Idea: Update in

In chat its displayed, but not at the forums.

How about displaying an message on the main site aswell, saying:
Updating is X minutes. Please finish your work and save.

I wrote a very long message and lost it because I didn`t knew the update was beginning.

Also, if you update, you could perhaps check the $_POST and if the user was trying to sent a message, display him:
Message cannot be send: We are backing up!
[MESSAGE].

That would be kinda nice.

No problem. Still, even if the message is displayed, can't you just make a DIV with the elapsed time to backup somewhere on top of each side? It would be really good.
(Only display when remaining time <= 01:00)
