In terms of 3d I prefer doing hard surface modeling rather than organic so buildings and maybe vehicles props etc. are fine with me Same goes for skinning..

ADMIN:

Hmmm... so no go on the orc? are you good at concept art? if so, concept us a new, good barracks.

Reaper: Yes, i'd assume he is figuring out sc2 models. The may outline is coming soon.

Reposting my previous post:

Ok, guys. This is what I want to be a FINISHED, ADVANCED, and ACTIVE project. I m concerned that the mass of joinees are NOT active enough. I understand that this is exam time, but in order for us to have a successful project, we have to have an active, skilled, and dedicated team. And aside from a few people, I’m not really seeing this, to be frank.

If you are part of the team, remember, a purge is coming into effect in 2 days. And if I detect ANYONE not being active, they will be talked to, and if they cannot be, or prove activity, they WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE ROSTER. There are a variety of reasons:

I am really not interesting in being the lead in an inactive, failing project. Not at all. The reason I made a thread in the first place is because we are a TEAM. We are WORKING on a project. Most of you wouldn’t dream of coming to your jobs intermittently. (Or school) Well I expect dedication from my team. I know it’s silly to think that you will put our project first, but if you are going to be part of the team, and call yourself members, then you have to give back to us. This is a group of people DEDICATED to our project. And anyone who can’t put in that kind of dedication, you won't be involved. Also, if you are currently doing NOTHING for the team, start asking or doing something. Don’t wait around for me to tell you what to do. Ask, or start concepting again, at school or work, you don't sit around doing nothing. I want my team busy and active, and I know the needs of the team will be obvious when we all discuss things (Hence the reason I want you guys to give me your MSN so you can join the discussion group chat, and why I am going to be posting a ‘monthly to-do list’ that will clarify the moths objectives. Just ask if you have nothing to do in the meantime, however)

I'm sorry to disappoint anyone who is interested in this project, but doesn’t have the time. But we are a team, we all share the work. I know it’s allot to expect, but I am putting much of my time into this project, and allot of effort. And when i put it up on the hive, it when from being 'my' project, to 'our' project, and therefore, we all have to put in an equal amount of time. (or at least a equal ‘value’) by joining the team, you have pledged to share the work of this project with all members. No one member should be doing more work than the others, while those who work less still receive the benefits of membership, and have pledged membership but fail to live up to the responsibility associated.

Kudos to grey, Taylor, fulla, reaper51, and real for being perfect and dedicated workers.

On another note:
Guys, things will be changing dramatically during the beta, I have almost no doubt, so try not to get too attached to our current builds, and don't be shy to try strange ideas that may not work, because they will be changed during our betas. (Most games to extensively change during betas that feature alpha build betas.)

Thanks, and I hope with this shit cleared up, our fresh revitalized team can be very productive. let’s get our game faces on, and get goin' on this stuff. Ask me what to do next or just tackle something you figure that needs to be done.

I like the idea and I would like to add my effort to this project. If you need a writer for the team, count with me. I'm good making backgrounds and tooltips. If you want proof, ask me what you want me to write and I'll do it as soon as I can.

New race

Hey Hey !

I've read the story-line and all, and I think that it's a freaking nice project. I don't want to join or anything 'cause I know I don't have the time ._. , but i started to write something about a new race to kill the time.
I know that everything is set and all, but if you could just give it a look, it would be nice.

- Basically, I thought about the Dark Iron Clan. I LOOVED to level into Searing Gorge and the Burning Steppes when I played WoW, a long time ago *caugh*. As I said, I loved the Dark Iron dwarves, with the slaves-masters and all, so I made some research on the internet, just to know the lore. I've discovered a lot of good "Important" characters than would fit well in your world so I wrote them down. It's not finished and I'm really tired XD, but I'll try to update it as fast as I can.

BTW I'm french so I'm very sorry for the mistakes and all :S
Hope you'll read it at least :p

That is easy, but i need to know what the new design of the barracks is (or if I have to make such design based on the current status of the horde, which I can do), and you want the "footie histories" to be from footmen from Theramore or the Alliance's remmnants?
And yes, I'm active.

But I can't be on forums discussing all day. Great concept btw. (sorry if my Enlish isn't to good)

TWIF I have a question for you..In terms of art style/visual looks are we aiming for cartoonish or something similar to WC3.Or somehow realistic since the new engine is capable of doing so.

here's a quick concept of the barracks..I actually have 3 variations made on my sketchpad but I don't have a scanner right now so I just made this one on PS.Please don't comment on the perspective I know its off,I'm using only a mouse that's why..I might just make the other 2 in 3d coz its less time consuming than this..

Oh hai. Sorry for taking so long to post, the weekend proved to be a long one...
Anyways, I'm also sick (in a happy way ofc, it means there IS some activity at least :D)of reading through pages and pages of chatter where it's virtually impossible to identify what are the real updates, who is working on what and how far the story has gone, as brainstorming mixes with concepts, and writing with models, and I get a headache. And when I get a headache, things get messy. Really, really messy.

On the other hand, I finally finished the intro for the Orc current situation, presented as following (I hope you like it):
As the last remnants of sunlight were slowly abandoning the valleys of Ogrimmar, Thrall, the mighty Warchief of the New Horde, was deeply immersed in thought atop of his hold. His mind had known no rest in weeks, as every day new matters were brought up to him, each one graver than the one before, every one asking for his counsel, his attention, his precious time: time that did not belong to him anymore. Of course this was not the problem, as Thrall was more than ready to give his life for his people, but in the past few months it had become apparent that the unity he had fought so fiercely to establish after the Great Battle for Theramore was more fragile than expected, as tensions were slowly building up between the once unconditional allies.

Cairne Bloodhoof, his friend and leader of the Tauren, was losing the battle to age, as his mind was growing weary and his body too weak to carry on the Totems of Wisdom for his people any longer, a duty that had to be soon passed on to his son, Baine, which was unprepared at least… unworthy at worst. The young heir had still not cooled down his hotheaded attitude, and the wisdom of his ancestors was still far from his reach, giving enough excuse for the elders of other clans to question his right to the leadership of their newly established nation, threatening to split the Tauren once again.

On the other hand, trolls were proving even more problematic, as neither time nor Vol’jin had been capable of banishing the ancient rituals of his people, bloodthirsty ceremonies to their gods, banned by the shamans as soon as they got to know of them. Mysterious disappearances had been reported again and again, of trolls and orcs disappearing in the dead of the night to never be seen again, and few (if any) proofs that they were being used as sacrifices to satisfy ancient deities. Rumors, whispers from fearful citizens were all that Thrall and his warriors could find, but everyone knew that there was something hidden in the shadows of Ogrimmar’s streets, an evil beast made up of blood and fanatism that was slowly growing, ready to devour his people from within.

Tormented by this thoughts, Thrall sighed as a gentle breeze caressed his dark hair… much to his despair, as he could not hear the voices of the wind anymore. He feared that the spirits had abandoned him, and he dared not to ask his shamans if they were facing a similar sorrow, the same loss, as he could not show any sign of weakness at times like this. He needed to be strong, a beacon for his people to follow… but as time passed, he slowly grew more and more preoccupied, hoping that with every new dawn he will once again hear the friendly crackle of the fire in the torches, the reassuring tone of the earth under his feet, the calm and steady song of the water of the rivers and the guiding whisper of the wind… But deep inside, Thrall knows that this hope was no more than a delusion, and that he had to depart as soon as possible to seek out the spirits but, once again, he had no time and there was no one capable of taking his place, of bearing the weight of leadership, no-one, except himself.

With a last glance at the darkening horizon, Thrall turned around and slowly proceeded into the darkness of his hold.

Okay, I'll think of some more ideas, but for now I'd like to have some contact info of other writers, you and Grey and (if possible) an overview post of things I should know and probably missed from the thread...

ADMIN

Guys when i started this, i wanted it to succeed, and go far, but i never imagined it would take off like this. I mean, we have a pile of members, a dedicated team, and a pile of people who admire our project. all in a week!

1. we are adding a community input setup.
2. we are reformatting the team setup and ranking/workload setup ect.

Some of these updates may not be felt for a few days, but some major changes are coming.

we are beciming organized. offical. professional. (more so) stay tuned for updates.

Fuss: good.

Masiah if you have msn pm me your info.

Brilliant Pangahas, will upload it on today's moddb news article! Sorry writers. I love it Masiah but we have yet to decide on a format for adding text to moddb, it doesn't really seem to cater well.

We tried images, but it's awkward and hard to read, we can't fit it all in the summary and news articles get rejected if there just full of text :/

Rest assured, were working on it and I'm sure TWIF will edit into the main post here.

EDIT: Yes, sorry forgot! As TWIF mentioned the new 'Community Contribution' system/thread is online and open - If you feel like helping us out but don't have much time or skill, this is for you.

Hmm i was thinking for the barracks maybe a courtyard in the corner or something? for training outdoors? just an idea. Or just a fenced area attached to the barracks with a door leading outside. and when a unit is undertraining you could have a small unit come out after some time and do some training?(that would be with the animation department.

Masiah's hero system.

10 Levels - 1 Skillpoint per Level.

5 Abilities:
3 2lvl Basic abilities - Designed to be used most as basic combat abilities (basic spells, passive abilities).
1 3lvl Core Ability - Designed to define the character as it is (Aura for a leader, spell for a mage, pet for warlock, heal for priest, w/e). If you chose this hero, it was probably because of this ability.
1 1lvl Ultimate Ability - "Run, you fools" ability. You get what I mean :D

Pff, after breaking my head on how I would do the normal mapping I actually decided to do it myself with 3DS Max and some lights ( for now )

So my very, very, very first normal map is based on Thrall's Armor Wrists, for the sign I used the LifeCraft font again, that's why it is different from the artwork.
And I tested it in PhotoShop using the nVidia filter for NormalMapping:

So do you guys think ?

The high poly model is about 12k polys

Concept :

Normal Map:

Test:

NO texture has been used just the normal map^

I've been thinking about the Proudmoore family. The eldest son, Derek, died in the second war, and the father, Daelin, died in Theramore, leaving Jaina and her younger brother Tandred, who rules over Kul Tiras. If we assume that all the Eastern Kingdoms has fallen (including Kul Tiras), Theramore would be the last sovereign land of the alliance, making anyone who rules over Theramore the official ruler of the Alliance's last city, and so of the whole alliance. This way, Jaina Proudmoore, being the last member of a noble family to rule over the alliance's sovereign land could be considered as "Queen Jaina Proudmoore I" of the state city of Theramore and all the Alliance.

Extract from the notes of Theramore's chief architect Aaron Willis.
I've studied the situation of our lands and I've come with a conclusion: We have to redesign our military architecture once again. During the first war, Stormwind's barracks were designed like giant guard houses with the purpose of guarding their villages from bandits and raiders. When the orcs arrived, they served to their purpose but the fall of Stormwind taught a lesson to the northern kingdoms, which redesigned their barracks to be more like training grounds and defensive forts, with an inner guard in the front. After the fall of the Horde and the end of the second war, the new barracks returned to be big guard houses with more living room and less fortification. Now, we're living a time of peace at Theramore, but we're not living in a kingdom with wide lands anymore, we live in an island that can barely contain the city that is built on it. We need to expand, and we've already started to move to the coasts of Kalimdor, a rough terrain with all kind of hostile creatures and an unfriendly terrain for the farmers, so the villages will surely be built around the barracks instead of the town halls due to the need of protection. So I've decided to give the new barracks some features more characteristic from a castle.
First of all, the building will be divided in two parts: The "main building" and the "wall". The wall will surround the main building and will count with four towers, one in each corner. The wall will be connected internally with the main building through the back part of the first floor to prevent assaulters with ladders to acces easily the main building.
The wall will count with two floors connected by stairs easily destructible in every tower. The first and second floors of the towers will be armories with weapons, rifles, gunpowder, bullets and arrows stored, while the inner corridors of the walls will be easily defendible ways wich force any attacker to go through them to the back of the building if they intend to enter the main building.
The main building will count with three floors, one more than our current barracks, and a basement. The basement will be designed as a refuge where the peasants can hide if the village is attacked instead of as a prision. In the first floor will be the soldier's dependences and the common room. Basically, there will be where the inhabitants of the barracks will do their daily life. The second floor will be where the officers' dependances and the strategy room will be. Also, there will be a private office for the top military officer at the village. From the second floor you can access a balcony that gives the officers a vision of half of the territory around the barracks. The access to the balcony will be a series of archways easily destructible with explosives, preventing assaulters to enter directly the second floor with ladders.
I have also considered our territorial situation: The only way to deliver resources from Theramore to the coastal villages is thorugh ship, a method much more dependant from the climatic changes than land transport, so I've added a third floor that can be used as storage, allowing a garrison to survive much more time without help from Theramore.

Also, here's a tooltip for the Barracks:
"Build Barracks"
"Barracks are the basic military unit producing building of the Alliance. It's a tough building that can garrison any infantry unit. If the garrisoned units are [alliance infantry ranged unit name here], the barracks gain the ability to attack."

I'm going to write a short history about the footies that survived their exploring expedition wich found a "Void Rift" that absorbed the wizard of the expedition and summoned demons wich killed the rest of their compaions.

WiP

K - I know I've been a bit inactive in this project, sorry I've been caught up with different things and its AP testing week at school. Atm this is just a bit of percussion and trombone parts - I'm going to add a lot more - just want to give you some proof that I am actually working on this stuff.

This is my first attempt at Blizz style - I don't think I nailed it exactly but I'm definitely open to suggestions.

Since the Theramorian campaign will surely take place at Kalimdor, I've came up with a new design of footman much more fit to fight in a desert and much more trained, something like the footmen of Warcraft II, but lighter.

While the typical alliance footman is a farmer with an armor, shield, sword and basic training in combat and formations, the footmen from Theramore are the heirs of the same soldiers that fought and survived the march through the harshest regions of Kalimdor and the battle against the burning legion at mount Hyjal.
While the footmen that composed the front lines of the alliance in the third war were equipped with full armors, heavy shields and one handed swords, the climatic conditions of the southern half of Kalimdor transforms said equipment into a pot.
The first man who noticed the need for a change in the troops of Jaina Proudmoore's expedition if they intended to stablish a presence in Kalimdor was captain Rein Goodwood. Lady Proudmoore coincided with Goodwood and charged him with the responsibility of finding a solution to the problem. When their expedition fought with the orcs who were searching for the oracle, the captain found the solution to their problems. Even through their footmen were much better equipped, the orc grunts were toughter and stronger, and their lack of armor allowed them more mobility while preventing the soffocation caused by the excessive warm of the kalimdor desert. If he could manage to find a way to unite the characteristics of an orcish warrior with these of an allied knight, he could give birth to a new kind of soldier much more versatile. After the events at the oracle's cave and the fight to get back Grom Hellscream's sanity, Goodwood and a few volunteers got permission from the orc warchief to join a group of orc grunts. Soon after that, Goodwood and his men were called back to the alliance ranks for the defense of mount Hyjal. Some months after the defeat of Archimonde, Goodwood joined the orcs again at orgrimmar, having to escape to the desert during the events that High Admiral Daelin Proudmoore triggered at Theramore. In the desert, Goodwood realized that he had no need to learn from the orcs. If he wanted soldiers that could live and fight in the desert, the desert should be their teacher.
When Lady Proudmoore ruled once again Theramore island, Goodwood returned and reported his ideas to lady Jaina, who gave him permission to take a group of recruits and train and equip them as he deemed necessary. The soldiers trained personally by Goodwood proved to be much more capable than the old footmen at the desert. While the veteran soldiers keep their old equipment and are in charge of the defense of Theramore, the new recruits are trained with the program designed by Goodwood and are slowly replacing the footmen at Kalimdor.
Rein Goodwood was promoted to general and is currently in charge of the exploration of the southern lands of Kalimdor.
The new recruits of Theramore are given a much lighter armor that offers lesser protection but enchances movility in exchange, with cloth tabards and pieces of cloth of light colors that help prevent sunburn and the excessive warming of the metal pieces. Also, most of the soldiers add a piece of cloth around their hair and forehead under the helmet. The influence of the orc culture in the theramorian military can be seen in the new weapons of the footmen, removing the shield in favor of a longer sword that can be held with one or both hand like the orcish grunts' axes.
The new recruits of the theramorian army are divided in groups of ten to fifteen recruits leaded by a sergeant. During the first month, the groups go through an intensive physical training consisting of march and exercise. After that time, the recruits are given old alliance armors and ordered to march during the whole day. Even through it's not a rule, usually the seargeants in charge of the groups carry the armors too to encourage the recruits. Any recruit that can't pass the test is sent to a new recruit group and, if more than four members of the group can't pass the test, the entire group start again with the physical training. Most of the groups can't pass the test until their second or third month.
After the group have passed the test, they're given their true armors, wich they will carry at all times during the rest of their training. During three months the new recruits are taught basic swordmanship, formations and some bare-handed fighting techniques.
After that basic training is completed, the groups are sent to different parts of the kalimdor deserts, where they must survive for another two months. During that time, the sergeants have permission to use whatever methot the deem necessary to teach the recruits the secrets of surviving in the desert. Some sergeants abandon the camp at night and watch their groups from the distance so they learn by themselves, others bring their groups to tauren encampments where they can learn from the natives of Kalimdor.
After the recruits return to Theramore, the marks of Theramore and the alliance are engraved in their armors before they can clean themselves. After the engraving, the recruits form in front of their sergeats, who tell them a variation of an orc saying*: "As we taught you how to be soldiers, the desert taught you how to be warriors. Now you can be trusted with the duty of protecting the alliance. Now you're footmen of Theramore."
After that ceremony, the footmen are given a break of two weeks and then they're assigned to their destinations in the island city or the coastal villages.

*The orc version for the new grunts is: "We have made fighters of you, while the spirits have transformed you into warriors. Now you can be trusted in battle. Now you can fight for the horde."
