Greetings Chieftains, Dreadlords, Wardens and Mountain Kings!

Hi, I would like to ask if do you consider modding/mapmaking as an art.

A general course (Art Appreciation) I'm taking right now requires us to present an artwork of our own. With that, I would like to ask if its okay to present 'maps' for it?

I actually do consider it, modding as a whole, texturing, modelling, etc.

What I understood with art is that it is a way of expressing - there's no real criteria for it. What one perceive as art can be different from person to person.

Thank you everyone!
I await your comments and enlightenment.

I do consider modding as art and passion but that doesn't necessarily mean the professor will see it like that since it is rather unconventional and uncommon. Modelling is probably more likely to be accepted as art than mapmaking in my opinion.

Anyways, it's up to you if you want to present your maps. Perhaps the professor will be pleasantly surprised since it is rather unique. Add in how Warcraft 3 maps inspire you and stuff like that.

One time I sat down with a touch screen tablet in school and I drew an island in Sunken Ruins tileset using the tablet and the tablet pen. When we think about taking the pen and drawing an island with trees and dirt around the water like that, I think we could easily consider that to be an art form for how to do that.

But I think it is also possible that in an art class, where folks are looking to see professional work, this kind of work might be seen as "less than" others because it is re-using the trees or the dirt that another person in the past created.

In a similar way, if you were asked to show off diorama art, and you presented a leg diorama that you had created yourself using existing lego pieces, you might receive lower marks than someone who created each part of the diorama using their own sculpted pottery or something. And whether that distinction matters is probably relevant to the particular course you are taking, and not the opinion of someone like me from the internet.
