SOLVED

So I've googled my arse off looking for a solution to my problem, and I havn't found a single one that is effective yet. So here I am, pleading to the THW forums. Here's my issue:

I bought my computer at the end of July(?) with Windows 7 and it was working perfectly (i'll post computer specs at the end of the thread). I was happy with my $800 Costco PC; it ran WoW excellently, with awesome HD (my 1980x1080 monitor, I believe it is) and all was good.

About a month ago, however, it started freezing. At first it was only World of Warcraft that would lock up, and cause me to get mad enough to rip arm hairs out waiting for it to unfreeze.

I ran World of Warcraft Repair and it said that "there is a serious issue with your World of Wacraft client. Please reinstall", then closed. I did as it said, and all was good for about a day, then the problems reoccurred. I realize now that the Repair wizard probably said that because I was doing things to my data that the average WoW player won't do, but let's not go there (*cough*privateservers*cough*programmer'sisland*cough).

Anyways it seemd to be only WoW that was doing it to me. But when I quit WoW for SC2 at the end of July, about a week into gaming, it started doing it again. I figured it was cause of graphics; seeing as how SC2 is new-age stuff and my Graphics card is a P.O.S.

This leads back to my earlier threads asking the people of THW what I should do to improve my graphics, costs of graphics cards, etc. However I recently downloaded Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, and that's when the metaphorical shit really started to hit the metaphorical fan.

It was freezing.. all the time. Like I mean everytime I click on a button it locks up for a good 30-60 seconds, sometimes indefinitely.

So I did what every other nerd on the planet does who has no idea wtf is going on; I googled. After an hour or so of research I came to the realization that a lot of other W7 users are having similar problems.

The websites provided a mixed set of answers and resolutions to my problem. Some said it could be my Driver is out of date, so I went to the NVIDIA website and updated that. Next I did 13 or so Windows updates, and completed all of that, but the issue didn't go away. The last website I went to recommended that I use a registry cleaner device, so I found one online for free, and cleared out my 400+ registry errors.

However this seems to have just made the issue worse. Now I can't even open StarCraft II, it simply freezes on the log-in screen. The problem was a bit of a hassle before, and it generally pointed to my graphics card to being the main issue (I'm trying to save up money to buy a new one, but they aren't cheap). It has, however, gone from a hassle to a serious issue.

This is simply ridiculous. I need my StarCraft II. I can't even get my WC3 to run, either. I'm gameless, and so here I am asking for help. If any of you have any suggestions or recommendations I would be more than pleased to hear it, even if it's just an assumption or guess. Anything at this point will help me.

Edit: Apologies for the necro, but I wanted to update incase anybody needs a fix to this problem.
Turns out my CPU was tuning itself down because of over-heating issues.
I put a little fan in behind my computer and keep it on when I game.
Unless I'm doing something very strenuous it usually keeps it from freezing.
Thanks for the help everyone.

Freezing usually occurs when a game is waiting for something.

For example WC3 freezes if a unit is placed onto the map that has not been preloaded. The freeze is to allow for the game to remain in sync while the model is loaded from hard disk.

Likewise, if you run out of memory or suffer too many page faults the game will be paused while your computer pages virtual memory in and out of the working set.

Games will also freeze if they have to perform a computationally intensive immediate task. Spawning 200 zerglings at the exact same location in SC2 will cause this.

We can rule out pageing of virtual memory because, unless you are running something memory hungy in the background, your 4 GB of memory is more than enough to run all modern games flawlessly.

Additionally, I doubt it is because the games are running something computationally intensive unless you are running the game on ultra (which your graphic card would say no to).

This leaves me with 2 possible causes. The first is that your hard disk iis the cause. If it is suffering from mechanical failure or from high fragmentation it can slow access times and thus cause delays everytime something is loaded from hard disk. I seriously doubt it sounds like a mechanical problem with the hard disk as that would affect the OS as well. Thus it leaves me with 2 tasks for you to try. A disk error check and repair (to make sure there is no damage to the disk (this will take some time, so be patient). Then a disk defragment which clusters data into 64 MB chunks instead of leaving individual sectors lieing around (hammering read speed).

The other possible problem I noticed...
Dedicated Memory: 239 MB
Current Mode: 1920 x 1080 (32 bit) (60Hz)

You are running a card with only 256 MB of dedicated memory at full HD. Modern games require huge ammounts of dedicated memory to run at HD and can really hammer performance if they run out. This eithor results in a crash, or it resorts to shared memory which hammers the interface with the card and to the processor causing a huge drop in performance. What could be happening is it runs out of graphics memory at times (depends on game but button clicks logically cause change) causing it to shuffle a vast amount of data between main system memory and the graphic card. The end result is the system hangs as no frames can be rendered until each piece of data is present in the graphic memory (even if it means moving between main memory and card every frame which is extreemly slow). The soultion to this is to eithor upgrade your card, lower texture detail levels (to conserve graphic memory) or to play at a lower resolution (try 1680*1050 or smaller to see if there is any difference).

Finnally, unexplained crashes, errors and slowdowns can be caused by memory problems. Apparently windows vista (and 7 I guess as it extended vista) came with a memory diagnostic tool which you basically run at start up and let it run for a few hours doing various memory interaction tests. I advise running it overnight and seeing if there are any errors.

So a list of possible fixes...
Check disk for errors and repair any with the OS disk check application W7 comes with.
Defragment the disks using the disk defragmentor that W7 comes with.
Try running the game at a lower resolution or at lower graphical settings to consume less graphic memory.
Test your memory if there are any errors in it that may only become visible under stress conditions (like playing a game).

Thank you, this helps.
The only other thing it freezes on is youtube, but again, I assume it has to do with dedicated memory. I'll run the disk check application you mentioned overnight tonight.
Again, Dr Super Good comes to the rescue. I couldn't find an intelligent answer like that on any of the sites I went on to.
Also, I'm assuming dedicated memory has to do with quote "P.O.S" memory card I have?

On a positive note earlier today I went fudging through the SC2 settings, and set the screen resolution to a recommended size (1080x780 I believe) and noticed an immediate improvement. Though there is a very small bit of detail lost in general gaming (such as smaller words, less detailed login screen, etc) it has helped a lot.
With this screen resolution fix I was even able to change the Shaders option to Medium, and wow what a difference it has made on the game itself. With shaders active, it is a tiny bit laggy, but not anywhere near what it was before. A small price to pay for sexy graphics. Also note I went into the NVIDIA Control Panel and set the graphics card to Performance instead of Quality. This seems to have helped a bit.

As I said I'm trying to work on getting myself a better graphics card, and a new CPU if possible (but again, cost is an issue) considering I noticed using the tskmngr.exe (windows task manager, accessed through cntrl alt del) that SC2 eats up 50%+ my CPU when not in a game (general log-in screen, not performing too much) and when I run a replay, it can eat up 80-90%+ the CPU. I've tried to close explorer.exe (the desktop, start button, desktop background icons, are all managed by explorer) and other programs that I've noticed to be useless such as an iTunes starter helper (or some stupid BS) before, but with these changes I don't think I'll have to.

Anyways again THANK YOU for this information. If I hadn't given you +Rep beforehand in another thread, I would do so again here. Please note I will come back to this thread in a day or so (I usually give out +Rep to things I find helpful) and make sure you get the Rep you deserve for such an in-depth assistance to my issue.

You are truly a computer god, DrSuperGood =]

A clear pointer for lack of graphic memory or atleast a problem with it. Same with the youtube stutter (can not get frames to the graphic card fast enough).

This is why all gaming cards will come with a minimum of 700 MB dedicated RAM nowdays (most are 1GB+ now).

The processor consumtion is normal. 1 core will be expending all time rendering frames as fast as possible (yes, although the graphic card makes the visuals there still is a lot of CPU work per frame) especially if you have not forced a frame cap (SC2 does not have one by default). The other core will be more dedictated towards running the game engine itself (thus it nears maximum usage ingame).

He is well aware of that, he just did not know what was causing the random stuttering which, I agree, is rather hard to identify. For example if his hard drive was the cause (can not read well from it anymore in that case) he would need a new one of those rather than a new graphic card.

The main problem with upgrading is his graphic card is probably not the only thing the manufacturers skimped on (or where there is not enough room to expand). It is likely that his PSU is not up to the job of a larger load and equally likly that he may not have PCI-E 2.0 (which is vital for the best performance of modern cards).

If it was a pre manufactured PC from a major vender, I am suprized they provided it with such a high resolution screen, it is quite clear that it would have problems with that resolution and that card outside of maybe playing DVDs and surfing basic websites or folders. Like he said even youtube overloads its memory bandwith at native resolution (which is not all too difficult due to the poor optomizations of flash).

Well I ran the refrag and disk check programs, and so far I havn't seen any issue now (although I havn't been able to play much, I've had a lot of stuff to do recently, what with my new job that's an hour commute away).
Again, thank you for the help DrSuperGood. I never would have thought to defrag, and the websites never mentioned anything like that. I've been saving up and through research I've come to the conclusion that a NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX will cost about $139.99, plus tax and installation ($30-$40). It will come to roughly $200 (maybe a little less). I've been putting all my money aside, and what with Christmas coming up, I should be able to afford one within the next few months.
Thanks again =]

I at one point had a freezing problem.

It was caused by my mouse.

I now check all usb devices to see if they cause the problem.

It was on W7, a 5 year old mouse, however, i now have a i can "fuck people up with".

My point is, check small things before you go ahead and wipe your computer twice, and buy a new X, Y and Z. That was a horrible month

Unless I'm doing something very strenuous it usually keeps it from freezing.
Thanks for the help everyone.

Edit: Also I opened up my computer case and there was dust in the fan. It reduced my cooling down to 50% at least.
Now if I'm not playing games I generally don't even need the little fan.
Just thought you all may want to know.
