In case anyone else has this problem--the editor opens a new blank map when you open it that is set to "Lordaeron Summer". That's why the texture ends up preloaded, and that is why it ends up not showing up properly. But it should show up just fine in wc3.
It also happens when you open up any map that uses a tile you have, and then switching to the other map. If that is the case, then you can just restart the editor and open your map first.
Also, I think there is a setting that will prevent WE from opening a new map on startup.
Some texture assets just are preloaded so cannot be overwritten with import. For example it is impossible to change the necropolis (all upgrades) skin.
