As always, I must thank Maximal for his excellent work and patience when it comes to the client’s insane plans.
This pack clearly reflects the new centaur architecture from the WoW Dragonflight expansion. One can say many things about the quality of modern Blizzard’s writing, but the quality of the race’s culture design done by the talented employees of that company simply can't be denied.

The Khural, the centaurs’ main building, is an adaptation of the central building of Maruukai in the Ohn’ahran Plains. Of course, due to the cultural differences between the centaurs of Kalimdor and the Dragon Isles, all eagle motifs had to be removed, which somewhat impoverished the building’s overall look, but instead the building gained an impressive horn, calling the centaurs to war.

The massive ritual stones at the Ohnir Springs became the foundation for the altar. Again, eagle motifs had no place in Kalimdor, so the altar is dedicated to the Mother Goddess. Initially I wanted a more abstract fertility deity, similar to the one on the icon of the Ancient Figurine, but Maximal captured the image of Theradras so well that it would be a shame not to use his vision.

The Ancestral Shrine is also inspired by one of the many centaur buildings on the Dragon Isles. In the original, the entrance is decorated with a shield or sabercat pelt, but a caster building needed something less aggressive. Thus the horseshoe motif emerged - in many cultures a symbol of luck - and Maximal added drums that previously appeared in our Raincaller’s arsenal.

Harpies’ Eyrie, unlike the previous buildings, is the result of our brainstorming, since WoW describes harpy culture rather sparingly (though we’ll still have a chance to use assets from the Legion expansion). The main inspirations for this building were swallow nests and a slight nod to high arakkoa architecture. I sincerely consider Maximal’s idea of flying harpies to be genius and incredibly atmospheric.

With that said, have fun with this pack and stay tuned!

Wonderfully done again, Maximal. I know these are commissions but it's clear you're knocking it outta the park, and making your commissioneers quite happy... and the rest of us to boot. Buildings are rare enough, but for lesser-done factions like Centaurs/Harpies it's a real blessing. And of course, I do so love how you nail the Warcraft-y style (when your commissioners allow it 😅). Even though I'm probably not going to be able to make use of any of these, it's a fantastic addition to the database & I'm very glad Galendor was willing to share.

Recognizing that these are commissions & that I'm no artist, I'll say just a couple notes of constructive critique as I see it:
  • The 'horseshoe' of the caster barracks is super thematic & cool, but I'll admit I didn't see it until it was pointed out. Feels like it's a tiny bit too 'long' & bulbous at the ends; if the intention is to get that across, I might suggest making it more circular.
  • Any 3-tiered custom building is a good HQ, and this one checks the box. I do think though (as someone who has spent too long analyzing the OG town halls & how they 'advance' from tier to tier) that the 'development' is somewhat underwhelming. T1 > T2 basically just adds awnings & torches & spears, and T2 > T3 just adds the big (admittedly very cool & thematic) horn. Doesn't even noticeably change size, much less composition (like the Human & Orc HQs).

I love when a fellow faction designer puts this much thought into their requests. ^_^ I don't know anything about the Centaurs of the Dragonflight expansion but clearly you've done your research.

I think a more generic fertility deity might've worked slightly better (all the 'statues' among the OG Altars are extremely generic, only vaguely recognizable as their race, even), but the Theradras is quite good & as simplified as it could get.

Again, thanks for being willing to share this great pack.

Thank you for this wonderful feedback! I'd like to know what do you think about potential ideas for Tier 2 & 3 upgrades!
