It's possible that a contest like that happened in the past but i have not checked.
The idea is that each submitted model must use the same default blizzard texture.
Bad example: default "Textures/Footman.blp"
Footman.jpg
Some examples of what can be made with it: a big guy with a sword, a creature that attacks with its armored beard and an armored frog. And it's all just @Callahan alone. Someone else might use it to make a spaceship or a building, for example.
Textures like teamcolor/teamglow, stuff for particle emitters, gutz.blp etc are obviously allowed without restriction. But "supplementary" textures for the main mesh could be penalized. The less extra textures you use the more points you get during the judging. One extra texture could be allowed without penalties even.
This all depends heavily on the selected texture. There'd have to be a discussion and a poll. Might even be one of those polls where only the people that will participate are allowed to vote.

So, I'm a bit confused about Reforged 2.0 and the direction of art on Warcraft 3, because they're trying to get everyone inspired by AI upscaled junk or whatever.

If there was a modeling contest, would it have to have three modes to incorporate the option of AI generated junk? Or is Hive sponsored by Microsoft in such a way that the new modeling contest would need to only allow AI generated junk for the same reason Hive used to do some Reforged only modeling contests to support the new stuff?
