City of Terror II (v1.2j)

If you consider downloading this map and you have the current War3 patch, you may want to download my latest map Doom instead:

They have returned...

CoT2 is a fast-paced zombie map with a nice list of features.
It offers both survival and arena mode.
It's predecessor, City of Terror, already had jetpacks and lots of badass enemies, but now there's gonna be more.

I. Interface and Controls

Aim for the head!
In contrast to most other shooting/zombie maps, you have the ability to shoot manually in CoT2.
1.2h+ (new)
The new way to shoot:
- Use left-click (double click) and optionally hold down mouse button for continuous fire
- Stationary MGs: right click
- W and Q and -aa still work, but are not needed anymore

1.2e (TFT)
In detail, there are 4 ways to fire your guns:
- Right click enemies
- Press W (hold position) and right click anywhere
- Press Q and left click (like using an ability)
- Enable auto-attack (type -aa)

Another advantage is that you don't have to open an extra spell book for further commands (and you still have them all!).

commandcard.jpg

1st row:
Q Attack

S Stop
W Hold pos
E Toggle jetpack
2nd row:
A Throw nade

R Reload
T Sprint
V Nightvision
3rd row:
D,F,G Class-specific abilities

X Shockwave (Liquid-Crystal-Armor)
The jetpack can be controlled via arrow keys or the mouse.

II. The Classes

There are 4 classes currently which can be selected at the beginning:
- Medic: Heals wounds, infection and revives fallen comrades
- Engineer: Establishes barricades and transports stationary MGs
- Explosives Expert: Plants anti-person, anti-tank (vs. bosses) and remote controlled mines
- Operator: Can display the last dropoff point for ammo (or trace enemies in arena mode), call for airstrikes and has a motivation aura

III. Weapons and Ammo

Besides the classical chainsaw, there are lots of weapons dropping throughout the game and each has different types of ammunition you can load it with, like fragmentation ammo for the rocket launcher, chlorine gas for the flamethrower and burst ammo for the shotgun.

But not all weapons and types of ammo fit in every situation, since explosions also hurt teammates and you sometimes just need a better fire rate than that of the AWP.
To use a certain weapon or ammo type just click on the item.

Basic weapons
attachment.php
Chainsaw
What's more fun than killing zombies with a chainsaw?
Hell, I don't know!
attachment.php
USP
The USP is the lightest gun which allows you to move swiftly and escape from precarious situations.
attachment.php
m3
Good close-combat weapon.
attachment.php
MP7
The sub-machine-gun is an excellent choice for urban warfare.
attachment.php
AWP Sniper Rifle
The AWP can take out any enemy from really far away.
attachment.php
m249
The machine gun can take down whole armies of zombies within seconds, but it is very heavy and makes you an easy target for fast enemies.
attachment.php
Rocket Launcher
The Rocket Launcher has the highest damage.
Be careful not to kill yourself or your teammates!
attachment.php
Flame Thrower
Great for meele combat, burn baby!
Experimental weapons (only 1 drops in every game)
attachment.php
BFG
The BFG (big field gun aka big f***ing gun) deals massive amounts of area damage with a moderate fire rate.
attachment.php
Railgun
Fires bolts of pure energy, that penetrate any kind of material and ignite it instantly.
Cannot drop in Arena Mode.
attachment.php
Coil Gun C43
Creates a static field, causing lightning bolts to jump on nearby enemies.
Uses the same ammo as the Railgun.

Last but not least, there are stationary machine guns which can be packed and set up somewhere else by the engineer.
scrstatmg.jpg

They only cover a certain angle, so they should be set up wisely.

IV. Enemies

Zombies? Yea, but those are the least threat for you.
This map introduces the next generation of brain-eating enemies (correct me if I'm wrong) that will push forward wave after wave, barely allowing you to stop and take a breath.
You need skill and teamplay to survive on the long run, you will barely have a chance alone.

V. Survival vs. Arena

Survival Mode
Arena Mode

In Survival Mode, your have to make it through 12 waves, which requires teamplay and skill.
There are a few tasks which can help you survive.
I will point out only the scientist in the military area (south-east), the rest is for you to find on your own.
The scientist is hiding behind a pile of trash and flesh and tries not to get eaten while you get to do the dirty work for him:
You have to get some infected blood for him so he hopefully can develop an anti-virus and later escort him out of the contaminated area.
(Thanks frostloh for the idea)

In Arena Mode, you have to reach 15.000 credits to win the game.
Each Marine you kill will increase your credits, ending a killing streak will give you even more.
With credits, you can buy various items like nades, or zombie spawns and bosses, which will hunt the other marines on their own, making their lives miserable.
There are certain marked points where guns spawn all the time, so you never run out of ammo. There also is an exclusive new gun in Arena Mode, which you can't find in Survival Mode.

VI. Final Notes

This map is supposed to be even more challenging than CoT1, so please don't start complaining about the difficulty if you've played only once or twice.
There are 11 waves of blood thirsty enemies plus an end boss waiting for you, and 5 tasks (counting those of the scientist in the south-east as two).

If you can't move there are 2 possible reasons:
1) You pressed W to hold position and shoot with right clicks
2) The infection took over (lasts at least 5 seconds, occurs when infection level >= 75)

- A short intro/tutorial so you don't have to teach newbies about the controls
- Survival with 12 waves with challenging enemies, including 5 bosses and tasks
- Arena with very fast-paced gameplay
- Jetpacks
- Custom aiming and shooting system
- Lots of weapons and ammunition and weapon sounds
- Detailed spooky environment with background music and sounds
...

Player commands:

-aa Toggles automatic attacking.
-m Toggles background music.
-clock Locks the camera to your marine.
-c close/medium/far/[2000<x<3300] Set camera distance.
-class Change your class (Arena Mode only).

Admin commands: (The first active player is admin)
-nj No jetpack mode.
-hd Missles & explosions deal only half the damage to Marines (Arena Mode only).
-limit x Set credit limit for victory to x (Arena Mode only).

Happy fragging!

Comment: Very polished, has some neat features like a jetpack, with acceptable controls.
However nothing new, some of the abilities are also very familiar, like sprint/night vision and also the classes.
But it can be fun, it has very challenging difficulties.
The shooting is fun, there's no auto-attack, however the terrain lacks more modern tiles, textures, etc.
It still has the warcraft 3 medieval feeling to it, but atmospheric wise it's very dark and moody.

Suggestions:
*Add quests for objectives, tips, etc.

Yeah I guess some street tiles like in CoT1 would be nice.
I was also looking for power poles (and cables) but didn't find any, does anyone know a good model?

As for the classes, if anyone has fresh ideas feel free to post them :)
I also need a third skill for the engineer.

You don't really have time to read quests though..
I think a good solution would be displaying the text again when clicking on the scientist.

Fun map. I just can't resist anything with blood and zombies, and this is one of the best out there.

4/5, room for further improvement but still impressive!

My review:

(+) Good terrain, keep up the good work!
(+) Jetpack ability, which you will fly around the area at the cost of your mana
(-) You cannot damage enemies when you are on the roof of an building, even when I unpacked the Machinegun

More reviews coming when I test the City of Terror II again.

When you are standing at the border of the roof you can shoot down, otherwise not.
I thought it looked too odd when you could shoot through roofs..

€: I just noticed that this indeed doesn't work all the time.. I'll have a look at it.
On the other hand, this does prevent you from camping on the roof.. so why change it? :D

Horrible terrain. As far as I'm concerned, the only thing that got this map approval status has to be the list of features implemented. Congrats to the author.

Horrible terrain.
Are you talking about v1.1? (if not, try that version)
Why do you think it's horrible and what could I improve in your opinion?

any idea how get tank fix?
A random enemy can drop an item that fixes it (under very hard and extremely hard you need 2 or 3 items).
Due to the probability this should happen in nearly every game sooner or later.

€: There most certainly is a server split in this version, gonna fix it asap
€2: I think I found the bug, but I've got some more testing to do tomorrow

nice but locking.
Do you mean lagging?

That's something I wanna work on for the next version. done, let's see if it works out
(I actually don't have serious lags, but many people told me so already, mainly during the time the sentry bots are activated)

€: New version 1.1e uploaded! See changelog for details.

good game but its kinda dark that i can't see those flayers...
Then you should darken your room, adjust your monitor settings or turn night vision on ;-)
I also can't play with the sun shining through my window.

€: 1.1g uploaded.

Known bugs (fixed since 1.1j):
- AWP sometimes shoots multiple bullets at the same time
- Marines sometimes reload without being given the command

€: The next version will add additional controls:
- Shooting with a hotkey (probably A)
- Optional auto-attack
- Controlling jetpack with the mouse
€: 1.1i with the above controls uploaded
€: Presentation updated

This map is one of the top survival maps next to ZAF and AFTERLIFE...Very good but can i suggest a simple leader board that shows players classes,Kills, and health%...Also can players have shared vision so nobody loses each other or when to revive someone and if you can make more weapons because more weapons is always better :D...I host this time to time on lan and bnet most people always complain about being to dark even though theres night vison and ammo runs out fast but Overall its still a great map and still evolving...keep up the good work...

I'm glad you like it.
As for the board, that's a good idea, escpecially because people usually don't remember which player chose which class in the beginning.
I guess I should also make the marines look more different depending on their classes (just like the medic).
The darkness and fog are the things I like the most about this map though, so I won't change that ;-)
There are enough full-bright zombie maps lacking any atmosphere out there, those people should probably play those maps instead.

More guns.. yeah, maybe after I fixed everything.
But I'll add more MP7 ammo, since it's a lot of fun to use it and you don't get so much.

€: The multiboard will display class, name, kills and whether the player is alive
€: I found out what's causing some guns to shoot too many bullets/in the wrong angle sometimes. *testing new version*
€: 1.1j uploaded! All known bugs are fixed (except random reloads, those will be fixed in the next version), multiboard added, interface improved (see presentation); enjoy! :)

Thx venge.
In the next version (1.1k) the aiming system will be improved further:
- No tooltips will be visible when hovering the mouse over an enemy (this was just annoying)
- It will be easier to shoot enemies with right clicks (200 AoE)
- You will be able to shoot enemies with left clicks (selecting) this doesn't work so well
- (The reload bug will finally be removed... it was a small variable error >.>)
I guess it will be finished tomorrow.
€: Some more testing required.

Update Looks Great but i was thinking for an idea. What if you made this map into 1st person view or 3rd person view then the map will feel more realistic and the manual aiming system you already have will be more efficient and more useful and if you could enable a choice if players want to play with it or back to normal view.I seen great 3rd person maps with good aiming system like paintball and heavy combat 2.But just never seen it in survival maps like this and seems like a good idea.

I've thought about this already and concluded that the map is too fast for 1st person...
Depending on the camera's distance you wouldn't see enemies coming from behind (or teleporting/flying enemies) and thus would have a great disadvantage.

Maybe I'll try it or even make it optional but I don't think it will be so good. :/

I didn't know you thought of this already.Perhaps decrease enemies speed so wont be so fast gameplay making it unplayable. And for enemies behind maybe enable radar or another way of using triggers for alertness. The downfall for 1st person view is the aiming system.Such as maps like Sharpshooter failed for terrible controls for the aiming system but 3rd person view had more success for aiming controls where you can use the mouse to aim and shoot and use keyboard controls to move your player.I can tell you are very experience with triggering and just wonder if this can be possible.

But if you have to use arrow keys (everything else would be a pain in the ass) to move you can't hit other hotkeys quickly.
I just don't see it working out, sry ;-)
I guess w3 is just too limited to make a really enjoyable 1st person map.

On another topic: The above changes for 1.1k are made and tested, but I think I will additionally add a new class to this version:
The Elite Fighter.
He will have less move speed malus from heavy weapons and a better kevlar.
For spells he will have Hold Breath, which increases accuracy for a short period, and something else which you can find out by yourself soon ;-)
€: 1.1k uploaded!

1000 downloads!
Time for some news ;-)

I haven't found any bugs in this version so far so I can concentrate on implementing new game modes for the next version.

I was thinking about some kind of FFA arena, where you can use all guns and additionally summon different zombies to fight for you. How does that sound? :D
€:
Progress of Arena Mode/1.2b:
- The gun spawns and mode selection are already finished
- You get credits for killing other players, and for a certain amount of credits you can, besides items, purchase zombies, which will hunt your enemies automatically
- If you reach a certain amount of credits you win the game
- Added a new gun (which I guarantee you have never seen before! :D) exclusively for Arena Mode
- Multiboard for Arena Mode
- Various minor things

If there aren't any major bugs I can start on adding some new guns to the next version after 1.2b.
I was thinking about some kind of lightning gun, maybe a force gun (pushing units away) and a swap gun for Arena Mode.

1.2b/Arena Mode finished!

The feedback I received in online games wasn't so good, but I think that's mainly because newbies are overcharged by the shooting system and all (though you just have to click stuff >.>).
But maybe some of you who already played the survival mode still have fun with it, hell, I do :D

Well done i love the Arena mode and the ghoul cannon is so well done very unique. Also yes newbies always complain about the shooting system...But do you play online when your not updating the map? Wouldn't mind playing with the creator and have you thought about running a autohost bot for your map running 24/7 for more popularity

I found some minor bugs in Arena Mode (like the infection not going away after respawn).
But I probably won't upload another version until I made some of the planned new guns.

Has anyone got further suggestions?

€: I already made a railgun and lightning gun for the next version :)
€: New version will be released soon, after some more testing
€: Presentation updated (added list of guns)

€: 1.2c uploaded!

I dl'ed and tested the survival mode. It looks very promising zombie survival map. While the terrain isn't groundbreaking it is suitable for this kind of map. Jetpack is really cool although i got stuck sometimes when near cliffs. Also I liked the shooting system and amount of weapons. I'd say it is a good zombie survival map with a few minor flaws but no one is perfect :)
