request a person to individually make it for you instead of demanding we should add more of them.

Now, I'm not saying that people couldn't do it either. I'm just saying that demanding something is silly. You may only recommend, not demand. That is the reality of the hive. You should know this.
Now; If you really want someone to make an asian or black character, then I suppose you could do this if the adventurer suggestion wins. Which I doubt it will. Seriously, it's boring.

As for blacks as a whole, as a nordic male growing up with pale and open minded people, we have never dissed black people, but we've never seen any need to modify our mythology and fantasy to fit them in. And yes, I am rude.

Personally, I don't care much for black people, because I know little about the stories and mythology of black people, their culture is entirely foreign and as a fantasy creation, you create an itteration of yourself, an emodiment of yourself. As I am a nordic white man, I will make my creatiions like this, because in a sense I create a being that is myself within the span of a fictional universe where I hold the power.

I wouldn't create a black man simply because of that reason,
So if you want convenience, Lovely, then request the models yourself, instead.

And Yes, I most likely am rude, Most people find my bluntless rude. Shit happens.

Being black is not a culture.
Jesus christ, do you have any idea how racist you actually are, assuming black people do not share your culture and, indeed, all have the same culture ("their culture")?

Holy cow I didn't post fast enough. I'll have to take my time later, but in short:
  • NKnight, your post was thoughtful and well-reasoned. Now that you point it out, I too am surprised at how few colored representations there are in Wc3 Modelling (have you seen Stanakin's "Pirate Lord", though?).
  • NKnight, while it doesn't particularly affect me, I can appreciate your desire and wish you the best of luck.
  • MiniMage, he wasn't suggesting a Theme; he was posting a suggestion that regardless of theme, some modeler(s) consider incorporating persons of color in their model.
  • MiniMage, thank you for compiling a short list of potential contest ideas. I will have to throw a few more on there...

Let's all take a deep breath everyone.

Jesus christ, do you have any idea how racist you actually are, assuming black people do not share your culture and, indeed, all have the same culture ("their culture")?

We are building misunderstandings upon misunderstandings; I was referring to them in the context of fantasy. Different races has always been represented in a cultural context. Racist or not, this is how it's done for the most part. I'm not saying that black people in real life are a culture. I merely stated that the embodiement of various races in warcraft has been done through personifications within new races, new culture and thus presented as a package. For example; Pandarens presented in a asian dynasty kind of package. I stated that Orcs also embodied races; While orcs, trolls and goblins normally in the more typical fantasy aspect has always been presented as mere badies, creatures of the dark and evil.

Trolls for example, has a little Jamaican culture, some voodoo doctors, a cool accent and interesting trinkets and lore to expand this fictional race using a generalized culture to breathe more life into them.

I'm not saying that other races of people can not be added, I'm just saying that there has never been a real need as far as I can tell. There was a guy that released an entire pack of them a while ago, but it feels like they were rather glanced over, even though they were well made.

So; If one were to submit a black person, for example; Which assuming that you follow the suggestions we've set up so far, you'd go with the adventurer, then present the character within a context of your choosing.

Stanakin, this is not the only thing that I found to be extremely racist about MiniMage's post. I mean, holy hell. I am just absolutely appalled.
Really? I merely pointed out the absurdity of putting in a black man for the sake of a black man; Or any other race for that matter; that's what I intended anyhow.

I'm just saying that nordic mythology and fantasy presented has always has a rather clear focus on the white people. Take lord of the rings, for example.
Can anyone of you locate any black people? That's what I am saying, or well, trying to. In modern fantasy, black people are, here as well, presented with a cultural context;
As a introductory plot mechanism to build on. That's what I am saying. There's a lot of culture surrounding various heritages around the world. I know very little of these.

Summarized, I wasn't intending to be racist, although my phrasing may have been interpreted as such.

this has gotten a lill bit too random o_o get back on track guys..

Uh, yeah. Let's do that.

I'll get to the rest of this later, but on-topic:

I'm glad you put together a (current) list, but (and I'm sorry to have to say this), I'm afraid some of those are a bit too wide, too vague. I know it must be annoying to consider that, given all of us crying for "less specificity! more options!", but it's a very fine line to walk.

For example, take "Mythology". You talking all of any culture's mythology? That's crazy-huge. On the other hand, "Christian Mythology" or perhaps "Mythology of One Particular Tribe" (silly example, bear with me) would be, perhaps, too narrow. Instead, I would suggest "Greek Mythology", or "Norse Mythology"... or shake it up with "Indian Mythology" or "African Mythology" or "Pacific Islander Mythology" (<- that last one, given the sheer number of isles, might still be too vague).

"Steampunk" is probably fine as is (though to narrow it, we could go for "Steampunk Characters (units/heroes)" as opposed to vehicles or buildings... "Adventuring" is unique enough to stand despite some vagueness (conjures images of Dwarven Expeditions or Goblin Outposts or Human Adventurers...)
"Energy Beings" might be pretty decent... "Necromancy might be a tad specific (but write it right, and it could be alright (lol))... Meh.

Consider my "Demotion" idea (opposite of "Promotion") added to the list, please.

Well, originally, we had for example compressed steampunk to steampunk augmentation, but for some reason that was considered to be too narrow.
So I went for vague intentionally. Demotion.. Hm, why not? Updated list below.

another idea is create your own myth/legend.
Seems more like a part of a literary contest. If one were allowed to create your own mythology it would really be too much freedom, I think. At least in a modeling context.

As for the mythology topic from earlier, I find the open-ness to be refreshing here. There's a lot of mythological beasts, why limit ourselves? Granted, a short summary of what you've created and where the mythological beast comes from would always be appreciated with the entry, since we need to know what it is. XD

- Steampunk
- Adventuring (Basically, a model depicting adventures of old. By limiting it to old, we will rid outselves of shitloads of skyrim clones.)
~ Vikings of Badassery (Basically look up old viking tales and personify them. Although this might just be adventuring when I think about it.
- Mythology (Basically mythological creatures or reimaginations of them)
- Spirituality (Diablo is basically angels and demons, but why limit ourselves to christianity?)
- Necromancy
- Beings of Raw Energy. Elementals, Archons, ect.
- Hero Demotion (opposite of "Promotion")

I'd say at least one more and we could set up a poll. If you guys have more; However, that's all okay. I'll add those too if you suggest them in time.
Let's keep this thread open for a day or two just to ensure that that time is given to the people here.

I see that the thread has significantly derailed towards oblivion.

MiniMage, while I understand your point about the absurdity of adding black characters for the sake of black characters, no matter the good points you've actually made, it is still wrong on many others, all of which stems from the fact that you have a one-sided view of the whole thing which you even confirmed a couple of posts back.

This is something which is not a tolerable public display. I sincerely hope this won't be repeated again. Take it to the PM's if you really have to.

I won't remove posts now for the sake of continuity, but any further discussion on this topic in any sense, whether good or bad, will be severely sanctioned.

I trust you all to keep the topic on course until we've dealt with the list of possible themes. Any further derailment will end in closure of the thread and I'll be setting up the poll with the suggestions already present and you won't have the chance to change the given ideas.

Keep it civil, and keep it neutral.

I actually don't mind if you clean up the thread. You can start with NKnight001's post, then remove posts to the last post that I made, with the exception of Dat-C3's post as it was on topic.
This would clean up the thread while not breaking it, continuity would still be retained. Apologies. It shall not be done again. I shall do as originally intended, just ignore it, the next time.

Anyhow, keep the modeling contest ideas going, people.

I don't understand the "spirituality" theme, if it means angels and demons as you say, then it already fits in "mythology".

Well, spirituality basically refer to mythological beings; However what is connected to all of these is that it's what humans become, after death.
Either you become an angel or you become a devil. But this is christianity. There's many interpretations of what directions you can go, judging by religion.

But I donno, It could probably be yammed into mythology, but idonno. When I hear mythology, I think mythological beasts.
Grendel, Water Serpents, Barghasts, Baba Yaga, Werewolves, Fenrir, Garm ect.

-Grendel? :p

Personally, I think 3-5 is plenty of options for a Poll like this; we've got more than that.

Grendel; http://www.chrisscalf.com/Sci Fi Portfolio/SciFi Html/Swamp Beast.html
Basically a gigantic swamp beast.

The story; King Hrotgar of Denmark raised a magnificent Mead Hall which he named Heorot as a reward to his brave warriors. Within, loud and grand parties were held. A volume so loud that it was heard far and wide. This awoke Grendel. A swamp beast like none other, the height of two men and strength of ten men and cleverness akin to a human. As the jolly partying continued, the slumbering beast woke up. Thirty of the of the kings men were slained that day. This event was something that started a 12 year old stretch of death and misery, Of carnage and destruction.

As the danes started to lose hope, they sent word for the swedes. Which reached the King of the Goths, who choose to send his son. When they arrived, Hrotgar and Beowulf, the prince, set up a plan. To lure in the magnificent beast with a Grand party, while using the invited guests as bait.

As the beast echoed towards the hall with each step, Beowulf realized that Grendel, being a beast of monstrous size and did strength, didn't actually use weapons. Beowulf pondered on the best way to deal with the beast and then came to realization that he probably shouldn't use weapons. Probably wouldn't be a challenge if he used them. Brilliant.

As Grendel entered the hall, Beowulf jumped down on Grendels back from roof of the building and grabbed and ripped off one of Grendels arms as he hit the ground. As the blood of the beast pumped out of the beast, the beast roared in pain and fled back to his resting place where it died of blood loss and shock.

As for the member -Grendel, he was originally named Ampharos_222.

Just make sure to leave one space open as "Other: Please Explain", and people can add their own. Lets'a go! :p

Hmm, I donno. I still say we should wait at least a day or two. I can probably scratch down "Other; Please explain" as an additional topic though.

For the record, Kyrib0, when you said "dwarven exploration teams" and "human adventurers" and such, that's more or less what I'm actually aiming for. It is meant to be a rather broad theme. It just has to look like someone who's out there to adventure, not to fight a war or something - traveler gear, backpacks, maps, compasses, whatever. He could still be a knight or something, or wear armor, but it needs to be obvious that the person is not a soldier, but an adventurer, which should be up to the contestant to demonstrate and for the judges to judge. :)

By the way, before we can even think about starting this contest, we still need the judging results for the previous one. Kyrbi0, how are those coming along? Did anyone report back to you?
