How to create an item ability with splash damage.

I am using phoenix fire to make items in inventory auto-attack. Can I somehow give the attack splash damage without using a trigger?

... it is hard I know. Let me know if you think it is not possible. I tried to use the disease cloud ability with it but it didn't work. Any other suggestions?

Well, Any reason why you can't use triggers ?

I don't really know it.. maybe place a unit that have that explode ability. I think its a human bomb team or something.. make it invisible and make it spawn and die when a unit is hit.
