Winsat Formal, Increase Computer Performance?

Status
Not open for further replies.
I kept getting errors in the Windows Experience Index so I ran a 'winsat formal' in command prompt and it returned these values:

Winsat.png

Now I understand my scores are good, but I want to increase my "Disk data transfer rate" substantially if it is possible.

The base score represents the minimum performance of your system, based on the capabilities of different parts of your computer, including random access memory (RAM), central processing unit (CPU), hard disk, general graphics performance on the desktop, and 3‑D graphics capability.

Here are general descriptions of the experience you can expect from a computer that receives the following base scores:

A computer with a base score of 1.0 or 2.0 usually has sufficient performance to do general computing tasks, such as run office productivity programs and search the Internet. However, a computer with this base score is generally not powerful enough to run Aero, or the advanced multimedia experiences that are available with Windows 7.

A computer with a base score of 3.0 can run Aero and many features of Windows 7 at a basic level. Some of the Windows 7 advanced features might not have all of their functionality available. For example, a computer with a base score of 3.0 can display the Windows 7 theme at a resolution of 1280 × 1024, but might struggle to run the theme on multiple monitors. Or, it can play digital TV content but might struggle to play high-definition television (HDTV) content.

A computer with a base score of 4.0 or 5.0 can run new features of Windows 7, and it can support running multiple programs at the same time.

A computer with a base score of 6.0 or 7.0 has a faster hard disk, and can support high-end, graphics-intensive experiences, such as multiplayer and 3‑D gaming and recording and playback of HDTV content.

If a particular program or Windows 7 experience requires a higher score than your base score, you can upgrade your hardware to meet the necessary base score. If you install new hardware and want to see if your score has changed, click Re-run the assessment. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. To view details about the hardware on your computer, click View and print details.

I already know that to increase "Calculations per second" I will need a better processor, but one step at a time.

My question to you all is can I increase my transfer rate? I want to get my lowest score up.

I'll attach a dxdiag to a hidden at the bottom of the post.

Also all my drivers for everything I can think of have been updated. I'm going to do a massive overhaul of updates to my Windows 7 shortly, but the last time I tried that my computer's performance went heavily down. It came to a point where I wasn't getting anymore than 20 fps in WoW when I usually sit at the max; 60.1. Since then I've purchased a new GPU and power supply, but I fear that if I update everything it will go down again.

My hard disk space is amazingly large, so I can't see that being an issue.
Is it simply because my hard disk is old? Not up to date with current technology?
Or does it somehow tie into my processing power? It would make sense that if my processor was slow than my computer is finding it difficult to move things around quickly.
But there must be something I can do.

Thanks ahead of time for any assistance.

The Disk Data Transfer Rate field is stupidly difficult to fufill. Almost every system with a newish mechanical hard disk will get a 5.9. The only way I imagine it is possible to get values above 5.9 is via using Raid 0 arrays of mechanical drives or using a good Solid State Drive. This value is unimportant and will only effect game load times.

Updating Windows 7 will not degrade performance. WoW running at 20 FPS must have been due to some other reason (like updates were still installing). Why not just turn on automatic updates and let it update all the time, that is what most people do with permanent internet.

Interesting. I will certainly start automatic updates.
As for what caused the loss of FPS I have absolutely no idea.
When such things happen I usually open the task manager and close all non-essential processes.
I did that the time it lagged, but to no success.

Anyways thank you for your help, DSG.
As always, in your debt :3
