Blizzard is hosting a custom map contest! Prizes will be distributed to the makers of the three best maps. Each winner gets $5000 and a trip to BlizzCon 2010, where attendees will have the opportunity to play and learn about your map. You have until September 11 to submit your work.

More details here.

Aren't we supposed to be a map-making community after all? Get working!

THIS CONTEST IS OPEN ONLY TO RESIDENTS OF THE UNITED STATES, CANADA, MEXICO, CHILE, ARGENTINA, AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND, SINGAPORE, FRANCE, BELGIUM, THE UNITED KINGDOM, LUXEMBOURG, GERMANY, AUSTRIA, SWITZERLAND, SWEDEN, FINLAND, DENMARK, NORWAY, SPAIN, IRELAND, RUSSIA, THE NETHERLANDS, SOUTH KOREA, TAIWAN, THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA, THE CZECH REPUBLIC, CROATIA, THE UKRAINE, POLAND, BULGARIA, AND HUNGARY WHICH ARE: (i) OVER THE AGE OF MAJORITY IN THEIR COUNTRY OF RESIDENCE ON THE DATE REFERENCED BELOW AS THE START DATE FOR THE CONTEST; AND (ii) WHO ARE NOT RESIDENTS OF THE STATES OF NORTH DAKOTA, VERMONT, CONNECTICUT, OR MARYLAND IN THE UNITED STATES; THE PROVINCE OF QUEBEC, CANADA; OR RESIDENTS OF THE AUSTRALIAN STATES OF VICTORIA, QUEENSLAND OR THE AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY ("ENTRANTS"). If you are under the legal age of majority in your country of residence, but are (i) over the age of 13 years of age and a resident of the United States of America, or a member country of the European Union other than Spain, or the United Kingdom; (ii) who is least 14 years of age and a resident of Spain, the United Kingdom, or Russia; or (iii) who is at least 15 years of age and is a resident of the Republic of Korea; and one of your parents or legal guardians must submit a signed, written statement that they have read, understood and agree to these Contest rules with your entry, and that such agreement constitutes acceptance of these Contest rules on behalf of you and themselves.

(i) A Map should be a "Custom," UMS map, and not 1v1, 2v2 or 3v3 Map (aka, "Melee Maps"). Melee Maps will not be considered in the judging process;
(ii) The Map shall not exceed 10 megabytes in size;
(iii) Voice over tracks that are incorporated into a Map shall be in the English language, and shall not feature explicit or obscene language;
(iv) All music featured in the Map must either be the entrant’s original musical composition and performance, or music from a Blizzard product; and
(v) The terms and conditions of the StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty End User License Agreement shall be strictly enforced, subject to these Rules. In the event that Sponsor feels that a Movie was created in violation of the foregoing agreements and/or policies, such as through the use of a "Private Server," that Map will be disqualified from the Contest.

Whoa I didnt know thousands can be given for mapmaking. Looks like both went high - esports get now higher prizes than ever, mapmaking also gets prizes for the 1st time even if not as big as the leagues/tours. I think one of the winners will be from sc2mapster.

I don't want to bring the bad news but you're all missing the big point... the rules, ya you're better reading them off so I'll just CnP the most important ones.

Well I'm out of the contest since I live in Quebec... somehow Blizzard is dumb when it comes to localization they sell European French in Quebec.... which means they login to the European servers instead of North America... lucky I bought the English version of it.

What I would be surprised is that the winners are just some strangers who arn't in a community I would laugh my ass off.

The list is like a list of the countries with which blizzard does business - has stores licensed by blizzard for their products. My country is listed, so go go. The age of gamers is also like from 15 (lulz sc2 will now need your mommy's permission) to hmm 21 but some old school players are like twenty something and that's nice. Now please tell me the majority here aren't under 18 or 16 cause I may not stay for long. I've no idea about the age of mapmakers.

New map makers that come today tend to be under 15 and veterans tend to be above.

btw, It's actually not fair...The ones who were in Beta had more time to practice with GE (no, your thoughts that I am crying now are wrong, I was in beta, I am just speaking the truth) also...
there comes also the question: Will they really check each map that fullfills the conditions? That might take ages...

anyway, if anyone is going to do it, I wish him luck...he will need it

Well it looks like I need to go out and buy a copy of StarCraft II and get down to work. I hope I can think of a really good idea to work with and find the time/motivation to work on it. The pressure is on!

So it's gonna be an Arcade or an RPG-like thing (Influences perhaps) cause those were also the top 2 in war3.

If only i knew what was possible with the SCII editor then i could probably think of something awesome but i don't even have knowledge of War3's JASS so...

Anyway i do hope someone here does something with it! Let's unban pivok and sign him up for this.

Read this bit too. It says that anyone in the EU (except for spain) who's over 13 can also enter as long as your parent or someone sends some written thingy to Blizz. A bit of a hassle, yes, but you still can enter.

what Pyritie is talking about is this part :
"If you are under the legal age of majority in your country of residence, but are (i) over the age of 13 years of age and a resident of the United States of America, or a member country of the European Union other than Spain, or the United Kingdom; (ii) who is least 14 years of age and a resident of Spain, the United Kingdom, or Russia; or (iii) who is at least 15 years of age and is a resident of the Republic of Korea; and one of your parents or legal guardians must submit a signed, written statement that they have read, understood and agree to these Contest rules with your entry, and that such agreement constitutes acceptance of these Contest rules on behalf of you and themselves."

Got it now?
