Ok I am wondering what the possible attack type and damage types are as far as game mechanics are concerned.

I know in DotA, the following combinations have various effects:

AT-Spells + DT-Magic = ignores armor amount, reduced only by the "spell" factor in the armor type's gameplay constants (spell damage)

AT-Hero + DT-Magic = always does 100% (pure damage)

AT-Spells + DT-Normal = reduced by armor amount and reduced by the spell factor in the armor type's gameplay constants (mixed damage)

AT-Hero + DT-Normal = reduced by armor amount (physical damage)

I wonder specifically about the damage types, because there are many which suggest elemental spells were considered in War3's design. In SC2, it looks like this variable affects how the unit death animation looks when a special damage type kills a unit.

I want to know if it is possible to detect damage type. Also, are the elemental types all equivalent to "magic?" i.e.

Magic = Fire = Cold = Acid = Death etc.
