Overwriting the selection circle? And: Animated alpha on additive materials?

Hello again.
I noticed that the warcraft MPQ holds a couple of models used for the ingame selection circle.
I did a few experiments trying to change the texture of some of the models, but it failed to overwrite.
So, is there some way to replace the selection circle, or is it a part of the MPQ that cannot be overwritten?

Also, as a second question, i wonder if it is possible to make additive layers fade away in a similar way that blend layers do when you apply animated alpha.
I have noticed that other layers than those with blend filter are not affected by alpha anims.
