Manipulate and alter an icon into a particular look

What would you recommend to do the following:

I would like to alter this

Altering like make it look 100% dark-blue, like the backpack you can see in the right one.
How would you approach this issue, for any icon ? A simple recolor does not work, appearently.
 
Desaturate the original icon, and then apply a solid color layer above it with an appropriate blending mode.

Wow, I was not aware of the layer modes, they are awesome!

I desurated the base model, applied one solid color layer with the mode 'Hard Borders' ( I don't know the English term) and reduced the brightness of the desurated icon by 60%.

Not perfect, maybe a bit too dark.
I wonder how to create that printed look of the original icon. Maybe it looks so different due to the shape, as the orb is smooth-shaped and the backpack rough-shaped.
