MP3 File doesn't work

When I import an MP3 file, the sound editor displays it as 0:00:00 length, and when I try to play it the sound editors says it is 'not a valid sound file'. However, when I convert the file into a .wav using Audacity (which is 4 x the filesize, so this is not a viable option) and import it in .wav format, the sound editor plays it perfectly.

Any reasons why this is?

Might be that the mp3 header was corrupt and that Audacity actually managed to make a correct wav file from the previously corrupt mp3.

Try to make the working wav file to mp3, it's a long shot but might be worth it.
