It's not being shamed it's a healthy use of friendly peer pressure. A fun way to get people all around the world involved in something. You're looking at it from the wrong perspective.
The fact that in America the ALS charity is the only national one I think which makes it easier for everyone to donate to it. Here in Britain we donate to whatever charity we like. It's a charity event not an ALS event which is what it was originally, so most diseases are getting donations from it, in Britain anyway.
Also, you've got to beat problems one at a time.
