64 gigabytes of ram is a lot but nvidia geforce gtx 580 is kind of old. my best pcs have cards in the 600 series. my laptop have a 630m card, 1 desptop have gtx 650 ti and the other have 660 ti.

580 is better than 660 TI...and 630 is a complete poop.
5XX is not very old, but either way, where you are in a series is a very big factor. 80 being the high end, in Nvidia's case, 60 being mid-high, and 30 being entry level.

each version have more cuda cores than the version before that and the 600 series is the oldest series that is sold in norway. even the 600 series is about to be sold out and the shops dont seem to order the 600 cards anymore but they still can if people ask for them. norway is behind the market in computer hardware as well so 16 gigabytes of ram is maximum.

Go be a good consumer and buy a new GPU every year then.
I gave my friend my old HD 4850 and he runs whatever he wants on highest, the only reason he is upgrading is because it doesn't support DX11.

Either way, according to charts of actual real world performance, which you can easily find online, 580 is nearly the same, but a bit better than 660 TI.
I really don't care about some GPU being theoretically better because it has a higher clock, or more shader units, etc. etc., show me actual real world performance (and of course, this also changes between different manufacturers that change things).

fine, just live in your own fantasy world where old is good but new is bad. in the real world however the latest cards are the best. the power of the CUDA cards however depends on the CPU because according to nvidia`s website the CUDA technology uses the CPU to gain a boost.

Thats not what we said. But a 660 will never be better than a 580. you can compare it to cars which comes with different engines.
If you for instance take a civic from 1997 and one from 2008, there is not just one car from each era, there are multiple variants with different engines.

If we say the civic from 1997 have the following engines:
1.4l 90hp
1.5l 105hp
1.6l 160hp

Then there is the 2008 variant with the following engines:
1.4l 100hp
1.5l 120hp
1.6l 200hp.
(these are not real number :))

If you compare them you can see that newer is not necessarily faster. The 1.6l honda from 1997 has more horsepower than the one from 2008, but the technology has improved since 1997, so the new 1.4l engine is better than the old one from 1997.

I hope that helped you understand. You don't just have to look at the year a GPU came out, but if it is a low, mid or high level GPU.

The first number defines the generation on a GPU, the rest for which "level" the card is in. Much like a car engine.

660 will always be better than 580. 580 isnt sold anymore.(at least in norwegian shops.) each series of nvidia cards are much better than the series before that and this is something i have heard from computer technicians.

Because computer technicians are infallible gods when it comes to credibility.

As much as hwcompare and other such sites are a place for a first glance, google some real world examples.
Reference is just a first indicator, look at how cards perform over games and other applications, and compare that. In this case, yes, 580 is better than 660 TI, and hence also better than 660.

If you think every series is magically superior in every way than the previous one, you are living in a dream.
Generally speaking for Nvidia series', each card is the one with a higher number in the previous series.
That is, 660 is like 570, 760 is like 670, etc.
This isn't pure science of course, but the performance follows that general guideline.

The nVidia website itself has graphs comparing FPS benchmarks in various games with various cards:
http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-580/performance
If you'd like to compare how a card actually holds up, go check there. Just because a card is sold out in a shop doesn't mean it's bad - when I upgraded my PC, they didn't have the 570, 580 or 660 in Israeli stores, but both the 550ti(my old card) and the 770(my new card) were available. I've been told by 'computer technicians', as well as a friend of mine who studies programming(or possibly his brother, who studies art, including 3D art, I can't recall which one) in Norway, that the series of the card doesn't matter, but rather how far along the series it goes. As a matter of fact, the 295 is arguably better than the 560. It uses old technology, and cannot handle some advanced techniques(I'm guessing mostly related to shaders and lighting), but it will still run most modern games on very high FPS counts.
