how can i enable a program to be run as administrator

i need to run it as administrator in order to be installed but that option is grayed out. how do i enable that option.

Are you logged on an account with administrator privledges? I remember Vista trying its best to fool you into using a normal user account all the time instead of an administrator one.

It should be somewhere in the Control Panel.

I have Windows 7 and I run as a Admin so I'm good, but I don't know a whole lot of Vista, because I never used it or even got hold of it. I went all the way from 95 to Windows 7 without even doing Vista.

Not all programs can be run as an administrator. I remember also comming across a couple of these with Windows 7 but I forget where.

If you are installing from a disc, try skipping the autostart and starting the installer from the discs file structure as an administrator.

Alternativly, install it to a folder that is not user write restricted if the problem is with write permission. Most non system volumes are this.

Have you tried running the autorun as an adiminstrator? Or does it not allow you to run any programs on the CD as an administrator?

i tried the installation program itself but there that option is grayed out. autorun would just run the installation program anyway. i have however set a non default folder as temp but the program still insists on using the default folder.

What are you trying to install? Have you tried installing in compatibility mode?

The installation option being greyed out usually occurs if the software thinks it is incompatible with your current OS.

compatibility mode didnt help. i tried windows 2000 compatibility mode which is a system that the game supports. games that are compatible with nt based systems generally work but that doesnt help if i dont find out how to install it.

UAC is off, if you will enable it then the run as admin will not be grayed out anymore. It's supposed to be some sort of security measure on Vista as I'm aware.

Anyway, try what Ironside said, I had that problem once too and it worked.

it could be a security in windows 7 because that have higher security but i am running vista. vista doesnt require that kind of thing to run programs as administrator.(i have run things as administrator before and it was off then as well.) it would also require a double reboot.(1 to turn it on and 2 to turn it back off.)

Edit: Well this question was asked lots of time after I searched google, and turning on UAC seemed to fix it for most.

Generally you run as admin when you're home user so when it doesn't want to do something it may not be that you're not running as Admin and if Run as Admin doesnt work then it is not it. Have you tried compatibility mode Vista or any previous version you used to make it work with? I did have an app that under Win 7 x64 crashed during install and when I ran as Vista mode which it worked, it worked fine for win7 as well.

i used the compatibility wizard and that solved parts of the problem. that game do however need to install itself to the system folder so since it couldnt do that it uninstalled itself again. i cant run something in vista compatibility mode when i am running vista.

If worst comes to worst you could try using a virtual machine to run an older OS inside your current OS to play the game. Ofcourse your processor needs to support virtualization and you need an older OS liscence.
