Detached HDD

Hello.

I have installed laptop's HDD into my PC, but since I don't have any place to put it to hold it in case, I just layed it down on a flat surface and connected it.

Will this hurt that HDD?

No, it won't. I've had HDD's laying at the bottom of my case and even hanging vertically in the air, held up by the cables. HDD's have strong magnets that make the drive spin as it should.

There needs to be an air gap for heat dissipation. They do get surprisingly hot (because of passive cooling) and can overheat if packed too densely.

I know this is maybe stating the obvious, but why don't you just mount it in the case?

Because uhm, it's like 3 times smaller and I don't have the holder for it.

It's a 2.5' drive and the case likely only has space for 3.5' drives. You could get a tray to mount it with IIRC

I thought that might've been the case. Get a 2.5 -> 3.5 mount, they're really cheap.

Yup - adapters are usually cheap as they don't really change anything but either re-route signals or, in this case, make the bay smaller.

Try another one. They are seriously cheap. Even ebay has them for like a 1 dollar a pop

I have done this twice at least. You see the holes on the edges of the HDD? Do you have some string? Alright, let's go. Take some string and put it through two holes on the HDD and then through two holes on the case, then back through the other two holes on the HDD and to the other side of the case and tie a knot. There, you have a floating mounted HDD.
