Just a complaint about this forums user data base.
Most people are immature (nothing to do about it) however it is painfully annoying.

For example: I have been gone for about a month, but now back to mapmaking. I forgot some stuff, so after looking and finding nothing (the search function gives crap threads) I ask the question.
In most cases I don't get help, or get annoying replies telling me to use the search function even though my thread says I already searched.

Forums with a more professional style will have a more helpful user data base.
So I made some suggestions for the general improvement.

-------------------------------------------------------------
Guides
Instead of having a bunch of (potentially crappy) tutorials and some faq's the tutorial section should be changed to the guide section.
Every question that is asked on the forums with a proper answer will be then edited into a Q and A.
This will reduce the amount of questions about general things people should know, but also more advanced things. And other things most people don't know about.
The general layout could be the same as tutorials, ctr + f is a good option so just making a link to a thread that will only feature a Q and A is good.
Also the categories should stay, with a few new ones.
Gui, Jass, vJass, (2D Art) Textures, (3D Art) Models, General Mapping, Other
When there are multiple answers to a question, for example take the subject Professions, I made a tutorial for that.
You can do it multiple ways, you should show one or two ways to do it, and tell people there are different ways.

Why do this? Because the tutorial section is extremely lacking. And most questions either remain unanswered or are forgotten and will never be found back due to the search function being incompetent.

I realize that this requires a high amount of work. But not more then the tutorial section requires now. Besides, once this list is getting more and more complete the forums will be less crowded with spam, useless questions and noobs.
If somebody still asks a question you could just give a link to the guides, if however the answer is not there it would be a new entry.

Reason: I made several question the past days still without a proper mature answer telling me what to do. For example making multiple fade filters to make a slide show of pictures. (How can I do that?)

The guide should also include things that can't be done.
For example:
2D Art - Filters
Q - What size and format should a fade filter be to be used as a fade filter.
A - It should be 512-512 pixels and be in either .TGA (32bit) or .BLP
It can;t be an other format or size.

Not that hard to make this right?
But somebody should make the index, once the layout is done (admin). Users can post links to threads where there is a Q and a A that's not in the guides yet.
Then a mod checks if it's correct, and edits it to be the correct format.
At first it will be a big load, but like I said after a while the amount of work will be even less then it is now.

And most things are already done and just need a good edit to make it look nice and clean.

-------------------------------------------------------------

I had more suggestions, but let's see about this one first. As the big wall of text is already to big.
You can agree or disagree, but let me tell you it's for the own benefit of this site (help part of the forums). As currently it's immature, underdeveloped and a pain to get certain information. And most tutorials are just in a crappy format or hard to read.

The point with my guide system is that every question asked will be added in the category it belongs. No more need for the horrible search engine.

And there are good tutorials yes, but sometimes they just look like crap, they should be edited with Q and A (And A part will just have the tutorial) and be added to the guide.

It'll help lots of people. I even offer myself to help creating those Q and A things for the guide. If it gets approved somehow. :p

You fail to understand my suggestion M4stah, read again.

(Hint: It's about making more tutorials but in a different format (as guides) with Q and A so that people can look there instead of spamming the forums with questions. As the FORUM search option is crap.)

@ Captain Griffen,
The answers still need to be checked by somebody, and if they are correct then they will go to become a guide.

Let's go and find some random posts.
Telling me to use a search function while I said I already tried is rather annoying.
That's not nice. Even if his questions are stupid. With some good guides... You won't see this anymore.

This would be an example of a good thread for an guide btw.
In this thread every question regarding the topic has been answered.
Fade Filters

Having guides would reduce the amount of crappy threads about either easy questions that guides could all cover.
Just take a look at these immature question.
This or this, and an other one.
And that's just from a small search.

That's all for now, it's not my site. But it would improve with the suggestions.
Like: Less immature threads about stupid question, less spam and above all. Less people having to tell the immature people to learn it themselves or to use search function.

I think you totally missed the point of this thread.
It was a response to most of the quotes in the thread...
I agree that search engine on this site is horrible

Anyway i think it should be ok to be able to make immature posts, it helps the noobies get better and everyone needs to start somewhere with the mapmaking.

The search feature may suck. But it is my experience that extremely new people don't even search. I will think about this though.

Please do think about it, it's something we all would benefit from.
It's true that most new people don't search, I don't blame them.
9 out of 10 times I searched I came up with threads that had nothing to do with my question let alone give me an answer.

Having guides can cover most questions, just use firefox + ctr f and then you can easily find what you are looking for. ^^
