Modelling Programs and Difficulty?

I know there have been a LOT of topics like this...but I don't know which is best for me, I'm looking at 3DS Max 6.0...and then I'm trying to find 3D Canvas, I don't have much experience in modelling, though, but I am most definetely willing to learn. I can afford either of them, though, so just tell me: In the long run, which would serve a newbie at modelling better? Specefically for games, and such.
