Hey there everyone, quick question.
I don't think I'll ever love this game as much as any other,
but before buying new CD keys, is the game pretty much *sniff* dead?
Is there still a lot of standard melee matches? Customs besides Dota?

The only place you'll find human people is on Garena, battle net is bot city.
Essentially unless you have friends - the game is pretty much dead for you.

Well, obviously, there are human players on BNet as well, the bots are not playing on their own, they merely host games 24/7. Which is useful.

Personally, I have not been online for a great many months, and I have no idea how many players are keeping up, but as WarCraft 3 never were the success of StarCraft, but rather a revolutionary step towards making modding easy, it never built that kind of loyal player base. WarCraft 3 as a game will actually wither over time and it has been doing so for a while now.

However, if melee WarCraft 3 is your thing, go ahead. There's bound to be someone like you who's pondering whether or not they should bother to reinstall the game. As for DotA - DOTA2 should be around the corner soon, and it will most likely defeat the purpose of playing DotA on BNet. Those who refuse to pay for a mod will probably "degenerate" to League of Legends or Heroes of Newerth.

I still love wc3, I remember the days when there were so many map-makers out there..
I belonged to the cinematic mapmakers in wc3, and there were plenty of good cinematic makers long ago (Zurg, Teal, rulerofiron666, Phoenix, Infrane, KingKlear, TheGreatNoob etc.)...there are also some good ones now, but not that numerous long ago.

Go to garena...there are plenty of games that aren't dota in there...altho' DotA is the majority, there are still a lot of games that aren't DotA out there (tree tag, footman wars, pimp my peon, slide, maze, vampirism, tower wars, tower defense, AoS, 3 corridors, defense, etc.)
I also tried creating games in garena that had hive maps on it...a lot of players enjoy the game..but they do not like a big download, probably the maximum size for their tolerance would be 3mb.

there's heaps of melee matches still on, the search time hasn't changed much as far as i've noticed over the last 3-ish years. and that's 4v4 which is always the longest.
as for bot matches, they're actually usually quite well populated, if you like the mainstream games at least. otherwise you need a clan/group of friends to play whatever you want to.
also, makemehost.com always has some games up or allows you to host your own ones.
wc3 isn't really dead, it's just nowhere near as variety rich and good as it once was

I read that the top player Infi is also now switching to SC2. I dont know how well he'll cope as the Koreans are on the top, but he says in China more of them move to Dota, either dota coaching or entering teams, fewer switch to SC2. So in terms of Dota, yes War3 is very active but it seems the war3 melee is dying even in China.

Enough populated for me. Since I can't host I've used awesome mmh bot to host some games. In half hour I get full house in 5 PM - 9 PM GMT+2 in Island Defense (yay ID!!). Yoshi Tag and Tom and Jerry are also little featured. Not to forget Jurassic Park!
I quit melee. Just got boring.

I think it is still really popular, lots of people still play Bnet and make maps, too.
But the proplem is that whenever i play 4v4 games, unfortunately, i mosty get noob allies, and out of 3 games 2 is losing because of them.
I hope that Warcraft will be popular for a few more years, but i think that soon other games will be better than W3.

Sometimes i restart the campaigns just for fun, they are really interesting. Blizzard did an awesmoe job.

Just the massive amount of hostbots is really frustrating. We work with hostbots that are only used by clanmembers. So games are actually hosted by admins. Those bots in the game list that only start when the game is full, they kill the game.
And for melee,.. hackers have killed that part of the game a long time ago.

I have been thinking of the same, for quite a long time now, about 4 years (not sure how long though).
And I was doing a bit of research, just for garena though.
According to that, number of players in garena (Europe rooms) is incredibly slowly growing. Even though that's sort of a good news, there are also bad spots:

1.) Like said in thread before, DotA is overwhelming it.
2.) There are quite few melee players.
3.) Even though there are more RPG players than Melee players, it's still low amount, but good enough to play.
4.) Bots.....started even in most common RPG rooms...

Well that was my research, it's not 100% reliable or correct, but it may say something about warcraft 3 these days :p

Rpg rooms at mid of the day are all full that means 7 RPg rooms * 255 players = 1785 players and there are 300 000 playing Warcraft III fully on Garena. also Europe dota rooms are full if you are a dota fan than you cant stop playing every sec there is a host.
I lost interest in melee maps so i choose between Dota and Rpg and my choice is RPG rooms. Sometimes there is melee map but i dont play it.

on a regular day there are about 250,000 to 300,000 people on just one garena Main server there are 4 or 5 of these main servers all with about the same number of people. i have played with people from all over the world and literally every country that exists. most of the people are from russia, china and the middle east and of course brazil. if you search for dota only on epic war it has close to a million downloads on every version its total downloads do not include those from the getdota cite which who if you would look at how many languages it has been translated to you will get a better understanding of what i mean on i sidenote i do not think that blizzard should not release a new game engine but rather patch the existing one however this is unlikely to happen since blizzard is profit oriented and they make their money from WoW mainly

In my country (Philippines) Almost everyone knows DotA. I saw some people playing other custom map. But I don't see any melee players. Melee is dead in Philippines.

You're dead wrong, I know a lot of guys who play melee here in philippines. But not that many. Mostly melee games are hosted on lan or tournament not on garena.

Unfortunately the Northrend Server is dying..
Most of the games are under the control of bots, even
DotA takes time to start up because of missing players..
Custom maps doesn't stand a chance, & it's only a matter of time before the last players will leave the game.. Melee maps are just barely being played..
But it's not like Blizzard is doing anything to keep the game alive.

Actually, unless the opponent prefers bnet, a lot of non-world cups are happening in Garena, so GGC is the place where many of the tournaments are held (ZOTAC, GoodGame.Ru, ESL Clanwar Ladder). Also there are still many melee games in the bigger channels e.g Europe, don't judge just by country-specific channels... Especially countries where melee isnt as popular as was/is in China.

Wc3 is filled with DotA everywhere, someone who likes DotA will still like Wc3 as well.
I dunno about battlenet, but on garena, there are still melee maps hosted. It's rooms are located in TFT game.
About custom maps, garena has few rooms for them, but it's more of custom spammed maps, than any or random custom map. Most of maps hosted there are like Troll and Elves, Legion/Green TD, WoW Arenas, Naruto Sh*ts, etc. You could host a map there from THW, but I can't guarantee people will join it. Or at least, you won't have full house. Although it all depends on the map's popularity, it's name, map size, and other stuff.

Yes. That's why when I make a map I make it small as possible. So the players will try it.

WarCraft 3 graphics really show their age even at max settings. However, the audio experience is quite high quality after all this time. The modding community is unrivaled but it, too, has hit a lot of limits, due to JASS being interpreted and the game running on a leaky engine. More complex endeavours like pathing algorithms and save/load systems cause bottlenecks and interface difficulties. The game engine is perpetually climbing in RAM and many leaks are unable to be dealt with - only preventative measures work which reduces game quality. Being unable to get certain key elements such as damage type, mouse positions, ability to change tooltips dynamically, abysmal attachment points and other shortcomings all contribute to a limited experience. WarCraft 3 will keep going, I've no doubt, but my interest in it is wavering.
