I thought the main difference between Sunni and Shiite Muslims was their beliefs in who should be the prophet (or whatever equivalent, I can't remember exactly) of Islam; one side believed the person needed to be descended from Muhammad, the other side didn't.

Kalif, Not prophet.
Muhammed (pbuh) was the last prophet according to Islam.
In Sunni, We pray the Obligatory Prayer and Sunna (Not Obligatory).
And In Shia they only pray the Obligatory, If I'm right they don't have the same Call to prayer (Adhan/Azan) as Sunni do.

and this thread reminds me how some people cant actually quote right :D

anyhow, i have a question though, what religion was the "main religion" in the islamic countries before Islam "came to life"?

before islame people worshiped stone statues, and there were no rules,
example: a women get pregnant, she have to decide wish a the 7-9 men is the father of the baby, it was a crazy age, and in arabic country most people are treaten like slaves, so there was human slaves

Sunni muslims belive that the califa after mohammad is abo baker friend of the prophet, and all who came after him
chiat muslims say that the califa after mohammad was starting from ali, and ending with the savior, al mahdi
