It's a 2.5' drive and the case likely only has space for 3.5' drives. You could get a tray to mount it with IIRC

Yup - adapters are usually cheap as they don't really change anything but either re-route signals or, in this case, make the bay smaller.

Why would they even bother....

Try another one. They are seriously cheap. Even ebay has them for like a 1 dollar a pop

I have done this twice at least. You see the holes on the edges of the HDD? Do you have some string? Alright, let's go. Take some string and put it through two holes on the HDD and then through two holes on the case, then back through the other two holes on the HDD and to the other side of the case and tie a knot. There, you have a floating mounted HDD.
