Just a complaint about this forums user data base.
Most people are immature (nothing to do about it) however it is painfully annoying.
For example: I have been gone for about a month, but now back to mapmaking. I forgot some stuff, so after looking and finding nothing (the search function gives crap threads) I ask the question.
In most cases I don't get help, or get annoying replies telling me to use the search function even though my thread says I already searched.
Forums with a more professional style will have a more helpful user data base.
So I made some suggestions for the general improvement.
Instead of having a bunch of (potentially crappy) tutorials and some faq's the tutorial section should be changed to the guide section.
Every question that is asked on the forums with a proper answer will be then edited into a Q and A.
This will reduce the amount of questions about general things people should know, but also more advanced things. And other things most people don't know about.
The general layout could be the same as tutorials, ctr + f is a good option so just making a link to a thread that will only feature a Q and A is good.
Also the categories should stay, with a few new ones.
Gui, Jass, vJass, (2D Art) Textures, (3D Art) Models, General Mapping, Other
When there are multiple answers to a question, for example take the subject Professions, I made a tutorial for that.
You can do it multiple ways, you should show one or two ways to do it, and tell people there are different ways.
Why do this? Because the tutorial section is extremely lacking. And most questions either remain unanswered or are forgotten and will never be found back due to the search function being incompetent.
I realize that this requires a high amount of work. But not more then the tutorial section requires now. Besides, once this list is getting more and more complete the forums will be less crowded with spam, useless questions and noobs.
If somebody still asks a question you could just give a link to the guides, if however the answer is not there it would be a new entry.
Reason: I made several question the past days still without a proper mature answer telling me what to do. For example making multiple fade filters to make a slide show of pictures. (How can I do that?)
The guide should also include things that can't be done.
For example:
2D Art - Filters
Q - What size and format should a fade filter be to be used as a fade filter.
A - It should be 512-512 pixels and be in either .TGA (32bit) or .BLP
It can;t be an other format or size.
Not that hard to make this right?
But somebody should make the index, once the layout is done (admin). Users can post links to threads where there is a Q and a A that's not in the guides yet.
Then a mod checks if it's correct, and edits it to be the correct format.
At first it will be a big load, but like I said after a while the amount of work will be even less then it is now.
And most things are already done and just need a good edit to make it look nice and clean.
I had more suggestions, but let's see about this one first. As the big wall of text is already to big.
You can agree or disagree, but let me tell you it's for the own benefit of this site (help part of the forums). As currently it's immature, underdeveloped and a pain to get certain information. And most tutorials are just in a crappy format or hard to read.
