During Act 1 Magda mortally wounds Deckard Cain leading to his death. In the end Act cinimatics it is shown that they are giving Deckard Cain a funeral.

However how does that explain this?!

On the left we can clearly see Deckard Cain, alive and well. Below him is Leah who is mourning his death. The quest status is proof of this.

The only conclusion is that Deckard Cain did not really die and only pretended to die. He replaced his "corpse" with a dummy and no one bothered to check around town for him standing in plain sight. Deckard Cain is very shy after his fake death and will quickly disappear into his now locked house if one tries to talk to him.

Magda's magic caused paralysis. (clearly shown from him falling to the ground, struggling to move) While on his way to be cremated the effects subsided, he promptly thought of the town's zombie crisis, and feared he would be deemed a 'walking dead' by the towns people. Leah staged the cremation and tried to lock him in the house. Cain's old age and recent stress caused him to forget the reason of why he was in the house. Bored and wondering where Leah is, he walks outside; unwilling to talk to you as he doesn't remember any of the recent events - like who you are.

In a next expansion, an undead-looking Cain...

- Stay a while and listen, my friend.
- Cain! You live?!
- Oh, Maghda was merely a setback.
