Right, I've been considering some of the themes.
Wonderland - Personally, I'm not fit to host, judge or compete in that theme, as I have no idea what it is. I mean, sure, it's a fairy tale kind of thing, but I've never seen any fairy tale films, and the closest I get to the visual design of such a theme, is the early Rayman games, and that's not going to be enough.
Grotesque - Well, as much as I like grotesque designs, it's very broad, and very hard to judge. It's everything from Goths, to Flesh Golems, to Zombies, to Ponies.
Pandas - There's only a few models that'll actually work as pandas, and that's the pandas..
Creeps - Very, very broad conversion theme, hard to compare entries. I think we'd have to pick one neutral race for this to actually work. And then people would whine at it being too narrow.
Wasteland - I like it, a lot, but it's also very broad and a bit hard to host as there's so much that can count as post-apocalyptic. Sure, we've got Mad Max as the primary holding point, but there's a lot of post-apocalyptic games, films and books. I bet not all of them fit the visual style of Mad Max.
Zombie - Could work, but, again, really vague. When are you just a bum, and when are you actually undying?
Colossal - We don't really have any fitting models to make colossal units for. This is more a model theme.
Seasonal/Environment - I really like these themes a lot, it's a bit hard to judge whether or not a design is "in season", easier to take the environment, but still a bit loose. How much clothes are in fact needed to withstand cold? Have a look at the summer-dressed ice trolls, for instance. It's just one of those themes that you think'll be great in theory, but when you try it out, you see how much bending of rules users around here do, and it all crumbles under too restrictive rules.
Custom Models - Pretty much straight on texturing without a theme. It couldn't become more vague, on the other hand, though, I think forcing people to skin custom models (that is, with a dedicated wrap, folks, I would not want to see submissions of ten different files for one model using in-game textures) is a good thing, because there's not a whole lot of that. Modellers, most of them, have (pardon me) really poor texturing skills, and a lot of the models in our database could be improved so much with a great texture.
So, yeah, I'm in favour of the Custom Models theme (yeah, I'm darn corrupt), but I'd like to hear a few more comments on it, and it would also be great to have some sort of listing of decent models with custom wrap (a link to the resource would be good). That way we won't get so many complaints from people not finding models to work on, nor will we have too many people using the same model. I'm not asking anyone to go ahead and search the whole database for models with custom wrap, though, so no whining, please. Feel free to list your own models if you're a modeller, I don't care how selfish you appear by doing so. We need models for this contest to be any fun.
Oh, also worth noting, is that it'll only be allowed to work on existing models - ie approved before the contest starts. This isn't the Modelling/Texturing Co-op Contest, nor am I giving Dio the joy of making a new model for this contest.
