Review - Hidden Oasis
(Version June 12th 2023)
Synopsis: Hidden Oasis is a two-player melee map. In the current state the map fails to meet standard melee criteria.
Map Aesthetics: The map tileset usage is acceptable, though it lacks some contrast. The visual aspects of the map would greatly benefit from better usage of props to give depth to the field. The aesthetics look a little flat. The trees are a little overused in the map in terms in terms of visual presence and a greater palette of doodads and other obstacles (including terrain) could be used to spice up the view.
Map Layout: The map is not quite mirrored, leaving clear asymmetry between the players - one of the players has a tree wall far away, and the edge is blocked with unpassable rocks. The macro layout is open and it could pack more things: creeps or strategic points. The big issue is the gaps between trees - this needs fixing.
Neutral Objectives: The neutral objectives and creep camps fit the theme, though their placement could be better. The expansion sites are quite heavily guarded for such a linear map, as well as the central fountain, which takes a lot of investment to utilize.
Map Gameplay: The gameplay does not meet the standard criteria due to lack of symmetry and the game-breaking gaps in tree lines. These need to be fixed.
Recommendations:
Fix the gaps between the trees and hilltops.
Fix the distance of the Starting Locations (they are too far away from the Gold Mines).
Fix the asymmetry in the map.
Additional emphasis could be put on enhancing the visual aesthetics of the map to improve visual clarity and depth of the map.
