New Content Discussion [SPOILER]

It looks like the dialogue/camp section in Bloodclaw Three will be preeeetty dialogue heavy (for those who want to read everything)
Moreso than the one in Prelude One.
This is mostly the result of a number of new characters showing up.
Like always, it will be completely optional/you can only read what you are interested in.

The next mission (Bloodclaw Four) probably won't have any though.
Yeah, family reunions tend to be like that... lots of optional dialogues.

Soooo, can't wait to see the relationship betwen siblings, should be fun, i can just see Gardon hair going grayer by the second with Hotar, specialy since he will have to deal with all of his children + Ghost of bad decision + Garan ghost, i will be honest, hotar i am the one looking forword the most towards

My thoughts on Bloodclaw three mission is that I more or less expected that this map will be the old Grand Crusade of the Golden Guard map. It also was nice to see how Gardon is with his children like Gardon is far from the perfect father or great father but if you consider his personality and everything that happens to him all throughout his life the way he treats his children was good. Hope to see more showcasing of arkain characters. I haven't beaten the map yet because the second phase caught me off guard and its time for me to turn myself in for the day haha. Hopefully I can finish it tomorrow.

Btw what happened to the knight of kome? I don't remember them getting wiped out or something or did they got wiped out? Maybe they are just somewhere in the kingdom fighting for Gardon I kinda miss having to use them.

So, nice Chapter, first off, Tojaz op, like op op, like 1800 life? it may be an result of having 15 on all stats, i think that shield tojaz has might give more then just 5 defense and 200 health, Vail and Larine shouldn't bring their children in their spite, Something tell me Gordon Wine being accidently spilled was by purpose, Gardon Schizophrenia worsen, The Imperial Army continues to be based on romans i see, nice nice, Hotor really shouldn't have tried to accuse his half sister like that, something tell me vail used the fact gardon left immediatly for war to bring spew bullshit in hotor ears, also, wonder if Theodor of Kome it's still alive

Why does Zurae's icon look so "different" from everyone else? Also the second part of the mission is just too much for normal difficulty. Huge attacks at front gate while i'm getting multiple drops at the back of my base.

It's Very hard to defend from 4 fronts (ire side, the gate facing the sea, the upper part of the base and the lower part) with level 10 enemy heroes in each wave + siege equipment
Even with all heroes we have it's still very difficult to pass 12 minute and the enemy never give a chance to at least build a proper defense

it's doable
-if the old bases are still there.
-Some dragons maybe?
-The economy I had before the defends phase.
-Maybe some reinforcement?
(Played on Hard diff)
Any tips?

I have uploaded a small hotfix with a few changes:
  • Slightly decreased the size of special attack spawns in phase 2
  • Increased the starting resources in phase 2
  • Added some items for destroying the outer Imperial bases in phase 1
  • Tojaz's special ability now transfers 300 instead of 200 hit points
  • Fixed the final part of the ending cutscene not appearing properly

I am not going to nerf phase 2's waves too much for now as you have a lot of heroes to utilize.

Why does Zurae's icon look so "different" from everyone else?
If anyone wants to make a better icon for her, I would gladly use that instead.
I don't really like the current one myself, I think the skin creator took it from another game, but a screenshot icon also did not look great for her.

i dunno man, i'm still dying at the 2nd phase 13 min mark after so many tries even after the hotfix. Don't really want another nerf so i'll wait to see how others deal with the 2nd phase.

Edit: ok i made it to the 8 min mark with some tips and still get overwhelmed at front line.

I'll be honest... I don't see how the second phase is possible. I reloaded several times, tried abandoning the main base to focus on the eastern attacks, expanding to another gold mine... The furthest I've gotten is about 8 minutes remaining.

Both the imperial army and the imperial legion attacking at the same time makes it insufferable. You just have about 10 seconds when one attacks for the other to arrive. You can't even try to engage them aggressively because the imperial shore fighters like to drop right on Ira so you need to be able to defend her.

Also, near the start of phase 2, the east legion and the shore fighters attack you in the west just before the eastern enemies attack. Meaning you practically cannot defend your base without losing Ira. I tried building towers, but even when starting them the moment phase 2 started, they weren't finished by the time the east legion attacked.
And even when I was lucky enough for my towers to survive long enough to defend my base and I managed to hold on to both Ira and my base... the 9 minute 30 attack destroys me. I have all my heroes and 74 food of army in the east, and I cannot for the life of me defeat the imperial army and legion's attack. And even when I survive more than a minute, the shore fighters drop behind me, destroy whatever towers I constructed to protect Ira and finish her.

Overall, I'd say even if we only had to deal with the eastern attacks, that would be quite a challenging defense chapter.
I think we need way more time to actually build up defenses and build an actual army (I'm pretty sure Shadowmages would be awesome in this section, but I was never able to do anything else than replace my constantly dying Banishers).
Also, the western enemies need to either be severely toned down, or they need to stop attacking at the same time or just before the eastern armies. Maybe they could also have a few less heroes, especially the starfall hero (makes towers almost unviable to defend) and the paladin (he can just keep surviving with divine shield when you need to deal with enemies quickly to get in position for the next attack, or go straight for Ira when he's invulnerable if he feels like it).

Sorry for the rant. It's just that I played a good part of the True story on hard, and despite that, that single section on normal is genuinely the hardest level I've ever played. I don't know if someone else managed it or how they did it, but that's beyond my abilities...

Edit : As a precision, I downloaded the map this afternoon, so I played on the latest hotfix.

Had a lot of fun playing this mission phase 1, but phase 2 in hard looks quite challenging. I look forward watching a vid of a player finding a strat to do it, because I am unable to achieve it.

I did it with cheats, and even then (loooooooots of towers, 100/100 army), my army was systematically decimated, except my heroes, between waves. I would say that one of the main challenge is the location of the portal. Everything is so narrow there, so it is difficult to maneuver your troops (for example to interrupt a channeling spell).

I will try Shadowmages at some point, maybe their wave spell could work against big chunks of troops?

Thanks for the great mission :)

To think that someone I won't call out said phase two was too easy... :P

I have uploaded another hotfix:
  • The second "special" wave that seems to kickstart the moment people had most trouble has been weakened
  • Some units, buildings & starting resources have been added for phase 2 (including a certain elite unit type which also no longer costs food)
  • Initial waves have for phase two been delayed to give more build up time
  • Western waves will take longer until they send their heroes
  • The final part of the ending cutscene ACTUALLY WORKS now

Quick question. Can picking a dialogue option be a choice ? Like if we talk to a character about something specific, does it ever change something later or give access to more dialogues in another discussion ? Asking to know whether I need to watch the conversations again or I can just skip them.

At the time of writing, only talking to Ira about her demons in Bloodclaw Two is saved as a choice dialogue-wise.

There is no such saved dialogue in Bloodclaw Three and this is not going to be something I intend to use too much in general.

Just played through the updated version :

Gameplay :
  • Great work on the balance ! It's much more approachable with more breathing room to make a real army and set up defenses. But the attacks remain very challenging. This is what my 100 food army looked like after the final eastern attack wave :
1759349688958.png
I understand that the levels of players can be very different but, to me, the current version is more in line with Arkain normal difficulty.
  • As a whole, the level is very well designed. In phase 1, you have a very solid back and forth with the arrival of reinforcements and the enemy attack waves. The undead bonus objective is manageable while very easily ignored, which is good.
  • Even if we still have access to the same units as before, the heroes and unique reinforcements are enough that the level feels fresh.
  • I really like most of the heroes' skillsets. Tojaz in particular really reflects his character well : defensive abilities with a bit of magic but no active ultimate (since in his short story, he was told he didn't really have a future as a mage). The only one I'm on the fence about is Claire Greendale's. Mostly, her healing ability. While it's quite good for its cost, it has such a long cooldown that it's difficult to use it reliably, especially since it can easily be dispelled. Also the short range doesn't help : since the cooldown is long, you want to save it for a unit that is in a really bad situation, but the short range means Claire usually won't make it before the target dies.

Story :
  • Yeah ! The heirs of Zyainor unite !.. in defying orders, but unite all the same. The conflict between the human and elven children will definitely play a big role, but I hope we have the means to fix it somehow.
  • Velina is definitely going through a rebellious phase (I hope these don't go on for a few centuries for elves). Though I can understand it, Hotar was very out of line here. Ironically, each side seems to be convinced the other's mother is turning them against the other. I wonder how true that is for Vail. That seems out of character, but we haven't seen her enough to be sure, and she loves her children enough to act against any perceived threat to them with extreme prejudice, she also is quite suspicious of Larine. Meya is definitely the one who tipped Velina off, so we'll likely see more on the path of Beauty. I wonder if in that path, Velina also leaves to join Guardon.
  • Laura's necklace is... interesting. In terms of stats, it is identical to a mind control collar of the ironfist, but it's said her mother gave it to her, and Laura mentionned hers sparckled more than her mother's. Did Claire give her her own necklace and kept a fake ? Or was she given one more and instructed to give it to her daughter when her involvement with Hotar became known ? She doesn't seem mind controlled but neither did her mother. She also tipped off Thanok behind Hotar's back. If she's mind controlled, I wonder if it's to obey Thanok or Guardon...
  • Parlea is absolutely adorable, if a bit pitiful. Though she might need help to kick off the whole torture thing (I hope we get to see more of that, rather than just hear about it). I wonder if she did something to Tojaz unknowingly (or if Birram did knowingly) because this kind of devotion doesn't seem very natural (He even couldn't go against her wishes to protect her and himself). Same for his complete lack of resentment about his family's death.
  • Catherine getting rid of the alcoohol supplies definitely makes me trust her more than anything else she's done. Also it just made me think a terrible thought. What if Guardon's flask item gave him debuffs, since his addiction starts to become problematic. That way, if he can beat it in the campaign, it will be a buff.
  • I'm happy if a bit surprised that Ira doesn't seem to be an undead spy (since she both advised the destruction of the Rohir and was targeted by their leader a free necromancer). There's definitely still more to her than meets the eye (eh... eye) but she seems loyal enough and her lie about the skull seemed justified. (Though, does that mean we just gave her some random skull and she threw it on the side of the road afterwards..? I wonder if that's the end of it)
  • Finally when choosing who to take to the invasion, I went with the elven twins because I thought that was most like Guardon. It keeps Velina in sight, since she seems closest to rebel, it gives Parlea experience and doesn't leave her idle with her "hobby" and it also protects the legitimate children, ensuring they can rejoin Vail and Zyainor has a future if the invasion fails. Overall, it seems like the best way to make it so all the remaining children make it out and don't rebel. (Though if I learn the portal's been overrun on the side of Arkain after the invasion and we lost whoever remained behind... I'll be very upset !)

Also I replayed the last level to see the changes : the level is very solid. The teleporting of the allied armies helps to set up a tug of war that you can more easily help with. And the allies no longer steamroll the imperials which is very good both for balance and for doing side objectives. Overall, the mission seems to be in a very nice place !

Be honest, you picked them because you want to see Parlea tear someone's eyes out. :p
And their tongue. And their arms. And their legs. And their bones. And turn their blood into acid.

Though, does that mean we just gave her some random skull and she threw it on the side of the road afterwards..?
Yes. :P

U know, this gave me an thought, it could be very well possible that Vail sent the spys because she knew Velina was getting into troubles with undead's, or she suspected it...now, i am not saying that if it did happen she was justified, she wasn't, but vail and gardon don't have good experiences with undead, so she may have looked out for her....or not who its just an theory

Speaking of her, i wished Gardon tried to defend himself when she brought up Lerrig, i mean like it or not, the guy did join forces with demons, and was an idiot afterwards about the whole thing..now having zed eat him up was an overreaction on gardon part, but frankly Lerrig kinda had it coming
Laura's necklace is... interesting. Frankly originaly i thought it was Merlon own Necklace, he had one if i am not mistaken, and since i am going to asume merlon was her father, but then again it could be possible otherwise

Frankly, i think Gardon needs to have an loooooooong Family talk with everyone....specialy the two misses, and the phantoms in his head.....and possible the extended family...AND Brian..........frankly Gardon could use therapy..

Here is my review of chapter 3:

Gameplay:
  • The mission is well balanced now, and it's really fun to control all the different heroes!
  • Banishers, Ironforged and Cavalry are an unbeatable combo. (Ok, maybe not unbeatable, but they are very good.)
  • The new heroes are fun, but I wish we had ships. I wanted to take the fight to the imperials, since this map is a modified version of the Golden Crusade. (I understand why we couldn't build them, it would have made the holdout trivial, if we could destroy the imperial bases in phase 1.)

Story:
  • I like all of Gardon's children, there is SO MUCH potential in all of them, they are very well written, and all of them are interesting.
  • Gardon is a better dad than I expected. He was already my favorite character, but now, after seeing him interact with his children, I like him even more.
  • Zurae is awesome, her personality is fun, and her abilities are useful. Hotar should know better, than to accuse his half-sisters of killing Garan for no reason. I admit, I'm biased towards Parlea and Velina, because they are Larine's children.
  • Is Laura under mind control, like her mother? This reminds me, that we still don't know what the amulets are exactly, or how they work. Laura also said her amulet sparkles... I wonder what that means?
  • So... Ira lied about the skull, but she did it for good reasons... I'm still not convinced. It's good that Gardon has earned her trust, but just between us my dear Ira, I haven't done it because you asked me to, but because I'm still salty about the undead's betrayal at the Gate of Hell. lol
  • I decided to leave Zurae and Hotar at the portal. Going into the empire is dangerous, and they are Zyainor's future. Also, I'd like to see Parlea and Velina interact with Gardon more. I'm sure Parlea will find this vacation with her dad exciting. She will have plenty of opportunities to indulge in her hobby.
  • What is Brian doing here? More importantly, what has he been doing for the last two decades?

Another great mission, I'm really excited to see what awaits us beyond the portal!

Really good new chapter, loved the chance to learn more about all of Gardon's children through the optional dialogue. It's really interesting how the personal and political intersect for Gardon's children and their relationships with another and to their father. From a lot of the new interactions I get the sense Gardon would've been an excellent parent if he wasn't responsible for a large and powerful yet deeply threatened state, which is pretty consistent with what we know about him. I have a lot of thoughts about the extended Bloodclaw family, but I think that the choice at the end of this mission is a pretty thorny one and wanted to give some thoughts on it.

First of all, Catherine was 100% right that Gardon could only take one set of his kids. Hotar and to a lesser extent Velina would never be effective working with people from the other branch of the family, so it was the right call to take only some of the royal family. At first I thought that Hotar was being incredibly cruel and inexcusably out of line accusing Parlea and Velina of being involved in Garan's death, but on further thought he's not crazy for being suspicious. An ambitious bastard sibling scheming to steal the throne of the Zyaise Empire? Not so inconceivable when you realize that Gardon is currently doing that exact thing with the Empire. By reading the short stories we probably know more about Parlea and Velina than Hotar would, and of course know how Garan actually died. Nonetheless it's pretty rash to straight up accuse your half sister of murder in broad daylight.

When choosing who to take to Rodan I was honestly thinking more about the personal side of the decision rather than the political, which is probably a real bad way to be making these choice in hindsight. I figured it would be important for Gardon to demonstrate that he trusted his illegitimate children after they had just been questioned so publicly, both to Velina and Parlea themselves as well as his other children, hopefully working against future conflict between the two branches. In the back of my head I couldn't help but note that it would be a terrible idea to take the reigning monarch and the next two people in line for the throne on an incredibly dangerous mission. Cynically, it would be smarter to take Parlea and Velina over the trueborn children. This made me worry a little that choosing the half-elves would result in Velina saying something like "Oh I see, I guess we're the expendable ones right? Can't risk Zurae's neck, but we're fair game...". However, it seems like Velina is pretty fair despite having some justified resentment for her father.

I'm really interested to see where the story goes from here, as this choice seems like a major story branch very early on.

Thinking about the choice of who of Bloodclaw's offsprings will be with us in attacking the Empire, what if bringing Velina and Parlea is a bad choice for the future?
We know Salana is going to be back sooner or later, and probably the undead elves will help her to retake the elven kingdom from any Zyainor influence. What will be Larine's fate then?
That could be bonded to this choice of bring Larine's twins with us:
  • If Parlea and Velina are with Bloodclaw, they couldn't aid their mother in the defense of the kingdom against the undead, and probably Larine will ended kill by Salana or someone else.
  • In the other hand, if both of them stay in Arkain, they will aid Larine against this threat. However, this will left the portal with just and small force and no heroes or generals to defend it, and that could be a big mistake.
  • Also, what if Salana and the others spares Larine's life cuz of her daughters? Maybe Salana will just kill Herdon and Tormin, and break Larine's ring to "free" her of Bloodclaw's control (Larine seems to be in true love with Bloodclaw, so I doubt about this) .Either that, or Parlea and Velina save their mother in the last second and run to Zyainor.

Anyway, to current mission was a real challenge since we need to control at least eight heroes, and the enemies didn't make it easy either.
Very well done.

For me, bringing the twin Elves was much better alternative than bringing the future heirs of Zyainor.

  • First, the risks of the Empire targeting them just for being connected to Gardon was high. Which the twins aren't at risk because they couldn't tell if they're his children.
  • Second, bringing the twins would give them battle experience they needed.
  • Third, just remember that the counter invasion was a minimalist in setting. They can't risk bringing them all in one place. And it's Rodan, we don't sure that there would be friendlies inside, after all these years of absence.
  • Fourth, fighting the Emperor himself would be risky for the heirs in general, much more on the legally recognised heirs like Zurae and Hotar.
  • Fifth, they can't agree mutually if I mixed up who to bring. Can't bring both Parlea and Hotar, nor Zurae and Velina, nor Zurae and Parlea, and especially Velina and Hotar. At least the two can hold the fort, and if they fail, they can teleport back to Zyaise capital.
  • Lastly, the other fronts can hold by themselves. Catherine really is a woman of her word, she can hold the most hard-headed and boneheaded Imperials. Only time will tell if the counterattack Gardon launched will be successful.

And if I'm Gardon, I am doing the same thing.

Hey Shar i was wondering, does the nation of Zyainor has acces to Destructors? if i am not mistaken Gardon got his hand on a few during legends
They had access to them to some extent, yes.
I am not going to add them to their tech tree though, you got dragons.
Lorewise they played a role in the construction of the new Zyaise fleet however.

Some questions:
Will we get access to actual Ca'rach having a dragon form? That would be cool and unique to the Zyaise faction, could possibly replace the original dragons. I also miss using the dragons. Kinda wish we had access to the destructors in specific missions though. Kind of like the Retka mission and final mission.

Does Kenos still have access to the fire revenants. Though the Order of Flame has that technique, does he still use it or have flame revenants at his beck and call?

Hey Shar, from what i seen in the keep of fates "under conststruction" areas after lifting the fog of war with cheats.....there are like..nearly 60 paths in total if we are to take every circle of power, are u trying to make the longest campaign ever? because if yes,..WEll, good luck, because i am sure this campaign will at least be nearly double the length of legends,

Shar, what about the Timeline of Arkain? From what I see, it's still under construction. When will it be finished?

Ok finally finished this nightmare scenario, got whole base and army wiped out but clock ran out. Key was blocking north passs with summons and/or towers so the armies dont attack at same time. Even 20 - 30 seconds is enough to make it easier. Also tower up main base drop zone, especially south. Also keep elf on hotkey so you can block the aoe from archmage. Went with Dogs instead of cavalry, didnt build ironforged. Kept a reserve army for base until 8 minute mark. Went with Elves for next mission. Very micro intensive since you have too many heroes and you need to keep banishers healing and out of catapult and aoe.

Finished the chapter and it was great but the defence part is a real nightmare tbh I think shar is taking revenge on us after he made the seawall chapter easy

Also What is the chances that Brian is going to follow gardon to the imperial capital? I mean find it hard to think that Brian would let his student go face Largoth alone even if they are not in good terms since the end of the second void war

Unlikely.
But I think Brian would be more on the "I'll just attack on the other side of the capital to not make Gardon angry" type of helper. And only meet Gardon at the last moment or something.

Hey shar, i have an question, will Vlen still be part of Path of the heroes since he has his own path? or since he has his own path will he kinda just do his own thing
Maybe the whole Path thingy doesn't really mean isolation.
Vlen could still be part of Path of Heroes, its just that his plot development is now tied with them instead of being focused on or standing out.
While in his solo path, maybe there'd be some plot development that'd make him stand out compared to the group, but the group would still be a part of the plot - just as side characters now.

Just my opinion and own prediction tho.

Welcome back Shar, hope the break was good !

Nice upgrade for Zurae ! The first model was decent enough, but the new one looks really good. The staff feels more special, which is good since it's her unique item. Also is that a flower in her hair ? If so, that's a good reminder she became more of a socialite when growing up, as opposed to just a chaotic pyromancer.
The preview of the chapter 4 on the other hand is very worrying. I think the plan was to gate almost directly to the capital of Rodan and, while I could imagine the city looking so damaged after Gardon's passage, it looks like this is the state they find the city in. And I'm pretty sure the collapsed tower and burned house are not standard Rodanese aesthetic.
So either Gardon gated into the capital's slums, or something has happened since the expedition left the empire.

As for finishing the Bloodclaw path in 2025, that definitely sounds like quite the ordeal. That leads me to believe there aren't that many maps left in this path, so maybe it's possible to have an emperor ending for Gardon. Or maybe just a dead Gardon ending...
Either way, don't feel pressured to go too fast. Personally, I'm very happy with the current rate of releases !

so remember how Gardon described the empire to Ira not too long ago? well apparently Gardon hasn't updated his view on Rodan over the past 20 years.

Gardon finally gets to go home. As for the scores to settle, i kind of doubt that we will be able to finish that before 2025. Unless of course this path leads to the ca'laer's death, then I don't really see it happening.

p.s. at this point, i accepted that all of my fav charas will die to lord Shar. and i think its for the better.

Homecoming

The portal works like a neutral mercenary camp, so I have to keep a unit or zed near it, but it just ends up getting killed by Primus or the other attack waves anyway. + I cannot append to a group.

Also, why isn’t the Halberdier available? It feels a bit odd, almost like Gardon isn’t the king, since you mostly get regular soldiers instead of his elite units. Maybe its lore related, I’m not sure.

I rushed and somehow managed to destroy Kassia’s base (still no idea how), but it drained a ton of gold. Then Lucian and his twin showed up and completely wiped my army with their shocking wave.
