...Why not just give 'donors' something 'better', and let everyone have chat colours.

If colours aren't "important" then everyone should be allowed to have them! If its a matter of 'fitting with scheme'....lets remove avatars! Some of them don't fit the site's scheme.

Because then we get even more chaos, and the purpose of this change is to make the chat appear less chaotic.

See above.

If its a matter of 'fitting with scheme'

I don't think that's the problem at hand, and your proposal is irrelevant. We're talking about the chat here, not the forums.

PS: Oh noez! Some customizations don't fit the site theme!

Please try to take this discussion seriously. Although I shouldn't bring this into the argument, your respected user award seems like something that implies a responsible and mature attitude, and thus you should be careful with the way you phrase your posts, because right now it sounds as if you're mocking other users' fairly reasonable proposals.

1. Ralle needs money, respect that fact or donate.
2. Colours were originally given to donators "only".
3. You shouldnt be given chat paid equivalent privilages when you do volunteer work on a forum.
3. Colours arnt important to me, but they obsessively are to most of you it seems.
4. Have trouble recognizing people? Use poots client.
5. It feels unfair people who paid first get colour while people who have been mods for a month or less and/or done bad behavior after their modship get chat privileges. People who are good mods actually dont mind not having colour, happy with no award or privilage or just happy with forum thanks.
6. Chat privileges has nothing to do with forum contribution, forum contribution should equal forum privileges.
7. Too many people had chat colour, even misbehaving ex-mods. The chat was made of rainbows.
8.Its Ralles site, Ralle can thankyou anyway he wants, as long as he thanks you you should be happy.
9.The site is expected to have changes like this, i think it was the decent thing to do. BUT, people should of been announced or noted on this instead of it done suddenly.
10. Having colour creates a form of bias, too many people relied on them and looked up to those who had them.

First of all: 17 posts....what do you know about this site again?

Second of all....seriously, 'less chaotic', good grief another retarded reason to add to the list of other 'beat around the bush' reasons I've been given already.

...Yes...it IS relevant, who the heck are you again?

Please try to take this discussion seriously.

Don't tell me what to do, I was here serving the 'lesser peons' back when elitist nobility was screwing them up the wall and getting away with it left and right!

Again, who are you? And second of all...I'm down right pissed at the total lack of any real reason for this total blunder of site policy!

Did Rao and Shados donate? I know they were among the first to get chat colours.

This.

I don't particularly agree with the rest of your points, but whatever.

Something better like what?

That's not the point.

EDIT: People need to stop giving the "lolnoob" excuse to Insincerity. At least he's making sense.

You disrespect people who don't agree with you. Don't do that again.

Guys, this decision is final.

I will work something up for old staffers, but not this.

But have you looked at the chat? It's like everyone has a color because lately, so many people have walked in and out of the staff.
You don't say. :p
Irrelevant. Especially given that his point was that you have very little ground to walk on when when questioning someone personally. You would have done well to not comment on the respected user award he held and his behavior. I would not be surprised when someone responds the way they did to you.

Normally I wouldn't comment on this, but perhaps the reason the severity of this problem is from my own lack of commenting on it.

You see, users have no power. They cannot ban you, or -rep, delete your posts, anything effective. The most they can do is downrate your resources, but fat lot of good that does with only one vote to cast. So, when one user tells another user to not do something, or to behave differently, or don't double post, it's no surprise that the user does not listen. However, if a moderator tells the user the same thing, the probability that they will listen and not ignore it, or even act in opposite to it, is significantly higher.

It's no surprise Elenai responded the way he did, though he shouldn't have, and it's no surprise the responses people made to his response, though they shouldn't have. Tracing things back to the first unjustified shouldn't have, it is Insincerity's attempt to moderate Elenai:

Users are not moderators. If you want to tell people how to behave, apply to be a moderator. Otherwise, your efforts to moderate could prove counterproductive.

Let me say it again:
Users are not moderators.

As for the topic, I have never liked the idea. As soon as people start donating for a specific reward, we've got issues. Namely, our hands are tied. Suppose we want to upgrade the chat, but the new chat doesn't have icons or colored names. Suppose we have to refactor a bunch or code to make it have them. Suppose we want to remove them. We can't do it, without some people wanting a refund. Or course, since it's a donation they can't turn in their receipt. This doesn't stop them from wanting it, though.

Money is only a limiting factor. Lots of people use it for enabling, but only because they are limited by money in the first place. I think the only reason for a donation should be because someone wants this site to continue being unlimited. Any other reason and we start getting limits.

Limits suck.
