Dead staying

I am using a model that does not have a death time and it would seem that because of that sometimes when it dies it just stays there looking alive. I do not want any fancy explosions for it or to animate it going away just for it to disapear when dead. Is there a way to do this? (I have changed "death time" and it doesnt seem to do anything)

the unit is a mechanical ground unit.
