So... Whats up with custom models... Everyone everywhere is like, oh thats impossible.

Custom icons, loading screens, map previews, unit sound sets, music, (probably texture overwriting), are all quite easy... why aren't models coming along? Its been 32 days..

Answer: 32 days

When did the first custom model hit warcraft 3? like 2004-2005?

Well making custom things is harder now then it use to be in Wc3 and there is also by my understanding no place to upload them well at least for the hive and I also no of know way to import a custom thing into Sc2 editor.

There's no point of importing models, as they would increase your mapsize with several MB and there's a limit of 10mb if I don't recall wrong.

So there's no point of importing models unless you want it to be extremely crappy, which never would be approved due to the high graphics in SC2.

Models range from 100KB to 1-2 MB roughly. That means while SC2 models are high quality, you can still make triangled heads, hands an muscles if you like and it will be around 100KB. But I wouldnt like seeing that.

Wasnt there an assets file of the map that can store as many MBs as you like, just needing the map to load it.

Actually custom models have been in the game since mid-beta. An .m3 exporter exists, and supports many features for SC2 including models, shaders and animation. The same author of the exporter has made importer/exporters for 3ds Max that support Warcraft 3 and WoW models as well.

SC2mapster.com is the new hub. I've been to quite a few SC2 modding sites, and many of the people from other sites now use it. Hive will forever be the War3 Database, but SC2mapster is where it's at for SC2.

AFAIK, Blizzard hasn't released an art tool kit for SC2 yet and no 3rd party has made an exporter that lets an artist save a model to the format SC2 uses, making it literally impossible to create custom models for SC2.

I might be wrong, if I just haven't noticed it happen somewhere.
