Dawn of War: Winter Assault

Details:
Basically, I am an experienced Dawn of War player. Online, I don't find it terribly difficult to tread some water. So, I wanted to see if the AI had much to offer. Of course I practice on Skirmish mode, usually I win... but I wanted to jack up their difficulty a bit, see how I'd do. This is basically what happened...

Chapter 1:
Title: Menu of Doom
Status: Alive/Eager

MenuScreeen.jpg

Alright. This is the menu screen, I'm playing as the Imperial Guard. My enemies are playing as the Orks, Chaos Space Marines, and Space Marines. If you look to the options menu to the right of the players menu, you will see that the AI is set to maximum. Now, it's time to start up the game.

Chapter 2:
Title: Not dead yet...
Status: Alive/Uneasy

notdeadyet.jpg

Now the construction of the miniluv has just started. I've ordered my first enginseer to build me some generators. Now I'm not exactly sure what will happen next, that's why I'm uneasy. I'm thinking "Maybe there's going to be some massive rush or something. I'll just die on the spot." But really there's nothing to worry about. I'll just expand, and see what happens.

Chapter 3:
Title: Spreading the butter
Status: Alive/Patriotic

expansion.jpg

Now I'm using my infantry squads to capture the nearby strategic areas. Soon I'll have quite the tycoon going. For now, I'm just kind of sitting here, waiting for stuff to get built.

Chapter 4:
Title: First Real Battle
Status: Battling/Winning

firstrealbattle.jpg

Now I've just been shot by some Hellfire Dreadnoughts. Poopy. Well my army is sufficient, now I'll have to keep on steady and upgrade their weaponry and unit amounts while my enemy pours out flak. I have equipped my squads with Commisars as to increase their moral. Hopefully nothing will go wrong. By wrong, I mean I hope I won't die. They seem to only be sending vehicles... strange.

firstrealbattle2.jpg

Alright, there were about 4 of them. I seemed to destroy them with ease. The battle lasted about 2 minutes in total. I'm confident now that I can destroy them. Btw, news on the screen says Player Defeated, it must've been the Chaos. I haven't seen them the entire time I've been building and battling.

Chapter 5:
Title: Deathrow
Status: Battling/Getting Slaughtered

deathrow.jpg

In an instant, the army that has literally destroyed the other players has come to me. Last but not least, I guess you could say. It came full force, and it mowed down my infantry in seconds. I know why now, all of their space marines were equipped with heavy blasters, heavy machine guns, what have you. They just chopped down my infantry, all of my commisars, all of my heroes, all of my walkers, even. All I have left are a couple of squads shooting their grenade launchers. I felt a bit pitiful watching a mere 5 or 6 grenades cascading down at the enemy, as their were originally 3 or 4x that many soldiers with that equipment. If you look at the mini-map, the screen was taken a little late. My soldiers are already dead. And their giant red blob of death is still standing, I managed to take out a couple of those b-tards though.

Chapter 6:
Title: All hope is lost
Status: Perishing/Hopeless

allhopeislost.jpg

I know now that there is no hope. They have charged up the hill, slaughtered my entire army of mechanized vehicles and basic infantry units. Now I feel a little bit more relaxed though, knowing that I don't have to try and fight back. I can just sit back and watch, as the remainder of my armies are torn to shreds by bullets, mechanized arms, tank shells, rockets, artillery, or giant hammers.

Chapter 7:
Title: Time of Death: 18:36
Status: Dead/Eager

deathlypose.jpg

Alright. Dead. I was completely eradicated in 18 minutes and 36 seconds. Wow. That was fun :)! I'm confident that I could win if I corrected some of my mistakes... like, for instance, not get an army extremely pone to heavy machine gun fire -.-

TheMist.jpg

You can see here just how vast their army really was. All they had were Space Marines and Land Speeders, suprisingly. But they had so many it was impossible for my Imperial Guardsmen to take them out. Next time, though, I will make sure to get a full force of vehicles before I am attacked by the super army of domination and fornific-nevermind. Well thanks for reading, hope you guys can post some good feedback.

Btw, from this point of view you can see most of my army... they're a little tired at the moment, I'm sure they'll get up - oh no, they're dead. Well, it was a good game. I recommend these settings for anyone that likes to get dominated.

You bastard! I managed to set everything up and you leave...

In WA is almost impossible to win the skirmish from hard difficulty and above unless they get stuck like in my case. However there is other more certain way, you need to rush the comp immediately, but this makes the game no more that fun as you employ only basic stuff. Thats why I like to play rather DC and SS skirmishes (SS AI actually sucks, but fortunately there is AI mod to improve it). But in WA I really like that you can mass Leman russes and ditch guardsmen in high tiers as you aren't limited with karsrkin and ogryn to 1.

Actually I would be very suprised if you won, I was already afraid you are an uber pro :p

I don't know about WA (since it seems to me and my friends that they forgot to balance it after the first game, so we just play DoW basically), but the original, insane's a bit of a push over really; unless the AI massively cheats in WA (such as treating it as a 3v1), I can't see it being that much harder (I recently won insane 1v1v1v1 on DoW without much trouble).

Although tbh, Imperial Guard do totally suck I believe.

Actually, it's true that WA has the hardest AI of any of the expansions, and they do play it like 3v1. Though I have gotten better since this, I am actually able to take much more of a force. But, I must disagree with you on the Imperial Guard front... they are actually quite good when in the hands of an experienced player. They can be quite annoying, especially to the Space Marines and Chaos Space Marines as their hellhounds can burn through entire infantry squads in seconds... but their infantry are quite a disadvantage, they have to be in higher tiers to be able to put up any sort of a defense against the other races.

It is Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War
Winter Assault is an expansion pack
There are several expansion packs...
If you're interested, you should check out the website for the sequal, dawn of war 2:
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II

Some Game Info:
-If you purchase the original game and it's expansions there are a total of: 9 Races
-Including: Space Marines (cool white guys that tore me apart), Chaos Space Marines (Heretics that can summon demons to aid them), Eldar (Elf-like futuristic race), Orks (Futuristic orks specializing in brutality), Imperial Guard (my guys), Tau (Super-intelligent space travelers), Necrons (Robotic undead), Sisters of Battle (Holy zealots), Dark Eldar (Special race. They have abilities that can be casted anywhere in the map).
-You may paint your soldiers as you like. It is based off of a table-top board game, so it has no team-color. Instead, you paint your soldiers and vehicles, name their scheme, and then play with them online or against a computer.
-I recommend it, it is an unbeliavably sweet-tastic game.

I'm going to have to turn into a lorefag/nerd, and say Space Marines' skin colour depends on their chapter. Salamanders for example are black, Ultramarines are white and Raven Guard are albino white. And before anyone says it, the Necron DO NOT raise other races from the dead. While this is said in the Soulstorm Campaign it was a missconception by the makers. In truth the Necrons don't increase their numbers by raising the dead.

The only way the Necrons convert more into their forces is by abducting humans with the Pariah gene (these people have no soul so Psykers have no effect on them. They're pretty much anti-psykers) and put them into bodies of living metal, a metal that the Necrontyr (Necrons when they were still alive) invented.

haha... right.

I said robotic undead, I understand that they were super-intelligent and then they went in to the caves and slept for a very long time, woke up, had the munchies, and went out and tried to kill everybody. But thanks for pointing that out, that's pretty interesting.

That is I guess.

Well the Imperial Guard is certainly not for new players. They suck in tier 1, especially when without grenades yet, your soldiers can't fight. You must rely heavily on your command squad, even only in 3 they can beat every other commander in tier 1. In T2 is much better, especially because of hellhounds, which in more numbers can make short work of all infantry. You have also 2 anti-vehicle units, but they are cumbersome (heavy weapons) or fragile (sentinel), but combined with curse of machine spirit they stop vehicle rushes. Long range artillery in T2 is good too. In T3 IG becomes weak again, since all you got is those advanced infantry squads, but you are limited to only 1 each, which greatly reduces their usefulness. Their flyer in SS is still buggy and it does too low damage. And the main problem is that all 3 newly acquired units are good only vs infantry. In T4 the things get little better with heavy tanks.

Yes, IG in tier 4 is almost unstoppable. That's the best reason to play as them, you memorize the steps in which to get to the final tier the quickest, and then you exploit it. The baneblade crushes enemy vehicles, kaskrins take care of heroes and infantry, and leman russ are the best vehicle in the game other then ultis. That's why I like to play as the IG.

And, it is not yet known whether all of the races will be in the next one. Probably not, though.

Haha I checked out that website you linked, it looks awesome. It says Eldar is gonna be in it and it there was a picture of the white team but in red, the space marines I think.

Just throwing it out there, but the space marines are the team I play in WH 40k TD lol :p

The races in Dawn of War II that have been announced are:

1.Space Marines
2.Orks
3.Eldar

The 4th race will most likely be either Chaos or Tyranids. Tyranids is a more popular choice due to them not being in Dawn of War because Relic said it was not possible to do them justice with the game engine. Also the intro trailer that was released in E3 I think also suggests at Tyranids.

Who knows, it could be both Tyranids and Chaos too.

Also the colour of the Space Marines' armour depends on the Chapter (=Space Marine army) they're in.

Yes, I already knew all of this but it's nice to know that you're researching. The engine is going to be very similar, probably, but I'm thinking it's going to be tyranids. I'd love for them to bring back the chaos just as much as the next guy, but I don't think they will fit into the new conquering storyline as they're mostly rebels.
