You should not really be using so many in the first place. Consider writing triggers to spawn units only when players are nearby.

The reason for this is to improve map performance. Even if the units sit around idle doing nothing 99.9% of the time they still add overhead to various map systems slowing down the overall operation of some procedures.

If you really must pre-place so many, consider hiding all units in areas not immediately accessible to players. Hidden units are removed from various map systems reducing their overhead. You can always unhide them when players approach (or enter the area).

I agree with DSG here. You should not have to pre-place that many units, unless you are doing some kind of big ORPG and even then most of your buildings will be doodads anyway.

If you are placing creeps to populate areas/dungeons you may wish to consider using a creep spawning system instead.
