Double/copy mesh models; why?

So, I've come to find some models like:

Bandit Lady

Do such models need to have doubled meshes/geosets for some animations? I don't think this model has any complex animations like say the Grunt's axe roll from hand to hand (which is actually an illusion).

I'm asking because if I want to edit such a model, I would need to know where to attach stuff to, which bones belonging to which mesh.
