Card Duel
(best name I could come up with atm)

I recently watched and wanted to play Hearthstone,
the new blizzard card game. In fact, I was so hooked
on it I very quickly went and registered for the beta.
Little that I know they pick people at random and
its a closed beta.

Well blessings to the closed beta crap. If they did pick me,
I wouldn't have been motivated to actually make a game
similar to hearthstone in warcraft. Its also my first real
card game map idea, so everything is made from scratch.

But I like it where its going. In fact, I no longer feel that
I want to play hearthstone - I just want to make this map
so that I and the people who are interested in this kind of
experience would be able to endlessly draft and duel each
other. I feel like making this map to the end will be a
great competitive fun card experience in warcraft.

Mechanics

I took what I knew about hearthstone and implemented it.
In fact lot of hearthstone I like so you will find similarities
in what I envision the map to be. You don't own resources
or draw lands like in mtg for example, only gain mana. With
each turn your mana increases up to a point, which now I
say is 10 max mana. You use that mana to cast creatures
and spells.

Also, in hearthstone there is no instant-respond time. I like
this concept, which allows every player to play everything
they have in mind without worry of counterspells like in mtg.
Maybe the mage and hunters have some instant respond
spells, but those aren't that big of a deal to me.

Players will be able to play constructed with premade
decks or make decks themselves. They will also be able
to draft decks out of 40 3 card random picks, which I see
as really fun and entertaining.

Comments about anything are welcomed.
If you want to critique the map or some of
its mechanics, do so with a good reason.
I will delete troll or flaming comments.

The map is not complete and its not in
playable state. However you can see the
draft and the summoning mechanics as well
as the triggers. Keep in mind that I can post
an updated map at any time.

If you want to copy and re-use triggers from
this map, I leave it to you to decide if you
want to credit me or not.

I also really want to play hearthstone :3
Maybe if the beta is released for Europe (which it probably will soon), i think this game won't be played because Hearthstone is free. You'll probably need to make the game very unique to make it interesting to play after the release of Hearthstone.

Anyway, i can help you with your project with suggestions for units, gameplay and by doing beta testing.

Good luck on your project!

This isn't a competition to hearthstone. The fact that I say
I was inspired to make this from not playing hearthstone is
enough for people to know that I have borrowed most
mechanics from hearthstone. Its not even my intention to
compete with blizzard, even more ironically by doing a map
from their game inside of their game's editor :vw_death:

Well download the map, check it out and see the cards there.
There is always room for more, but 44 cards are good enough
for draft decks and pre-constructed fun.

So soon that Blizz has already sent out two (if I'm not mistaken) waves of beta keys for EU users.

There is lot of nonsense with hearthstone and EU.
Some get keys some don't. I am in the don't group

I'd suggest to make the map more appealing, make actual cards perhaps ? It is painful to look at right now.
You may want to make it multiplayer somehow, I don't think the hearthstone themed 10 minutes tops, one-on-one drop-in kind of gameplay will work too well with wc3 sessions.

Wow Card Game in the Warcraft III??! Looks interesting seems I want Yu-GI-Oh! I'll test it later Good Job~!
Can you make it an AI?

Thank you I am very excited about making it.
I think it will be a great addictive and fun card-based map.

Well Hearthstone is like Yu-Gi-Oh, minus the summoning concept and traps.

No sorry no AI in this one.
Is it that hard to find a friend, family or someone online to play?

I have no knowledge in making models or cutting images of cards.
If I knew how I would of done so. But since I don't this is the best
of my ability. If I learn in the future, I might change it.

Not my problem if you find it painful to look at the "non-cards" cards.
The concept is very similar, only the cards are icons.

Hearthstone doesn't have creatures moving and attacking. It has cards
My map has creatures. That's how we get balance I guess.

What do you mean make it multiplayer? Its a two player card duel. That's what hearthstone is too.

I mean a 3 or 5-way or a multiplayer with teams.
Hearthstone is borderline primitive which works well for the format it is aiming for but it results in duels that rarely last longer than 10 minutes.
I don't know how well it will work with warcraft sessions, I'd say it would be more interesting to have longer matches for more players.

You may also want to make a few rules of your own, hearthstone is pretty broken and all it is really about right now is charge, buff/bash on the enemy player right away and ignore whatever play he is doing.
I mean, I've seen 3~4 minute matches because of that BS.

Awesome map idea but is there any way we might end up seeing this map supported for more players like having a tournament?

As a YGO player myself, I can assure you that they can't be compared at all :'D They're totally different.

I meant to say that: Yu-Gi-Oh shares a common deck
building with games like Hearthstone, WoW TCG and
others. Unlike Magic The Gathering where you have to
plan for lands as resources, here you can just put spells
and creatures and always have a viable hand.

In Magic, half the game is how many times you fail to
make a mulligan. Especially in tournaments

I was never aiming for more than a two player match.
That is why I named it Card Duel. Not a really original name
but it serves my purpose.

You may be right, matches in the map might be 10 minutes each
at longest. But with the draft system, if you play 10 games in a row
that's 60-100 minutes. So I am not going for long games,
rather for enjoyable map which offers lots of ways to have fun.

As for broken things, I am not copying Hearthstone. I am making
my own mechanics. The thing that we share is that both my map
and hearthstone are based on warcraft so it might seem like I am
copying from hearthstone - but I'm not.

Awesome map idea but is there any way we might end up seeing this map supported for more players like having a tournament?

I want to. I believe the draft system I made in it will provide
endless hours of fun that will never die out. And I can always put
more cards in, which only means more draft fun.

And its not only draft. Constructed lets you build a deck of your
choosing. So I strongly believe that the map has strong potential
to be very playable and be viable for tournaments.

If it gets to that level, I can always add a tournament
game mode so that more players can participate. But I won't change
the 1 on 1 concept. That stays for good

I would love seeing you make a system so each player builds her own deck and can then craft more cards by defeating opponents in battle.

That is an interesting idea. But I am far from making an AI for the map.
If I however do make an AI, I can also try and make a sort of Campaign
mode, where you start with a weak deck and have to battle your way
to the top, earning cards and taking down opponents.

Yes, a Campaign would actually be really cool. I will ponder on the AI.
I'm sure I can do it. But first I want to make it player viable and release
the alpha and let you guys (and myself) play it with real opponents.

You said that this game is based of hearthstone, does that mean we will see the exact same card that's in hearthstone or will you make up your own?

Far from it. I took the concept and mechanics from Hearthstone
but I created completely new cards with abilities and spells.

You will find name similarities and some effect similarities
hence Hearthstone gets all from WoW. I don't bother to invent
new names but the effects are not nearly the same.

Here is what IMO is what I copied from Hearthstone without much modifying:

- Silence
- Taunt (called Defend in map)

Everything else I invented anew.

You can check the map at anytime and see
if you recognize anything else.

I recently got a beta key for HS and halted the project. I would release an alpha I just didn't know if anyone still wanted it.

I doubt this will be good enough to give a nice feel. Mostly because of visuals. They way you use HP and models are smart because you dont need a 2d model like in hearthstone. However it looks kinda bad.

Maybe the gameplay is good enough to lift it, I think I will try it once or twice when it comes out. Good luck!

The visuals are kinda good, and I've spent quite lot of time making the floating texts display correct information. That's not it.

Also the "idle" time and attack animations of units actually add to the gameplay, not take from it.

The time consumption is making the spell cards function and the way I've outlined it is lot of work. That's why I'm put off at it.
