[SOLVED][Linux Mint] Warcraft 3 Reforged not launching (using Battle.net with Steam)

Hello everyone. I'm making this thread since I searched everywhere on this forum for this specific issue but nothing seemed to work.

A friend of mine has a problem with running Warcraft 3 Reforged through Battle.net installed with Steam.

Here are the steps for the installation process (I'll mention the fact that I did this too but everything worked fine for me) :

ALL OF THIS WAS DONE IN THE FILE SYSTEM HDD, NOT ON A SECONDARY HDD

  1. Downloaded the Battle.net-Setup.exe in /home/hisusername/Downloads
  2. Added the .exe in Steam as a "Non-Steam Game" -> Properties -> Compatibility -> Selected GE-Proton10-34 -> Launched the setup with this custom Proton (which he got from ProtonUp-Qt) (I'll also mention the fact that he didn't tinker with anything from the "Shortcut" tab from Properties)
  3. When the Battle.net Installation tab got prompted, he didn't change the install location (the default being C:/Program Files(x86)/Battle.net)
  4. After the client got installed and opened as it should, he closed it by selecting "Exit application"
  5. Went to Steam -> selected Battle.net-Setup.exe from Library -> Properties -> Shortcut -> Changed the "Target" and "Start in" to the path where Battle.net installed
    Target - "/home/hisusername/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/4121679098/pfx/dosdevices/c:/Program Files (x86)/Battle.net/Battle.net Launcher.exe"
    Start in - /home/hisusername/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/4121679098/pfx/dosdevices/c:/Program Files (x86)/Battle.net/
  6. Renamed Battle.net-Setup.exe to Battle.net (from Steam)
  7. Opened Battle.net through Steam (with the same Proton : GE-Proton10-34) -> Install Warcraft 3 Reforged in the same directory Battle.net installed :
    /home/hisusername/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/4121679098/pfx/dosdevices/c:/Program Files (x86)
  8. When he launched the game (obviously through Battle.net) only a black screen appeared (and it wasn't even in fullscreen) while the sound worked
He changed to a bunch of other Protons like : Experimental, Hotfix, 9.0-4, 8.0-5, 10.0-4, GE-Proton10-32, GE-Proton10-30 but nothing fixed this issue.

Here's some general information about his system:

Thanks for reading this and hopefully there's a fix.

Subscribing because I would also like to know the answer for this. I've tended to believe that given how Wine worked almost perfectly for Warcraft III from the year 2012 until 2019, I've operated with the assumption that rebuilding the game with Chrome and a React UI embedded was a ludicrous decision that might have been an intentional way to make the game's code so convoluted that it wouldn't run on Linux anymore.

Because I have a difficult time coordinating to actually play this game socially, now that I moved to Linux computers for several years my solution for playing Warcraft III has been to use my open source rewrite of the game (better fits Linux philosophy anyway). However this is not feature complete, and then friends tell me to play Reforged like the situation your friend is in, and then last time I had this problem you are describing -- and this is not a joke -- I walked down the street to a vendor that I found in an internet search and bought a Windows computer for some extra cash and then I brought it back and plugged it in and played Reforged with my friend.

And then when I was done I tossed the computer.

I think this is really seriously how they want you to solve the problem and I think Microsoft is likely to increase the extent to which they want that to be how you solve the problem as time goes on. But I hope that I am incorrect, and that someone else responds with a better solution, because admittedly buying a Windows box to play Reforged with my friend that day and then trashing it was obviously a very entitled thing that I was only able to do because I have been momentarily fortunate and financially stable at this exact moment in time in my life.

Hey, I'm the friend in question. I managed to get it working by launching Battle.net via Steam with Proton GE 10-3. The issue was, from what I gather, the game launching in Windowed Fullscreen instead or Fullscreen. I changed it in the War3Preferences.txt file in Documents/Warcraft III. This also expains why, after importing my documents file from Windows (where i used Windowed Fullscreen), the game stopped working.

Anyway, there is still an issue that I feel should be fixed. This method, while giving me a functional Warcraft III game, leaves the Editor being lackluster, in the sense that the terrain and boxes on the left "flicker" every time I move the camera. I also tried normal Proton 10 again, since that's what my friend is using and has got it to work with no such issues. However, Proton 10,0-4 didn't fix the Editor and the game only runs once, then goes back to a persistent black screen with sound.

Hello once again and sorry for double posting. I got the World Editor to work flawlessly with one simple trick. I installed an older version of Warcraft III reforged, copied the "World Editor Launcher.exe" file from there, pasted it in the /Program Files (x86)/Warcraft III folder, where i have my retail version of Warcraft III installed. I then run the launcher with Wine and the flicker is gone. Also, I should mention that there is no black bar where the tray containing the object editor, campaign editor etc is.
This method has the launcher start the retail version of the World Editor (I know this because it can open a file from the latest version of the editor, whilst if I just started the launcher in the folder containing the older version, it could not open said file).

Update: The game gives a blackscreen with sound most of the time when booting it up. The solution for me was reducing the maximum framerate from 100 FPS to 60 FPS. This doesn't fix the initial blackscreen, however, after tabbing out and back in a couple of times, the blackscreen turns into the game's visuals anr afterwards, the game runs fine.
