HeroRPG (Campaign)

Reviews
VGsatomi: Approved. Awarded Director's Choice at wc3search, this campaign models the final fantasy battle system almost flawlessly. One of those campaigns that needs to be seen to be believed. Gilles: This needs to be a directors cut again. No...
This is such a nice Campaign. Too bad it is too old to be played now. I tried 3 times to play it. First it crashed after I won a battle, tried to load and a message appeared „Waiting for Host...” with the button „Disconnect”, happened again this crash, and the last time, after playing a lot, doing a lot of things, suddenly the „Waiting for Host...” message appeared and all I could do was hit the „Disconnect” button. Tried to Load, and the message appeared again. Too bad. I was even recording. Wasted my time. Tho the Campaign really deserves 5/5 because of the plot and the way it is, but I will give it a 3/5 because it is not entirely playable.

First of all... I don't wanna OFF-TOPIC, but I really think I should tell you this. I'm not a moderator or something like that, but it's better if you know this.
You just did two bad things. First of all you double-posted, and 2nd, you answered to a reply that was written in 2011. I suggest you read the rules.
God, I'm feeling so good and SUPREME now that I said that! XD
No offense intended.

This is from 2007??? This is amazing! It has so much potential. Too bad it's cancelled.
The UI is appealing to me. Cinematics are well done. Fights are cool. Story is meh.
I like the exploration thing, the xp gain after a fight and the little chest that give money.
Though I find it strange why the paladin has no skills except flee and how tanky a little spider can be.
Other than that it's really great. I also wiped right now. The flee skill was resisted the first time I needed it. GG
I give it 4/5

Wait, so this is playable in the lastest wc3 version? I should definitely give this try if so. Never heard of this until now. If it used to be director's cut, it got to be good.

Yes it is playable! But be carefull when you go to the mountains north west. There are monsters who are really strong. You need to be atleast lvl5+
I tried it with lvl 3 and got 3 hittet and I only dealt 1 damage to the wolf.
I didn't save and load because deepstrasz said it would kill the game.

This map is incredible, but it feels anti-natural to me? It's weird, sadly I wasn't able to finish it, the wonky controls and lack of a map for orientation made it so that I got lost and couldn't progress.

This is basically a Final Fantasy-esque turn based RPG in Warcraft III's engine. Just finished this "demo" and I have to say I REALLY enjoyed this, and at the same time its HEARTBREAKING that this was abandoned. The "To Be Continued" text at the end was sad because I knew it wasn't going to be :(

Its insane how creative this campaign was for being released in 2007. The JRPG feels are on point! Here are my thoughts on the campaign:

Played on Version 1.27b

Bugs Encountered:

Nothing game breaking, but its worth noting I did have some issues:
- In the Darhall forest region, before you go to the Farmland to speak to Lothar, its supposed to prevent you from going North towards the Mountain Pass, but I bypassed it by walking over the trigger somehow and my character got stuck walking north and I couldn't control them anymore. It got fixed automatically after a fight triggered thankfully, but others playing: do keep that in mind.

- Somewhat frustrating, near the end, there was this weird "Waiting for Host" error that kept popping up after I went through each map transition and loaded the next map despite it being a single player game, which basically forced me to quit the map and reload a save. Thus, I saved frequently before each transition map-load. This got so bad in fact that after completing the map, when I wanted to check some extra things by loading back in, this prevented me from doing so because now it kept popping up after EACH transition and I couldn't see what I wanted to see. I recorded my playthrough and I will link it so that you can watch the exact thing that happens. I have no idea if this is due to the version I am playing, but it was frustrating.

- A tiny oversight: After talking to Lothar if you reenter his house you can see Lothar and Kelv's models used in the cutscene, which have not been removed.

Combat:
The combat in this was quite fun! Admittedly I haven't played any proper JRPG that this combat is clearly trying to replicate (I know, I know! heresy) but even without the knowledge I quite enjoyed the experience. I am aware of the "grindy" nature of JRPG encounters and while I can't say I am a big fan of that, I feel this campaign still kept things interesting.
Although I will say, I was missing the spells aspect of the combat and it did get a bit repetitive near the end. I even expected there to be spells from the spellcaster enemies so I targeted them first, only to find out they never use spells, neither do our two heroes. I think that would've kept things interesting. But yeah, it was probably planned in the final version.
Lastly regarding combat, sad to see there was no proper boss fight even once. Sure we had the miniboss fight but that too was quite easy I feel. but the item drop from that guy was goated! The Black Belt helped me up Kelv's damage a lot which made it so that I could tag-team enemies with Kelv + Hodric attacking them together in a round which would end up killing them, it was super satisfying!

One thing I do wish though is for a way to look at the enemy's healthbar. I had to calculate the damage I dealt to them to approximate how many hits I have to inflict, but it would have been nice!

Story:
Not much to say sadly in this department. What story is here in the demo is intriguing... but since it is never going to be finished, it just ends up being a setup for nothing sadly. We never got to know if Arlegy truly betrayed us or if it was indeed a setup to make us distrust each other!

Terrain/Map Layout + Exploration:
Honestly I loved the terrain in this map, especially the little details in the Castle and the Town, and then in the farmland! Wandering around town after exiting the castle with the music in the background gave me real Fable vibes. I wish there were side quests in the town too! I loved the fact that you can enter the buildings and its a seperate area designed for that specific interior. I liked it a lot.
The items on the ground gave incentive for exploring as well, albeit I really could've done with a tutorial on how to loot the chests for items xD I was stumbling around not knowing and I only came to know halfway through my playthrough and then had to go back to collect everything I missed. For those who want to know: Run up to them and let them get selected with the orange circle that comes up with a sound cue, and then press Escape to loot them. You have to do this to interact with ANYTHING in the game in fact.
The little puzzle at the end was neat, albeit pretty easy to figure out, although it was still satisfying regardless.
One thing I will criticize about the layout though is the fact that you have to go through two different map transitions to get to the button to understand if you got the sequence of switches right is VERY obnoxiously designed. I am NOT a fan of it, because it just wastes the player's time, not to mention you keep getting attacked on the way too. The best way to handle it would have been a shortcut on the other side to get you back to the switches super easily, but I digress. These suggestions are falling on deaf ears anyway XD since the project has been abandoned.
Overall though, loved the exploration!

That's about all the big things I wanted to talk about! Overall an excellent experience. I have some more small stuff section-wise I want to add which I will spoiler tag below if you care to read:

Prologue -
1. I really like the opening, it starts off rather ominous with Hodric escaping the rogues. Really well-done tutorial too.
2. Classic "you are meant to lose this fight" moment with that rogue lol. I do wish I knew that ahead of time though because sadly I used like 40% of my potions fighting this guy and then they were never refilled later on either... didn't have any mana potions for like a good starting 25% of the map lol.
3. I noticed you miss with your normal attack against the rogue but actually land your charge attack to do some good damage... I don't know if it is intended or what, but yeah interesting thing to notice. Although I am pretty sure his health is set to such a high value that you really can't take him down.
4. Lothar is a good man! Its funny how you see his name now but later on when you go to meet him he is just called "Old Man" lmao.

Darhall Castle -
1. Bro how did Hodric wake up so fast? I suspect some trickery going on, like Kelv even commented on the fact that he recovered so fast! If this hadn't been cancelled, I wonder if that would've been a plot thread XD
2. Man, looking back at the recording, the amount of chests I just left behind because I did not know the way to open it :( I really wish there was a proper tutorial. Btw, there IS a tutorial, but you need to press Escape to talk to a person that tells you you can press Escape to interact with stuff, basically making it redundant which is so funny lmao.
3. Again, I covered this before, but man the interiors of the castle look awesome! I love the music too.

Darhall Town -
1. I will reiterate, I LOVE the vibes of this town especially along with the music. The NPC chatter (that I missed at first) is quite nice as well.
2. You can buy a Rod in the shop which apparently gives you Cure, but it doesn't do anything? Sadly I wasted my money I guess. I also got a Broadsword but apparently only Kelv can use it and you get a Broadsword in the next area so I made the wrong choice there as well XD

Darhall Forest -
1. Back to this cursed place! Finally fighting some creeps rather than normal human enemies. Like I mentioned above, I first saw the Troll Priests popping up and immediately targetted them first thinking they might heal the others, but sadly they do no such thing, they just are melee Trolls.
2. The layout is quite open, I got a bit lost in this area a bit at the beginning lol
3. Do the enemies in this area scale up with you? It makes sense if they do because they get quite ridiculously damaging later on in the playthrough XD The troll priests were doing like 30 damage to me later when initially they were only doing less than 10. Its funny because these guys were doing more damage than some critters you fight in the Mountain region.

Farmland -
1. Like I mentioned, the cutscene models of Lothar (sorry, "Old Man" apparently lmao) and Kelv stay in the map after the cutscene ends so you can see yourself if you go back into his house lol. And there is an item in there btw so it WAS intended for us to back in, which is extra confusing to me that this oversight happened lol.
2. Man the inn key is so useful, it costs just as much as a mana potion and it heals both Kelv and Hodric and refills both their mana? Really good!

Mount Dibur -
1. I guess this is the "high level" area in this campaign because the Dire Wolves are quite nasty and they hit HARD!
2. I will reiterate though what I said before, I hate that I have to go through this whole region to get to the button that opens the gate after I switch on the correct switches, there is literally no reason to design it this way. Its just a pain in the ass.

Dibur Cavern -
1. Man the atmosphere in this place is quite cool. I love the switch puzzle. The hints on the obelisk are well laid out.
2. The miniboss found in this map was fun to fight and I especially loved their drop - the Black Belt! I was able to make Kelv quite strong with this item, before he did only like 14-20 damage and with this he did like 40+!
3. Man I really wanted to see the Guardian fight when you turn on the wrong switches and then stand on the button as it was alluded to, but the "Waiting for Host" bug that kept popping up even after multiple reloads stopped me from doing so sadly. I wonder if THATS the boss this campaign was missing lol. Maybe I can check that out someday...

Here are my recordings I posted on YouTube, it took me about 3 hours-ish to complete but that INCLUDED me backtracking to parts of the map after I learnt how to loot chests XD. So maybe if we get rid of that, this map is probably ~2.5 hours?

Part 1

Part 2

Overall I give this campaign 4/5 stars! IMO it deserves atleast a High Quality rating honestly, but I can see why it doesn't because its NOT completed! IDK if this map maker ever created another map like this, if they did I have to definitely check it out!
