Is Dota 1 dead?

Dota 1 will die off as Dota 2 implements more and more game mechanics and spell properties that can hardly be introduced on wc3 engine. And so will happen, as you have to trigger some things that used to be simple wc3 abilities, and even then you aren't sure it'll work properly.

The only reason I see for someone to play Dota 1 instead of Dota 2 is if the PC cannot handle Dota 2 or internet is too slow to download the huge file size in every patch/update.
