Yesterday I was browsing around the Hive's forums, when I saw this guys sig, his user title said: Click my Signature. His sig looked relativly safe, so I clicked on it. Little did I know that it was a link to an internet prank, a big, ugly, bloody, face popped up; and a VERY loud screaming happened. It scared the **** out of me, and I fell out of my chair.

My speakers were almost at max, and the screaming was loud anyway. I don't know why, but my parents didn't here it; if they did, I would probably have been banned from my PC for a week (yes my parents are paranoid) So I was pretty lucky; other than the fact that I have to live with the terrible memory for the rest of my life.

I'm not angry at the user who did this to me, I just want to know if there should be a rule against these kind of links. Because who knows how many other victims will be next...

In the older chat, Lirch the chat-bot will post a link which shows a picture similar to your description each time Xarwin logged in to the chat. Just be more careful next time and see where will the link brings you to before clicking it.
And there's no rule against that. Seeing as its nowhere near illegal nor it is a porn, it's nobody's fault here.

Yeah, I understand, the link said 'game' in it, so I thought that it was a link to some type of game. And never again will I click on a link unless it takes me to a site I know. But is it still ok if people go around the Hive with sigs like that? And user titles that say click my signature? It was definatly the scariest and most unexpected thing that ever happened to me.

I HATE pranks like those, I would have freaked out 2 times harder than you. =O Just don't click on that guy's link again.

Even if I did click on his sig again, it wouldn't be as bad as the first time; my sound would be off, I would minimize the screen, and I would be ready. But Its not me that I'm concerned about, its all the other members that will feel the real shock. I mean, you can never really know what this kind of thing could do to somone, esspecialy to some of our younger users, or users with a medical condition. At that point its not just a practical joke, it becomes serious. And thats the whole purpose of this thread, I what to see what people think, should a rule be put in place to make THW safer? or do you think this is not important enough to change? or do you think its a funny joke and should be done more? or do you dislike it but you just don't want a rule? Feel free to give your opinions.

Oh, and thanks for the comment Darkzealot ;)

Ahaha. I hope something happens to prevent things like these. I'm easily scared / disturbed. :X

Thanks for your comment.

@Blindman, like I said, I'm not angry at you or anything; I just want to make people aware, and let them have their opinions about this issue.

@Zombie, so your point is??

My point is that people will try to spam you, scare you, troll you, altogether harm you in pretty much any possible way they can to their own personal amusement, doing so without suffering any material sanctions. Just because you turn your eye to one problem, that doesn't mean the rest will cease to exist.

Learn from it; don't click links with uncertain content.

Thanks for your comment. But does that mean everyone has to experiece it first before they can learn? What about the other people who don't know about this thread?

On the Hive, people who:
spam you, scare you, troll you, altogether harm you in pretty much any possible way they can to their own personal amusement

don't they usually get punnished? Like being banned or neg repped. I thought this was supposed to be a safe-ish site. But there can always be room for improvment right?

It is forbidden to scare people?

Maybe it should be, depends.

In some cases, It might just be a little more than just 'scaring people' And I don't know about you, but I don't really like big, ugly, bloody, faces that scream insanely loud; that pop up unexpectantly in my screen when i'm at the Hive :p

Actually, that's pretty much the best way to learn anything. See, you'll probably never click a sig link again, a day before you didn't even think such things could pose any harm.

While our staff is a model of excellence, they are made of humans as well, no matter how much attempts to hide that quality are conducted. Sadly enough, not only do they need time (and you pressing the report post button) to take action, they also need to counter new and new, admittedly innovative ways of trolling which may be offensive only to a certain group of people while others slip over it.

If you really have a problem, find means of addressing the staff directly, trial by forum is never beneficial and will most likely make you come out of it worse.

So, the warning about the scary shit/crap your signature contains is hidden due to size of the image it's linked to. Please, shrunken the image, get another one, and put the warning properly. My mother nearly got heart attack when she was next to me, and I was checking what's your signature. That can be dangerous. Just warn people about the content, please.

Sorry if I have been kinda aggresive. I just don't like when my mother cries.

Okay, so you knew what was behind the link, yet you showed your mom and kept the volume up anyway?

...why?

The ,,problem" is that I haven't knew what was beyond the link. And the luck roll is that my little sister wasn't next me as well. She would probably have nightmares.

Edit: ,,Fixed it". Unchecked the box showing signatures, in private options. I might miss something I would look after, but the whole site appears cleaner. Also, no more annoying over-stretched signatures. Yay!

It was entirely your choice to click it.

Did you, by any chance, hop into the cars of strangers when they offered candy, as a kid?

Yes, I can see this isn't getting anywhere; most people seem to think its not really a problem.

So a mod may close this.
