Avatar 0.59

James Cameron's A V A T A R,
the warcraft 3 map, by Dj0z.

This map reuses the universe from the movie and the Xbox360 game, to make something unique.
Some things may vary from the original movie/game, for the sake of gameplay and/or technical reasons.
Only the introduction is predefined, how it ends will depend on how good you fight.

Story
(/!\ SPOILERS WARNING)

Pandora: In the Alpha Centauri star system, a moon called Pandora is home to an overscaled flora, fauna, and the Na'vi people.
They're a race of sentient, civilized humanoids, way less technologically advanced than humans. The fact that they live in constant harmony with nature probably kept them away from this need.

Eywa is Pandora incarnate. The Na'vi believe that Eywa's actions keep all life on Pandora in a perfect equilibrium.

R.D.A.: The human R.D.A. (Resources Development Administration) has sent a large deployment on this planet to gather the precious room-temperature supraconductor mineral called Unobtanium. It's the key to solve the energy crisis that mankind found itself in.
Because of the extremely dangerous nature of the pandorian environment, operations are under heavy military protection.

Avatar: Planning to use diplomacy in order to obtain peaceful cooperation from the Na'vi, the R.D.A. has genetically engineered hybrids of Human and Na'vi races, called the Avatars. Their external appearance is mostly Na'vi.

Roles
Gameplay changes COMPLETELY from one role to another. Play as:

  • One of the four Human R.D.A. Corporations (Corps):
Benefiting from their advanced technology, the Corps can build large and heavily defended bases providing protection from the deadly environment of Pandora.

By using their different types of factories and their spaceships, they are able to build up powerful forces with world-shattering firepower.

They apply organized military strategies, so their soldiers, mechas, vehicles, aircrafts, but also stationary weaponry and long-range artillery can eliminate any opposition, including Eywa itself.

    Dragonvstitanoriders.jpg

  • One of the four Avatars:
Taking advantage of both their human and na'vi advantages, the Avatars follow their instincts to guide them on Pandora.

Making use of plants, animals, and everything they can find including human weapons, they train their survival skills to the level where this hostile planet becomes a paradise for them.

Gathering forces from the whole environment, including the Na'vi, they eventually unite the planet in the righteous war against the human invader.

  • Eywa, the omnipresent overmind of the planet:
A true living entity worshipped as a deity by the Na'vi protects Pandora.

As the reckless Corps pillage, kill, and destroy, Eywa gets stronger and uses its planetary powers to stop them, before everything is ruined forever.

Features

  • A ton of carefully selected and exploited imports (models, icons, music etc...) provide an astounding gaming experience.

  • Alot of custom systems using vJASS, JASS, hashtables and GUI:

  • Units have alot of custom abilities and effects.

  • Advanced unit-item interactions:
    -Some units will drop their weapon (e.g. Flamethrower for Firebats) upon death, or when Disarmed by a special action;
    -You can pick up items on the ground to use them directly (like Avatars using dropped Rocket Launchers) or to change job (like Workers becoming Privates by grabbing SubMachineGuns);

    -You can mass-train workers into soldiers instantly in two clicks, with whatever type of weapon you want;
    -Soldiers can drop their weapons to become Workers, if you want to repair/build something for example;

  • Inventory systems:
    -The items a unit can use are restricted by the unit's type;
-A unit cannot have weird amounts of some items, depending on where they are held: for example an Avatar has 2 hands, so it cannot have 2 lances + 1 shield at once.

  • Exclusive custom projectile system for many units:
-For example: 30mm Autocannon users can miss depending on distance to target, and in that case their bullets can deal collateral damage.
-Projectiles like bullets can also Ministun certain types of enemies, and score Headshots on independent types of enemies.
-Projectiles like Missiles can knockback enemies where they land, deal mixed damage (siege + molecular, at once), etc...
-Some units can shoot multiple individual projectiles at once, not based off warcraft's lame multishot ability, not 1 projectile with a model that looks like multiple projectiles either.
For example, a Scorpion assault copter shooting two 30mm bullets plus two micromissiles, all behaving differently, yet all shot at the same time.

  • Riding System:
-You can make your Avatar mount an Animal. it will carry your Avatar around but they remain separate units able to perform actions individually.
For example while your ridden Toruk unit is chasing an aircraft, you can attack something else with your hero Avatar by throwing glaives, you can use your items, Persuade a unit, as if you were on the ground.

  • Custom Dollars (gold) and materials (wood) gathering systems:
-Build metal extractors for materials, then forget about them, they'll keep providing you with materials while you focus on the action. You can also space-drop some from your I.S.V. spaceship (more info about this abit below).
-Dollars (gold) is mainly obtained by exploiting Unobtanium Deposits not very fast with some workers, or dramatically faster when you manufacture dedicated vehicles that can just rip it off the ground and deliver it directly. You can also use space drops for this resource.

  • Quests for both sides, especially for Avatars, who have an RPG gameplay.

  • Mecha system (A.M.P. suits): Put your human soldiers and heroes in robots.
Each type of foot unit gets its own corresponding type of AMP (a Firebat will get a robot with a flamethrower, a Rocket Trooper will get another type of robot, that shoots rockets, etc...)

  • Spaceship drops system: obtain more personnel or resources from your I.S.V. very fast, anywhere you or any ally have built a Space Pad at.

  • Custom camera system:
-Use any zoom from "almost touching the ground" to "orbital height", abit like in Supreme Commander the actual game (except units don't become just colored icons).
-Rotate the camera in all 4 cardinal directions fast and easily by just hitting keyboard shortcuts (toggleable).

  • Avatars special stats:
-Understanding of Flora/Fauna/Na'vi/Humans: Obtained via killing, using Discover/Interact or performing special actions, they unlock new possibilites in their respective domains.
For example you can play an Avatar focusing on harassing Humans. You'll increase your Understanding in that domain by doing so, and unlock new possibilities like Breaking AMP weapons or Sabotaging Corp buildings.
Another example: you can focus on Understanding Animals and become able to Persuade increasingly strong beasts, in larger amounts, and get better items from them.

-Charisma: obtained by killing units yourself, will increase your Persuasion capability.

  • Living and dynamic environment:
    -Trees regrow from their stumps when cut down, these stumps can be destroyed forever by R.D.A. workers;
-Trees can cause special effects, like clouds of acid or mist disabling ranged attacks...
    -Animals respawn from their natural habitat, which can be destroyed forever;
-Animals have specific behaviours depending on their types, they can be captured by avatars or controlled by Eywa.

  • and much more...

Glad you like it I do my best to make it as good as possible ^^

The model for Toruk, like most others, were found here at the Hive.
The Avatar's model was made on request by a modeler, not sure u can find it in the models section. His texture was made by me, i don't think i uploaded it since it's specific to that model.
Neytiri's teture too was made by me, but this one is in the Skins section of the Hive.

As soon as i find better models for things that need them, i add them in newer version of the map, so Quaritch may get a better model later.

Thanks for the rating!

Problem: Entering -skip or skip doesn't seem to have an effect, buildings remain unavailable if the tutorial hasn't been carried out.

A different one: -camreset sets the camera to zero for some reason.

The first bug has been fixed in 0.52c, which i'll upload right now.
It was because the -skip only worked if you had not done the first quest yet, which means you needed to do -skip before building a Space Pad (and that was written nowhere).

The camera glitch is because the game checks for any number after the "-cam" word, and in that case there are no numbers, only letters.
*To reset the cam simply do "-nor" or "-normal" :)

I love this. I simply love this. The gameplay is... Perfect, almost.

There is, however, ONE little thing I'm not amused with. The only thing, by the way.

I don't quite feel in a lush forest. Couldn't you fill the map with more trees (even if only aesthetic: Like walls in wc3's campaign, although people use those models to make actual units. What I'm suggesting is the inverse... Make "usable" trees on some quantity, and lots and lots of non usable trees on most of the ground. Or you can make them all usable trees, if it does not interfere in the gameplay.)

@cleavinghammer: Oh? I'll check that out.

@MR.Tricky: Thanks.

@SasuhKun: This is something that i know about. It should be done at some point or another, i have yet to decide if all the new trees will be usable ones or if they'll just be pure aesthetic. Thank you for the feedback sir.

@Mgeterno11: I looked it up for you but didn't find it.
EDIT: Oh wait i just did. It's akin by Denu called Deep Blue.

honestly in this map I find there are many problems that take away from much of the experience for me.

First of all the Avatars are basically forced to join eywa or they're some of the weakest heroes on the map, give the players that decide to stay human some benefits too.

Another problem I had with this map was that the R.D.A seem to be incredibly weak because eywa can just spam all its incredibly overpowered abilities to repeatedly annihilate all units you have, like the locusts that you can never hit and kill infantry in a few seconds. On another note the power stone system is a decent one however there's nothing the R.D.A can do to prevent them from being captured. Maybe give them a method of possibly killing a stone or turning it off?

A last complaint I have with this map is that the R.D.A have such a low population limit for the strength of their units while the avatars/eywa can just spam animals with wild abaddon and completely overwhelm them, sure you can build defences but they mean nothing against a tide of animals stronger than your best units

I like this map however in my opinion it seriously needs to be balanced more and it needs to give Avatar players the option of staying with the humans, after all it doesn't make much sense for them to declare war on the R.D.A almost immediately if they haven't done anything and some players wouldn't want to join eywa which in the current versions you make it seem that it's the only option left open to them.

The idea of 'Avatars are basically forced to join eywa' is ok. If Avatars decided to stay with human, will we have such good movie?

Eywa's abilities are not overpower. To summon locusts, Eywa needs to control 5 powerstones. At that time the game must be ran more than 10 and few more mins. Losing few or even 12 troops is not a big matter as you can train even more troops in your barrack within 30 seconds.

RDA has low population limit is truth as ISV is powerful but not super. To stop the respam, just destroy the respamer. Use swan to kill small animals and AMP rocket troops deal with big one. Choose commander at first to have a solid power against big animals.

Avatars can't train big units but recruit, Avatars have to wait them respam and search for them after having a great battle. Yet, RDA can product swan in 20 seconds, bunch of rocket troops in 30 seconds. How much time avatars need to wait to train/recruit enough force to deal with them?

This map is well balanced as I played this map with my buddies, and Avatars won first and few more times. Yet, RDA discovered a new tactics and won at the last few times.

*** Texture below may contains disturbing scenes ***
Imagine there are 12 big locusts biting your neck at the same time, and you don't die in a few seconds?

Hello.
The question of avatars being forced to join humans has been asked many time before (purely balance reasons), but i really can't do it differently in this map.
Actually i could do it differently: having avatars start allied with Na'vis right from the start.
But that takes away from the scenario and RPG aspect of avatar gameplay. Note that i don't mind doing it this way if it keeps confusing people.

About RDA, everyone agrees that they're harder to play. However they're also strong enough to do their job. With the different tactics they got (infantry spam, early vehicles, safe artillery devastation, airlifted drops) they can strike precisely where it hurts, or overwhlem the enemy early in the game.
It is true that as the game progresses, if they don't destroy animal respawners and/or they let avatars build up huge navi bases, RDA will lose. the point for them is to have a plan to win before that happens, and to apply it. The efficiency of RDA who know what they're doing is terrifying.

Against locusts btw, use firebats, or AMP units. If you have a Dispersor (missile defense) around, locusts die instantly. There is probably one thing that needs a nerf however among eywa's spells and i'll fix that pretty soon. I'm not gonna tell what thing to avoid it being abused.

About Powerstones, consider them upgrades. Being able to deactivate them, would be like eywa being able to undo your "heavy weaponry" research that costed you time and money for a permanent advantage. It's really about doing the little things to guard some stones, if one of the RDA players is focusing on that, with his spaceship on top of eywa's head, i can hardly see what she can do about it. The only change i might do about this is adding a "An Atokirina has just been summoned!" warning message, like for "Evolution: Acid Rain" for example. You can easily guess how much that would screw up eywa i think.

Don't get me wrong, i really appreciate your well written, detailed feedback, so please tell me what you think about all that especially if you think i'm wrong on some points.

@HKO2006: Thanks for the support :) let me know if you think anything's not right.

just clarifying a few things I may have said that were unclear and stating further issues
-it's not that eywa's abilities are overly strong, it's that later ability spam is simply annoying because it can obliterate your entire army with repeated spells being thrown at you that R.D.A have no defence against
-I didn't think Avatar was a great movie myself to be honest because even our militaries we have today could win such a conflict, that and the humans in the movie happened to be lacking a great deal of intelligence. We have better weapons around today, we have better vehicles around today, the humans only had 2 ground vehicle types, and they had a giant spaceship they barely used. One quote which sums up why Avatar would go completely different if the future was realistic. "Long-distance guided missles and bombs will not exist in the future" apparently humans only have the capability of fighting when they're a few feet away from their enemies in the future?

-responding to Dj0z, I have to say that I agree with you now on all aspects of your argument but one, I did not say that avatars should be forced to remain human or anything of the sort. Also, your argument about how it would take away from the rpg and scenario aspect of the game really wouldn't be a problem if you gave Avatars that remain with the humans more things to do and maybe more skills to develop? (sure it takes away from those aspects now however you haven't implemented any system to improve those mechanics for an avatar staying with humans). The role playing and scenario would only be degraded if you continue to improve their gameplay purely on the side of eywa/Na'vi.

-locusts don't eat human flesh so no you wouldn't die, there was also no giant man-eating locusts in the movie lol

not trying to be rude or anything however I do feel that Avatars staying with the humans are only bad because you make them such by not improving upon that aspect of the game.

*** Did not tried 0.53b yet ***

Some minor issue:
-The color code of a tip about hometree did not finish.
-When I destroy my own space pad, I gain 5 human knowledge...
-Sometimes, my RDA hero gain a killeraura...

Some advices:
General:
-Respectively display tips for RDA, Avatar and Eywa
-More tips

RDA:
-Maybe a reminder "ISV's mana is full, drop something!". Something like that.
-HQ/radar can have a scaner to scan where metallic grounds are.

Avatars:
-Gain something(maybe XP/Animal knowledge) when Avatars use Discover on Animals Respawner

-Eywa's obliteration capability is being seriously nerfed in 0.54, which i already started making :) . For example there will no longer be "free" summoning, you'll need an atorkirina nearby where you wanna summon, making you take risks and making the middle of RDA bases safer.
-This one wasn't a question but i'm gonna answer still. The reason they used to justify RDA weaponry is some kind of deal that RDA has with Earth governments, who fear if RDA had all weaponry available, they could take over Earth from orbit, since they have all those spaceships and remote planets and stuff..
*Note that i personally don't care, and might aswell keep adding things like Big Berthas and MLRS, which were never possibly a part of the movie's weaponry.

-About alliances, my bad, i meant all i can do is make them start allied with Na'vis (and eywa) right from the start, but i had written "humans"...
I really have no plans to let Avatars play allied with humans, as it would require a world of updates and additions and balance testing etc.
I have no doubts it could be fun if pulled off correctly, but what i'm trying to do these days is release a 1.0 version to close beta stage and have a neat, balanced and finalized game. Such a huge change would take me too far from my objective.

*** Did not tried 0.53b yet ***

Some minor issue:
-The color code of a tip about hometree did finish.

-Yeah i had seen that ugly colorcode too, fixed in 0.53b or 0.54.
-Uhh that's odd. That would mean when playing as human. Will check.
-Yes, probably an ability ID mess that gave the Killer Aura to some unit that shouldnt have it, somewhere near RDA base. I'm still searching which one it is.

-There's already tips for Avatars. I'll add some for Eywa but so far it's not a priority, she's the easiest to understand.
-Will add more tips based on what players have the most problems with.

-Will not add mana warning, that is the player's job, and it could annoy those who are keeping it full to prepare a massive drop somewhere.
-Metallic ground detection? why not.

-Yeah Avatars will eventually be able to get something from ALL possible things you can use Interact on.

Dj0z, I think you need to upload version 0.56b ._.

Oops... Maybe I should stop translating this until there is a stable version...

Uhhh yeah probably, sorry for that but i went abit too active for a couple days. I was making massive additions to RDA units and deep changes like the tutorial quests, that brought some bugs of course, so i made again new versions to fix the bugs, etc.

I'm not updating to 0.56b yet because of how the hive workshop references updates. Avatar is currently still in the first page of the most recent maps:
If i update it now, it will not go back to top, it will simply stay where it is and people will think it's not a new version since it's in the same place as before. I have to wait for it to go to page 2 before i update here.

You can always see the true most recent changelog at our official forum, and download + play the true most recent version on our official hoster "TealHaze" on battle.net anyways.

As for stable version, it will probably be 0.57, which i am currently making, and that shouldn't bring much new stuff, primarily balance and polishing.

Found a small problem: right-clicking trees that are in the fog of war with workers causes them to -harvest- the trees, check it out.

Exactly, this glitch has been reported before. They do 1 round of actual harvesting before going back for normal deforestation.
This glitch's impact has been reduced in 0.59 (the round of harvesting was made super short) since we lacked an actual fix for that.

Thanks for reporting, and know that 0.59 will be out very soon. That's a ton of improvements since this 0.57 version, when you count 0.58's stuff (see changelogs).

EDIT: It's out! 0.59

That's a very nice description you've put together there! I'd love to try it when I get home. But, honestly the terrain seems rather dull, from what I can tell from the printscreens. Try using more evironmentals, like shrubs, flowers and such. A tip is using the "shrub" model, making it model 7 (i think, not sure), and then making it as big as possible (120) then lowering it down a bit into the ground and it will look more like grass. It actually looks rather beautiful! Here's an example of what I mean

Peace out!
