Best abilities for dragons

Well even dungeons and dragons had the elemental prefrences to the dragons natural breath weapon based on the color of the dragon, for example blue was electrical, green was poison, red and black was fire - don't remember the rest, but I'm sure you get the ideal.

lol I'd say blue is water or ice, depending on shading and what the dragon looks like. A water dragon is going to have more fins than an ice dragon with ice like spikes.
lightning would be yellow and have sharp points on it, sometimes in a lightning bolt fashion. Fire is red or black, of course. wind would be white, and Earth would be green or brown, sometimes both.

Dragons are creatures of great power, who have different abilities, that depend on origin, affliation and many other factors. Dragons can be obsorbers of some power, if they contact it for a long time, I think.
However some attacks just dont fit, like psionic or nether attacks.

I would imagine dragons are magical beings, meaning they need magic to exist (thus the laws of nature / physics breaking) and so could do generally what the hell they like with their power. However I would imagine also most would use it only for flying and attacking as it probably would come naturally to them. Fire breath attacks also should be the most common as they are nothing more than raw energy release (which causes stuff to burn) which should be easy for them to do, however smarter ones would probably have other attacks.

radiation has nothing to do with powers of dragons. Radiation can be harmful in large doses, and helpful in controlled, small doses, like chemopherapy. I don't think dragons would need magi, nessessarily, to use elements. Fire can be explained (and it was on national geographic once) with special lung like sacks in their chest, where volotile chemicals sit and wait to be used. When the dragon releases thos e gases from its mouth, the pressure sends it out as it reacts with the oxygen, and burns. The dragon wouldn't burn itself at all because its mouth is coated wiith a special surface.

Also, dragons wouldn't need magic to fly. their wingspan would depend on how large they were. For elements like ice and electricity, magic would be required. However, for nether dragons, those would have to be chaotic energies. Who says they can't make there own energy? Also, if the dragons live in an area for a long time, they wouldn't gain the elemental type. They would just evolve to suit their bodies to the enviroment. nature does it all the time.

well, yeah. I know about the electric eels, but I was focusing on the dragons. Jellyfish and eels are the only animals that can produce electricity. I don't know myself, but science has shown how they do it. The electricity doens't kill anything, but instead stuns their prey or attacker. Now, depending on the nuumber of jellyfish or eels, their electricity can be fatal. Probably the most infamous jellyfish is the man-o-war. My favorite. XD

Some say that some of the drgons species have basilisk like eyes that petrify on sight. Some dragons known as leaf dragons take the form of an tree, they have wooden looking legs and arms and theyr scale have an leafy form. And some people say an odd thing that some of drgons havn't got any wings and instead they are marsupial and can jump very high and they produce an toxic blue smoke instead of fire, for me some of the description makes me think about an kangaroo...

In m opinion there is not a very clear limit as to what dragon abilities could be. Since they originate from peoples imaginations they could easily have anything from breathing fire to being able to create and govern a world on there own(an example of this being the legend of Godith in the David Rein book series).

Seriously? That's what you come up with? We know it's from the imagination. We know that, but we ignore it. This is about the BEST abilities for dragons, not what has been used before. What makes the most sense for a dragon, and what would a dragon most likely have? And if possible, how would the dragon have that in a scientific way? Telling us that a dragon has the power to govern a world by itself is pretty boring and useless. Heck, there are probably a lot of people who dreamed of that, but it doens't work that way. One person wouldn't be able to handle every level of detail all at the same time. He can't be a mayor, governor, policeman, etc. all at the same time. Those positions all help GOVERN a place. Remember that.

Well, I (at least) enjoy having explinations for everything, and understanding an some level how things work, so my favorite kind of dragons are the ones like those in the Animal Planet show and by Naomi Novik's book series. These kinds of dragons are expained in a logical way; they have hollow bones like birds, and thier bodies have air sacks filled with light gasses to aid in flight. Some of thier powers include:

Firebreathing: This could be with flammable gasses (like methane) or some concoction of the dragon's own making that sets fire when it reacts with oxygen, hence a stream of fire. The method the dragon species uses to breath fire affects things like how long the fire burns, how far it can pe projected before burning out, and how hot it is.

Acid-or-poison breathing: Some special gland filled with highly toxic/acidic chemicals is spewed out of the dragon's mouth, burning through or poisoning it's target.

Wather breathing: A set of gills on a dragon's neck allows it to breath underwater. It can also hold water in a second stomach (like an ant's crop) and the expell the water at a later date. However, these dragons can rarely fly; they would need air sacks for that, and if their bodies were lighter than air they couldn't swim underwater (which would defeat the purpose of having gills).

Air blast: This ability is given to a rare breed of Naomi Novik's, and is a cone of sound that can shatter bones and nasty stuff like that. These dragons have specially formed lungs that can vibrate air at various freqrencies, creating the cone of sound.

Spikes: Some dragons have spikes as natural armor, making it hard for other dragons to attack them. There are some that have spiked tails, and can use this as a bludgeon on opponents.

Another fun thing about these kind of dragons is the diffrences between breeds, where diffrent breeds are bigger/smaller or more/less intelligent than others. Powers like firebreathing are hereditary, much like the D&D dragons having powers based on thier element. If you cross-breed D&D dragons, you get powerful hybrids, and the same goes for these (which I will call 'realism dragons') dragons; cross-breeding a big dragon with a middling fire breather means you get a big firebreather.

Sorry for all those posts, but the forum prevents me from having more than 1000 letters per post.

lol Crazy cow, you saw that episode by or animal planet too? XD I tried explaning it, but people didn't seem to understand. I like how you explained it. but honestly, they wouldn't need air sacks for flying. just hollow bones and wings, and the ability to jump. XD It doesn't have to be for a long time either.

Crazycow, for the water dragons, they could have sacks that take in water. Just like a submarine takes in water so it can dive, a dragon could do the same. It then releases the water to rise to the surface, and depending on how deep it wants to go, it just has to adjust the water level.

But I don't think the dragons ill have acid breath. But they can have the ability to shoot some sort of mud-like mixture at prey so they are easier to get. It happened in Jurassic park, so I know it's real. lol

Not really, considering their power the average fishing ship would not harm them.

However warships would always harm them and torpedoes would hit them nomater how deep they go.
It makes no sense to dive deeper than 500m considering almost all the food production and life occurs in the first 50m of ocean or less. 500m allows for pleanty of movement and mobility.

Why? What possible reason would they need psychcic powers for? Besides, that seems more scifi than fantasy. lol

Now, how about Deathwing? Molten dragon with armor (holding him together, sadly enough)? The wow cinematic trailer where they showed his flight around the world? Absolutely beautiful.

Actually, Deathwing already ahd a history in the lore, and at least one book. Deathwing had gone into hiding, and his dwarven army forged him armor to protect and hold his body together. Thus the new look.

Blizzard decided that they couldn't add anything to the world as it was, so they changed it. Too bad they've been nerfing things to lower levels, removing whole things like the Path of the Titans, and practically giving away event items like the Ashbear to those who want it. It's losing its epic flare.

And for Deathwing, I've seen comics (particularly Wow, eh?, Sara & Kleeyo, and Complex Actions) make him into such a wimpy or scared character, it's barely funny. No longer does the fierce, scary, earth shaking dragon exist.

And the Cataclysm menu screen! It's horrible!

I think that the best abilities for a wise and powerful dragon would be the basic Fireball, Telepathy and of course magic enchantment, something like... he turns objects into magical ones... he gives some power to a hero... he gives life into an object for a little time, depends on specific dragons.

i dont know exactly how you guys feel but i always liked the half dragon half man dragons, the ones that can sprout wings and horns and then go to a normal human. for those kinds i would say fire balls from the hands. because sometimes the human dragons look like tards when they are shoting fireballs out of their mouth XD

hmmm..for me Dragon Breath and the ability to transform into a human is pretty good.maybe a dragon circle would be cool.however i do not think radiation is not possible via magic, perhaps a magical plague.but radiation??NAH!however in WC3 blue dragons(who breathe ice, and count in my book as ice dragons) don't need magic to fly.

well, not all. I remember Shindu, the dragon in Jackie Chan Adventures (while not being in his true form) flying without wings. However, the catch was those pesky talismans he required. Those abilities would be fun. And when you look at Chinese mythology and their eastern dragons, you'll see that don't use magic but fly anyway.

ya know...it would be possible for dragons to have ghost-like abilities, a sorta ethereal dragon.although what kind a breath power such a dragon would have, i wouldn't really know.he'd probably be immune to physical weapons though.
although personally i think only dragons who don't really have Breath Powers would use their stomach acid as a weapon Dakadoon, an interesting idea though.personally IMO any dragon breath can lay waste to anything(even ice breath as blue dragons and frost wryms show us in WC3).so i wouldn't really use my stomach acid, especially since it's disgusting...eurrgh the idea makes me disgusted.
