I was wondering if it would be possible to host a non-hive related contest here :D

I was thinking of doing a contest where applicants have to create their own item, including an icon, a description, and a working example as a map :)

The winner of the contest will get their item featured in my Diablo III Warcraft map, referenced with their own quest :)

The contest itself is basically to create some more hype for the map, and hopefully attract some new Hive members through the D3W website :)

What say you??? :)

Yeah, baby. But then, this contest will be unfair. What if people have great ideas but can't creat good enough icons?

TH supporting this map: not really, and why would we care if it was? Also, assuming you in fact mean hive, then it still doesn't make it contest-worthy (arena, anyways) - he can have it on his own site or something.

Also, the race thing is a more general application and conforms to the standards of the arena. This is limited to specifically one map (explicitly and implicitly).

Request disguised as a contest.
My thoughts exactly.

However I wouldn't necessarily be against hosting contests to help support quality projects, the Hive is here to help mappers after all. I wouldn't have posted it here though. Send myself a PM, or post in Admin Contact. It would also take time and careful consideration.

This is in no way a contest disguised as a request xD How could it be? Ive provided no rules, or methods of submission :p I havent even given info regarding a closing date :)

I've currently got a request for project hosting, and am awaiting for a reply. So if the map was in fact, THW supported, would it qualify for a contest? :)

Sorry if this thread is in the wrong area. I wasnt really sure where it belonged myself :S

Judging by the past, it would not, but you could have a "contest" in your project section if you really wanted to.

If all else fails, thats probably the best bet :)

I applied for project hosting 2 months back, and have sent a few PM's, but I still havent had a reply :S If all else fails, what forum would you reccomend posting a contest like this? :D

Sorry to go off topic a bit :p

If they have a subforum and want to post it there, /care. However, in the arena, as far as I see it, requests disguised as contests should be gone then and there.
This is true, however having a contest to give attention to a map that deserves it, is a different story. I wouldn't accept these kinds of requests, but I would think about having a contest to promote a map, and help it by having users submit X for the map (X being the contest theme).

If hosting contests for an individual map is against the hives policy, its probably best I do it within the projects forum then :S

Otherwise you guys might get swamped with requets from other map makers :S and it would be unfair if I had a contest, and they could'nt :S

I sent a PM to Ralle, who forwarded it to Ghan04, so my request might get noticed ^^

It seems I've sat back and watched this show for too long without saying anything. So here are a couple of newsflashes:

  • @Post #1 by CloudWolf:
    • No advertising of your own site.
    • Don't post a request here disguised as a contest.
    • Yes, this is a request and yes, it is disguised as a contest. This is after all the Contest Submission section where people submit contests.
    • The honour of having credits in your map... What a prize. If I wanted to embarrass myself, I'd go and make something foolish like a request disguised as a contest!
See, you might not notice it, but the word credits means that you honour the person who made something for you, not the other way around.
  • @Post #4 by bananaHUNT: The theme's picked by lack of existing resources of that theme is, just like PurplePoot said: A lot more general then making a specific resource for 1 specific map.
  • @Post #6 by CloudWolf: You owe it to the community to spam the contest section with a request without following the rules of submitting a contest? You sure know how to return the favor...
  • @Post #7 by Gilles: Who decides what a quality map is? If this is accepted, keep next week free in your agenda, because there will be 200 Hivers posting their requests here as contests, claiming it's for their 'quality maps'.
  • @Post #9 by CloudWolf: Your lack of a proper format and info like rules, methods or closing date make it an unacceptable contest, but a contest nonetheless. If you thought you could post it here because you didn't get your map as a hosted project, you're wrong and you just should've waited until you did have a hosted project forum to put it in. That's no excuse to place it here.
  • @Post 10/11 by PurplePoot/CloudWolf: Not if all else fails. It's the first thing you do. And posting a request in the Contest Submission Section is one of the last things you do.
  • @Post #13 by Gilles: Same as with post #7: Who or what decides it's a map that deserves it? You're only allowing this because you personally like the map. That's no excuse to accept this. Neither is making contests for specific maps.

I suggest this thread should be either closed or moved to the Requests or Project Recruitment Section, the advertisement link in the first post to be censured and not to accept map-specific contests.

I quote: "I wouldn't accept these kinds of requests".
We as a staff would decide what a quality map is.

See that title above my avatar? I would think that I would. Of course I would consult the rest of the staff as well.

You're only allowing this because you personally like the map. That's no excuse to accept this. Neither is making contests for specific maps.[/list]
I again quote: "I wouldn't accept these kinds of requests".
Why is it unacceptable for specific maps to have contests? I already pointed out that we are a site dedicated to helping wc3 modders, and this would be an excellent way to promote someone's map.

Yes, but why only this map or this user? You're not helping the community that way, because others will think they can get a contest by sucking up and other ways to ruin the community.

By the way, the Arena is more for entertainment. If people look at it as a way to get 5 choices to pick the ideal resource from for their map, they will spam here, be ignored, know this is an unfair way of treating people and don't participate in any contest anymore. The result would be that with this way, you'd actually ruin the entire Arena.
So unless you want to change your job from Arema Moderator to Thread Deleter (Because you're most likely only find submissions that ask for a specific resource for a specific map when you accept this), I again suggest you don't allow this.

In my opinion you're making a lot of assumptions.
One way to avoid this would be to explicitly tell users that we will contact projects that we think should be supported, and will not accept any requests. Similar to the way we hire staff.

However this isn't the way to go about this, and these kinds of submissions are against the rules. See below for a possible way to get a contest of this kind hosted. Moved to archive.

I think, CloudWolf, you should follow these steps:

1) Apply D3W for a project forum (if it doesn't already have one)
2) Apply D3W for a hosted project (an upgrade of step 1)
3) Create a mini-contest in your hosted project forum and get a moderator to give a rep prize of like +10 to the winner.
