[...] Piratebay and filetube no longer seem to be working [...]

Quoting Wikipedia:
"On December 1, 2014, FilesTube [...] became a free service for streaming licensed independent movies and documentaries. As of July 2016, site redirects to viewster.com, site providing access to limited number of licensed content, including Anime and movies."

Was kinda dissapointed the thread didn't describe...

Alternative to piracy

Buying the game
nope that is not the cool

Particularly because games aren't sold in store anymore, you need an internet connection now and paypal

All of which leaves behind a paper trail.... and I have no idea why I mentioned that

Yes this site is illegal. It has very certainly no right to redistribute such software.

One may decide to pay this site's owner(s) for unlimited download speed, as well as for unlimited number of files to download. But this is not mandatory.

Sorry, this site is simply not GOG.com (which is a respectable site).

I am afraid this thread will be short-lived... :bored:

"Faster than a speeding bullet! More powerful than a locomotive! Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound!"

The first nine Superman cartoons from the early 1940s by Fleischer Studios, can be legally watched from the Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Youtube channel since a few years ago.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment

Includes:
- Superman (a.k.a. The Mad Scientist) (September 26, 1941)
- The Mechanical Monsters (November 28, 1941)
- Billion Dollar Limited (January 18, 1942)
- The Arctic Giant (February 15, 1942)
- The Bulleteers (March 22, 1942)
- The Magnetic Telescope (April 19, 1942)
- Electric Earthquake (May 17, 1942)
- Volcano (July 12, 1942)
- Terror on the Midway (August 23, 1942)

During the 1940s, a total of seventeen Superman shorts were produced. Fleischer Studios released nine cartoons in 1941 and 1942 before being taken over in May by Famous Studios, a successor company formed by Paramount, who produced eight more in 1942 and 1943.

The rights to all seventeen cartoons eventually fell into the public domain, due to National Comics failing to renew their copyrights. Nonetheless, Warner Bros., via parent Time Warner's ownership of DC Comics, owns the original film elements to the cartoons.

Well one alternative is always buying your products and researching them ahead of time to make sure they're good, that's kind of my deal. And as many others have brought up this is no place for illegal activity haven't you heard this song by Wierd Al, just think of this before you download illegal files, is it really worth it?

Maybe this can help disambiguate things. Or not:
List of countries' copyright lengths - Wikipedia
List of films in the public domain in the United States - Wikipedia

All motion pictures made and exhibited before 1923 are indisputably in the public domain in the United States.

The shareware version of popular classic video games may provide both enough entertainment and replay value, so that buying the full game feels not that mandatory after all. Coming to mind are:
- Quake 3 Arena
- Unreal Tournament

Some modern Quake source ports such as DarkPlaces can work with the data file from the shareware version of the game, thus allowing to play the first Episode without a hassle on modern PCs. The same may apply for some Doom / Doom 2 source ports. GZDoom might be a good start to check this out.

Other source ports for other video games may work with the data files provided in their shareware version.

Some mods based on now open sourced video game engines may grow into standalone games. Like The Dark Mod for example. According to the official website, it used to be a TC for Doom 3, until it became a standalone game in 2013. Meaning, Doom 3 is no longer required to install or play The Dark Mod.

If you are concerned about privacy and being tracked you might want to consider Tor proxy. It is used by militaries, intelligence services, media who need anonymity for safety as well as by crackbots who think the government is spying on them and trying to take their guns away.

Due to how it operates, it also works to get around IP blocks, both at a server level and at an ISP level. For example websites that might be blocked in the UK by law might be reachable through the service. Of course you really should not be looking up such websites.

Futuremark provides free registration keys to unlock their legacy benchmarks.
It is pointed out, these benchmarks should not be used to test modern hardware.

The keys allow to unlock the full version of:
- 3DMark06 and previous versions (down to and including 3DMark99 Max
- PCMark05 and previous versions (down to and including PCMark2002)
- Video2000

3DMark2001 does not appear in this list. I believe it has lower OS requirements than 3DMark2001 SE iirc.

what have to do with piracy?
The benchmarks listed in Futuremark's legacy section used to be commercial/shareware software.

Now, did you forget this post of yours already?
[...] That is a good point, this isn't about piracy, just about a site where free entertainment can be downloaded

Necro posting with unrelated messages seems to be a theme on the Hive.
What necro-posting? This thread was started on December 2016.

This thread is about alternatives to piracy.

Over time, many software authors provide full versions of / keys for their once commercial products.
Futuremark is free to give away any software they developed years ago, if such is their will.

Also why is this thread still open?

Why should it be closed in the first place?

(from this article on Wikipedia)

"Public Domain Day is an observance of when copyrights expire and works enter into the public domain. This legal transition of copyright works into the public domain usually happens every year on 1 January based on the individual copyright laws of each country.
[...]
As of 1 January 2010 a Public Domain Day website lists the authors whose works are entering the public domain. There are activities in countries around the world by various organizations all under the banner Public Domain Day.
[...]
Since public domain rights vary based on jurisdiction, the passage of a work into the public domain is not worldwide."

As an example: Boléro's "copyright expired on 1 May 2016 for many countries, but not worldwide. The work is public domain in Canada, China, Japan, New Zealand, South Africa, and many others where the copyright term is "Life + 50 years." It is also public domain in the EU (where the term is Life + 70 years). In the USA, the work is copyright until 1 January 2025 as this work was first published in 1929 with the prescribed copyright notice.".
(source)

It is mentioned elsewhere, Public Domain Day for Maurice Ravel's Boléro came in May 2016 for France, due to a quirk in French law. Here is the explanation: for musical pieces first published from 01/01/1921 to 12/31/1947, the copyright's term for France is not the standard 70 years starting from the author's death. It is 78 years plus 120 days. Boléro was premiered on November 1928; Maurice Ravel died on 28 December 1937.
(all the gory details, in French)

Purely informative stuff here. The survey by Irdeto does not condone piracy; and some might say for obvious reasons.

Of course, I could probably also link to other surveys which say pirates also buy afterwards some of the stuff they watched / played with, but THW's rules are clear on such subjects.

After 15 years of being a $29.95 (plus $19.95 per year after that) shareware program, the ad blocking/filtering software Ad Muncher v4 is now a completely free product since October 14th, 2014.

Works like a charm on XP SP3, and takes very little resources. But be aware, this version may not work as expected on some modern OSes / browsers. It should also not be able to block ads on HTTPS connections. Please read the Ad Muncher forums for more details.

For the record, a v5 version is in development since... well... looong. Should it be released someday, this one will obviously not be free.

The 2014 announcement:

Some interesting reads imho:

Shareware Insight: Pricing
Shareware Insight: Piracy

"[The proprietary obfuscation system named] ProHart increased the time between our releases and pirated releases to around two months, which achieved our goals and produced a new and noticeable spike in sales whenever a new version was released."
