Lightning Effects that are not Lightning Effects

Disclaimer: I don't know anything about model editing so I preemptively apologise for anything stupid I might say.

Okay, so I've been wondering this for a while now: is it's at all possible to have a model that 'stretches' to mimic a lightning effect? Maybe have points in the model that remain where they were created and when you move the model, it stretches?

"But," you protest, "Just use lightning effects!" Lightning effects, annoyingly enough, don't care about depth and will overlap everything, so lighting effects behind an object will still be visible.

So, is this possible or am I stark raving mad? Or both?

well changing scale/shape thru animations sound feasible but I was thinking some less hardcoded, like the example I gave in the OP. Dunno, would be nifty if that could be done.

Nope.

The only thing you could do is using ribbon emmiters, so it will leave a lightning like trail (i've got a projectile model with this trick) but it still won't remain where it was created. Just stick to lightnings and .SLKs. They are comforteable enough.
