Always offer an option to skip it, and try to keep the cinematics relatively short. If your map is single-player, you have a little more room, but usually players don't like extended breaks from playing. If it is really interesting, then I'll keep watching. If it looks like it was poorly made, I'll skip it.

Anyway, there are ways to convey the story without super-long cinematics. Sometimes you can cut out quite a bit of cinematics just by offering the possibility for your character to talk to people. That is a great & fun way to get the story out.

But I still like cinematics. I am just used to seeing a lot of poorly executed ones. Sadly, wc3 doesn't make cinematic making that easy, so some people get really lazy. Try not to fill it up with nonstop dialogue at one camera angle.

tl;dr Put sufficient work into making the cinematic a quality one, and it should be fine.

#3 seems like a fair option, I mean RPG are meant to give in expansive story lines by both gaming routes and cinematic scenes to the fullest. If its single player it should suffice, multi/co-op requires a good skipping.

press esc button incessantly because you want to skip it but its not skippable at all

I have plans in making this on my RPG, if I get more inspiration to do it.

The problem with cinematics in games is that they are either:

1.) Poorly made
2.) Just Plot movers

Cinematic need a lot of work to be interesting and a whole cinematic should focus on a small part of a story or a fight. Must be to the point and on the short side. So, only put 1 or 2 cinematic for your average game (because they can take a while to make), and don't use cinematics to move the plot. This is my opinion anyway.

If it has good voice acting, I could stay and watch it. Otherwise why not to make in-game conversation where you can freely move as the conversation goes on?
